Waste management: Project Opportunities in Maharashtra

PROFILE:

Waste utilization, recycling and reuse plays a major role in limiting resource consumption and the environmental impact of waste. Recycling is an integral part of any waste management system as it represents a key utilization alternative to reuse and energy recovery (Waste-to-Energy). Which option is ultimately chosen depends on the quality, purity and the market situation. Hazardous waste management is a new concept for most of the Asian countries including India. The lack of technical and financial resources and the regulatory control for the management of hazardous wastes in the past had led to the unscientific disposal of hazardous wastes in India, which posed serious risks to human, animal and plant life.

RESOURCES:

There are 250 urban local bodies (ULBs) in Maharashtra which comprises 23 Municipal Corporations, 220 Municipal Councils, 3 Cantonment Boards and 4 Nagar Pachayats. Per capita MSW generation in various towns of the state ranges 100 to 600 gram per day.  For class I cities in Maharashtra, the waste generation rates are in the range of 14 to 63 kg per capita per day, which includes Mumbai having the highest range of 0.63 kg per capita per day (pcpd). The average waste generation rate for the state is estimated as 35 kg pcpd.  As per the projection, the waste quantities are estimated to increase from 6.18 million tons per year in the year 2004 to 8.05 million tons per year in 2011 and 11.77 million tons per year in 2021. In total over 21632.3 tons per day (TPD) of MSW is generated of which around 50% is generated in Mumbai (8500 TPD), Thane (680 TPD), Pune (1740 TPD) and Kalyan (1050 TPD). Compare to other Metropolitan cities in India, MSW generation is highest in Mumbai.  Available data indicates that Waste generated in Maharashtra contains about 55% of Non-biodegradable and 45% biodegradable components.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES

National policy on waste management is set out in the October 1998 policy statement on waste management - Changing our Ways. It outlines the Government's policy objectives in relation to waste management, and suggests some key issues and considerations that must be addressed to achieve these objectives. The policy is firmly grounded in an internationally recognised hierarchy of options, namely prevention, minimisation, reuse/recycling, and the environmentally sustainable disposal of waste which cannot be prevented or recovered.

Manufacturing Business of Latex Mattress (Talalay Process)

Latex mattresses are becoming more popular as a replacement for traditional spring or foam mattresses. A latex mattress is one made of the sap of the rubber tree, also known as "natural latex" or "Hevea milk." This material is then processed into either solid foam or a foam-air mixture. The resulting material is extremely durable and provides excellent body support. As with any type of mattress, there are advantages and disadvantages to using a latex mattress. Natural latex is classified into two types: Talalay and Dunlop. Talalay comes in a variety of firmness levels and is firmer and more bouncy than Dunlop types. The Talalay Method The Talalay process is a distinct method of producing latex mattresses that has grown in popularity in recent years due to the superior quality of the mattresses it produces. Vitaly Talalay invented the process in 1929, and it entails a multi-step process that begins with extracting the liquid latex from the rubber tree. After that, the liquid latex is poured into a mould and cured in a vacuum chamber before being frozen to stabilise the latex cell structure. After freezing, the latex is heated and flash-frozen again to create a more consistent product. Finally, the latex is washed and dried before quality control testing. The end result is an extremely comfortable mattress that is resilient, durable, and has an open cell structure that allows for better breathability. It also helps to reduce heat transfer, so the mattress remains cool even in hot weather. The Talalay process also helps keep dust mites and other allergens at bay, making it a popular choice for allergy sufferers. What Are the Advantages of Starting a Latex Mattress (Talalay Process) Business? The benefit of starting a latex mattress business is that you can make a lot of money because the product has a low overhead cost. Latex mattresses have lower labour and material costs than other types of mattresses, making them more affordable. This allows you to maximise your profit margins while also providing customers with competitive prices for the same quality product. Customers also appreciate the fact that latex mattresses are chemical-free and eco-friendly. Customers will appreciate the fact that you are offering them a product that helps them reduce their carbon footprint. The Talalay process also results in a softer mattress, which provides greater comfort and support. Latex mattresses are frequently perceived as luxurious, making them easier to market and sell.
