What is a ginger oil project report?

A ginger oil project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that steam-distils dry ginger to recover its essential oil. It sets out the process, stills and boiler, dry ginger buying, market, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a bank needs before it funds the plant.

Entrepreneurs and spice processors use it to size the distillery and apply for a term loan; lenders use it to judge whether oil sales can repay the loan.

Also known as: ginger oil business plan, project report on ginger oil, ginger oil extraction plant report, ginger essential oil DPR.

What a bank checks in a ginger oil project report

A ginger oil unit lives or dies on two numbers: what it pays for dry ginger and how much oil it gets back. Lenders look for these values in the report, shown here as used in our sample.

49.5%Raw material share of sales

Dry ginger prices move with each crop. A bank compares this share with current mandi rates and the yield you assume.

88%Dry ginger share of raw material cost

Steam, water and filter aids make up the rest. A 10% rise in ginger price hits profit harder than any other cost.

45 daysDry ginger stock held

Ginger is bought in the arrival season and stored. The working capital limit must fund this stock, not just the debtors.

1.59Average DSCR

DSCR, the debt service coverage ratio, shows how many times cash profit covers loan payments. The lowest year in the sample is 1.39.

Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your capacity, ginger source and buyers.

Ginger oil manufacturing process by steam distillation

Dried ginger rhizomes give about 1.5% to 3% oil, so a plant handles about 33 to 67 kg of dry ginger for every kg of oil it sells. Every step below is aimed at getting that yield without spoiling the aroma.

  1. Cleaning and sorting

Dry ginger is sieved to remove dust, stones and mouldy pieces, which would add off-notes to the oil.

  2. Coarse grinding

The rhizomes are ground to a coarse powder; too fine a powder packs down and blocks the steam.

  3. Steam distillation

Steam from the boiler passes through the charged still for several hours and carries the oil vapour out.

  4. Condensing and separation

The vapour is cooled in a condenser and the lighter oil is drawn off the water in a Florentine-type separator.

  5. Drying and filtering

Traces of water are removed with anhydrous sodium sulphate and the oil is filtered clear.

  6. Testing and packing

Each batch is checked for aroma and physical constants and packed in aluminium or HDPE containers away from light.

Dry ginger and other raw materials

Whole, unpeeled dry ginger gives the best oil, and Indian distillers often redistil to recover more of it. The spent powder left after distillation is about half starch and can be sold as cattle feed or for solvent extraction, which offsets part of the ginger cost.

Machinery for a ginger oil extraction plant

The stills and the boiler together take 60% of the machinery budget in our sample. Stainless steel contact parts are the norm, because iron darkens the oil.

Who buys ginger oil in India

Ginger oil is sold for its warm, spicy and slightly lemony aroma. Its main constituent is zingiberene, and buyers check this profile against their own reference sample before they approve a supplier.

Karnataka and Kerala are the largest ginger producing states in the Spices Board's 2024-25 estimates, so a unit near these belts pays less freight on its raw material.

  • Flavour and fragrance houses
  • Soft drink, ginger ale and confectionery makers
  • Ayurvedic and herbal medicine makers
  • Aromatherapy, soap and personal care brands
  • Essential oil traders and exporters

Where a new unit wins: consistency. A buyer who blends ginger oil into a beverage flavour needs every drum to smell the same. A unit that buys from one ginger belt and tests every batch can keep accounts that cheaper, variable oil loses.

Licences and standards for a ginger oil unit

Business registrationUdyam (MSME) registration and GST registration
Pollution board consentConsent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board; boiler fuel and spent ginger disposal are the points it checks
BoilerRegistration and periodic inspection of the steam boiler by the state boiler inspectorate
Food safetyFSSAI licence when the oil is sold as a food flavouring; the product is chosen from the categories on the FoSCoS portal
ExportSpices Board registration as exporter of spices (CRES); manufacturer status is issued after an inspection of the unit
Quality standardISO 16928:2014 sets the characteristics of ginger essential oil, including oil from India; IS 7826:2026 applies if you add oleoresin

Loans and schemes for a ginger oil project

PMEGP

Manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh

Margin-money subsidy of 15–35% for a new unit. Fits a small single-still distillery.

Mudra

Loans up to ₹20 lakh (Tarun Plus)

The ₹20 lakh tier is for borrowers who have repaid an earlier Tarun loan. Useful for a lab or a second still.

MSME term loan with CGTMSE

Guarantee cover up to ₹10 crore

The usual route for a unit the size of our sample, where collateral-free cover helps.

Scheme limits change. Confirm current terms with the bank or the scheme portal before applying.

Mistakes that weaken a ginger oil project report

  • Pricing oil at retail bottle rates

Aromatherapy bottles sell per 10 ml. Bulk buyers pay per kg in drums, so sales and DSCR must use bulk ex-factory prices.

  • Using the top of the yield range

Yield falls with old, peeled or mouldy ginger. Base the report on a test distillation of the grade you will actually buy.

  • Funding debtors but not ginger stock

Buying in the arrival season ties up cash for weeks. Leave stock out and the cash credit limit runs short in Year 1.

  • No plan for spent ginger

Each kg of oil leaves dozens of kg of wet powder. Without a buyer or a drying yard, it becomes a disposal cost and a pollution issue.

Ginger Oil project report: frequently asked questions

What is the cost of a ginger oil manufacturing plant in India?

Our sample report models a 39 kg per day unit at ₹303.66 lakh, with ₹160 lakh in plant and machinery. A smaller batch distillery with one or two stills can start at roughly ₹60–120 lakh, an indicative range. The real figure depends on capacity, boiler fuel, land and how much dry ginger stock you must fund.

How much oil do you get from 1 kg of dry ginger?

Dried ginger rhizomes give about 1.5% to 3% essential oil by steam distillation, so 1 kg of dry ginger yields roughly 15 to 30 grams of oil. Whole, unpeeled ginger gives the best oil, and Indian distillers often redistil to recover more. Your report should use a yield tested on the ginger grade you will buy.

What is the difference between ginger oil and ginger oleoresin?

Ginger oil is the volatile part recovered by steam distillation and carries the aroma. Oleoresin is made by solvent extraction and also holds the pungent gingerols, so it tastes hot. Many units start with oil and later add an oleoresin line, which needs a solvent plant and a separate standard, IS 7826.

Is ginger oil manufacturing profitable?

In our illustrative sample, a 39 kg per day unit earns a 17% return on investment in Year 3, breaks even at 43% of capacity and pays back in about 4.1 years. Real profit depends mostly on the price you pay for dry ginger, the yield you achieve and the price buyers pay for your aroma grade.

Which licences are needed to start a ginger oil unit?

You need Udyam and GST registration, pollution board consent, and a factory licence where the workforce threshold applies. An FSSAI licence is needed when you sell the oil as a food flavouring, and the Spices Board issues the export registration (CRES) for spice products. A steam boiler also needs registration with the state boiler inspectorate.

Can I get a PMEGP loan for a ginger oil unit?

Yes, if the project fits the scheme. PMEGP covers manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh with a margin-money subsidy of 15% to 35%, which suits a small batch still. A unit the size of our sample, at ₹303.66 lakh, would usually take an MSME term loan, often with CGTMSE guarantee cover.

Is the sample ginger oil project report PDF free, and can I use it for a loan?

The sample is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report; its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and loan scheme.
