What is a essential oil project report?
An essential oil project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that steam-distils aromatic herbs such as lemongrass, citronella, palmarosa and mint into essential oil. It sets out herb sourcing, distillation equipment, oil recovery, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even for a bank or subsidy office.
Farmer groups, FPOs and first-time entrepreneurs use it to plan a unit and apply for a loan. Lenders use it to judge whether oil sales can repay.
Also known as: essential oil distillation project report, essential oil business plan, project report on essential oil, aromatic oil extraction DPR, essential oil extraction plant report.
What a bank checks in an essential oil project report
Credit officers look past the total cost to a few numbers that show whether oil sales can carry the loan. These are the values in our sample report and why each one gets questioned.
Fresh herb is bought by the tonne for a few kilograms of oil, so this ratio decides profit. Banks ask how the herb price was fixed and from whom.
The sample averages four oils. Prices for lemongrass and citronella oil swing with each season, so the report should test a lower price.
Debt service coverage ratio is cash available for loan repayment divided by the instalments due. The sample averages 1.46; a lender wants headroom above 1.
Fragrance houses and traders test each lot before they pay. Trade receivables are the largest current asset in the sample's working capital.
Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your crops, buyers and location.
How much does an essential oil distillation unit cost?
Cost depends mainly on how many tonnes of herb you can distil a day and whether you own land and a boiler. The large tier is the unit in our sample report; the others are indicative ranges.

Essential oil manufacturing process by steam distillation
Most Indian aromatic grass and mint oils are made by steam distillation. Solvent extraction and cold pressing are used for flowers and citrus peel, and need different plant.
- Harvest and wilting
Lemongrass is cut every 60–70 days and wilted in shade for about a day. This removes roughly 30% of its moisture, so more herb fits in each still.
- Chopping and charging
A chaff cutter chops the herb, which is packed evenly into the still basket so that steam cannot find an easy channel through it.
- Steam distillation
Boiler steam rises through the charge and carries the oil out; lemongrass needs about four hours for full recovery.
- Condensation
Shell and tube condensers, fed from a cooling tower, turn the oil and steam vapour back into liquid.
- Oil separation
In a Florentine separator the lighter oil floats on the water and is drawn off; the water goes back to the still so dissolved oil is not lost.
- Drying and filtration
Anhydrous sodium sulphate takes out traces of water, and the oil is filtered clear so it does not turn hazy or rancid in storage.
- Testing and packing
Each lot is checked by gas chromatography for citral, geraniol or menthol and packed in aluminium or HDPE drums.
Herbs and raw materials for essential oil
Fresh herb is almost the whole raw material bill, and it yields very little oil. The National Horticulture Board puts lemongrass recovery at 0.5–0.8% of fresh herb, so 1 tonne of herb gives only 5–8 kg of oil. Units that tie up herb from farms within a short haul avoid oil loss from herb that dries or heats in transit.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Lemongrass herb | 40% | 88.03 |
| Java citronella herb | 30% | 66.02 |
| Palmarosa herb | 15% | 33.01 |
| Mentha arvensis (mint) herb | 10% | 22.01 |
| Anhydrous sodium sulphate and filter aids | 5% | 11.01 |
| Total | 100% | 220.08 |
Machinery for an essential oil distillation unit
Stainless steel stills are the largest item in the sample. Mild steel stills cost less, but they rust and can discolour the oil.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel stills with lifting baskets | Hold the herb charge for distillation | 40.55 |
| Fuel-fired steam boiler | Raises steam for the stills | 24.33 |
| Shell and tube condensers | Cool the vapour back to liquid | 16.22 |
| Chaff cutter and loading hoist | Chop herb and lift baskets in and out | 13.52 |
| Quality control lab with gas chromatograph | Measures constituents for each lot | 10.81 |
| Cooling tower and water circulation | Recycles condenser water | 9.46 |
| Florentine oil separators | Separate oil from distillate water | 8.11 |
| Oil drying and filtration unit | Removes moisture and particles | 6.76 |
| Oil storage tanks and drums | Store oil away from light and heat | 5.41 |
| Total plant and machinery | 135.17 | |

Who buys essential oil from Indian distillers?
Most oil from a distillation unit is sold in drums to industry, not in small bottles. Buyers pay on constituent content, so citral in lemongrass oil, geraniol in palmarosa and citronella, and menthol in mint oil decide the price you get.
- Fragrance and flavour houses
- Soap, detergent and toiletry makers
- Mosquito repellent and agarbatti makers
- Aroma chemical makers that isolate citral or geraniol
- Aromatherapy and personal-care brands
- Essential oil traders and exporters
Where a new unit wins: close ties with growers. A unit that supplies planting material and buys herb at an agreed rate keeps its stills full. A unit buying on the open market runs short in dry months.
Licences, standards and GST for an essential oil unit
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) registration and GST registration |
|---|---|
| Boiler | A steam boiler of 25 litres or more must be registered before use under the Boilers Act, 2025, in force from 1 May 2025 |
| Pollution board consent | Consent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board; essential oil distillation is not named in every state's category list, so confirm the category with the board |
| Oil specifications | BIS standards set quality for each oil: IS 327 (lemongrass), IS 512 (Java citronella), IS 526 (palmarosa) and IS 528 (Mentha arvensis) |
| Test methods | IS 326 series covers sampling and tests such as relative density, optical rotation and gas chromatography |
| GST rate | Heading 3301: 18% for essential oils; 5% for natural menthol goods such as peppermint and spearmint oil (as of October 2026) |
Standards and tax rates change. Confirm the current rate and standard edition before you price or sign a supply contract.
Mistakes that weaken an essential oil project report
- Assuming a high oil recovery
Using 1% or more for lemongrass when field recovery is often 0.5–0.8% inflates output and revenue in every year.
- Pricing oil at retail bottle rates
Drum buyers pay a fraction of the per-ml price on aromatherapy shelves. Projections built on retail prices fail a bank's first check.
- Running the stills 300 days on one crop
A single crop gives herb only in harvest flushes. Without a second or third crop, or a contract farm plan, capacity use falls short.
- Leaving out the boiler and its approvals
Fuel, water treatment, boiler registration and inspection costs are often missed, which under-states running cost and delays start-up.
- No laboratory or lot testing
Without GC reports buyers discount the oil or reject lots, and the report cannot show a credible selling price.

Essential Oil project report: frequently asked questions
What is the essential oil manufacturing plant cost in India?
A small field distillation unit with one or two stills needs roughly ₹15–50 lakh, and a mid-size unit of 50–100 kg oil per day about ₹80–180 lakh. Our sample report models a 140 kg per day unit at ₹263.58 lakh, including land, building and working capital margin. These are indicative ranges; your own report works out the cost for your crops and site.
Which herbs are used to make essential oil in India?
Units that distil aromatic grasses and mint mostly process lemongrass, Java citronella, palmarosa and Mentha arvensis. Running several crops through the same stills keeps the plant working through more of the year. In our sample report lemongrass is 40% of raw material cost, citronella 30%, palmarosa 15% and mint 10%.
How much oil does lemongrass give on distillation?
The National Horticulture Board model gives a distillation recovery of 0.5–0.8% of fresh herb. Average oil yield is about 80 kg per hectare a year, and improved irrigated varieties give 100–150 kg. Citral, the main constituent buyers pay for, makes up 75–85% of good lemongrass oil.
Which machines are needed for essential oil extraction?
A steam distillation unit needs stainless steel stills with lifting baskets, a steam boiler, shell and tube condensers and Florentine separators. Add a cooling tower, a chaff cutter and hoist, an oil drying and filtration unit, storage drums and a laboratory. In our sample the stills are the largest item at ₹40.55 lakh.
Is essential oil manufacturing profitable?
It can be, but margins depend on herb cost and oil recovery. In our illustrative sample a 140 kg per day unit earns ₹38.98 lakh net profit on ₹414.54 lakh sales in Year 3. Return on investment is 15% and break-even is at 44% of capacity. A dry season or a fall in oil prices hits profit quickly.
Can I get a PMEGP or Mudra loan for an essential oil unit?
PMEGP covers manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh with a margin-money subsidy of 15–35%, which suits a small field distillation unit. Mudra loans go up to ₹20 lakh under Tarun Plus for borrowers who repaid an earlier Tarun loan. Larger units usually take an MSME term loan, often with CGTMSE guarantee cover.
Is the essential oil project report PDF free, and can I use it for a loan?
The sample PDF is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own crops, capacity, location and loan scheme.
