What is a menthol crystal project report?
A menthol crystal project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that separates natural menthol from crude mentha oil by chilling and crystallisation. It sets out the process, machinery, oil buying, market, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a bank needs before it funds the plant.
Mint oil traders, distillers and first-time entrepreneurs use it to size a crystal unit and apply for a term loan; lenders use it to judge whether the unit can repay.
Also known as: menthol crystal business plan, project report on menthol crystal, menthol crystal manufacturing project report, DPR for menthol crystal plant, menthol flakes from mentha oil project report.
What a bank checks in a menthol crystal project report
A menthol unit is a trading margin wrapped in a small factory. Credit officers look first at the oil cost, the cash tied up in stock and whether the spread can carry the loan. These are the values in our sample report.
The sample counts crude mentha oil net of the DMO it sells back. A report that shows a much lower share is likely ignoring real oil prices or overstating yield.
Oil stock and buyer credit lock up more cash than the machinery costs. Banks check that the cash credit limit and promoter margin cover it.
Debt service coverage ratio: cash available for each rupee of loan repayment. The weakest year in the sample is 1.35, in Year 2, when principal repayment steps up.
High for a light plant, because the margin per kg is small. Lenders test how a fall in crystal price moves this figure.
Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses oil prices, yields and buyers for your location.
How much does a menthol crystal plant cost in India?
Cost depends on daily output and on whether you fractionate the oil before freezing it. The Uttar Pradesh government's model report puts a 30 kg per day freeze-and-centrifuge unit at ₹36.56 lakh. The third tier is the unit in our sample report.

Menthol crystal manufacturing process
Natural menthol is not made by reaction. It is separated from crude mentha oil, which comes from the Mentha arvensis plant, by cooling the oil until menthol crystallises out. Small units skip fractionation and freeze the dried oil directly, at the cost of lower recovery.
- Oil testing and buying
Each lot is checked by gas chromatography for menthol content and moisture before the price is agreed, because both decide how many crystals it will give.
- Drying and filtration
Anhydrous sodium sulphate takes out water, and filtration removes plant residue. Wet or dirty oil will not crystallise cleanly.
- Vacuum fractionation
Distilling under vacuum keeps the temperature low and separates a menthol-rich cut from the lighter fractions.
- Chilled crystallisation
The cut is cooled slowly in jacketed stainless tanks with chilled brine. Slow cooling over several days grows the large, bold crystals buyers pay more for.
- Draining and centrifuging
The remaining liquid drains off as dementholised oil (DMO), a saleable by-product, and a basket centrifuge spins the crystals dry.
- Drying and sieving
Crystals are dried well below their 42–44°C melting range, then sieved into bold crystals and flakes.
- Testing and packing
Each batch is tested for melting range and purity and packed in airtight lined drums or boxes, since menthol slowly evaporates and picks up odours.
Mentha oil and other raw materials
Crude mentha oil is almost the whole input. Most of it is bought from farmers and traders in the mint belt of Uttar Pradesh after the harvest, so price and quality vary from lot to lot. The sample nets the value of DMO sold back against the oil bill.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Crude mentha oil, net of DMO resale | 95% | 331.07 |
| Anhydrous sodium sulphate for drying oil | 2% | 6.97 |
| Filter aids and process consumables | 3% | 10.45 |
| Total | 100% | 348.49 |
Why oil buying decides profit: at a raw material share of 62.2% of sales, a 5% swing in oil price moves cost by about ₹17 lakh a year at Year 3 volumes. That is more than half the sample's net profit.
Machinery for a menthol crystal unit
The plant is mostly stainless steel vessels plus refrigeration. In the sample the vacuum distillation column is the costliest item, followed by the brine chilling plant.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Vacuum fractional distillation column | Separates a menthol-rich cut | 18.06 |
| Brine chilling plant | Supplies cold brine to the tanks | 16.42 |
| Jacketed SS crystallisation tanks | Hold the oil while crystals grow | 14.77 |
| SS basket centrifuge | Spins DMO out of the crystals | 8.21 |
| SS crude oil storage tanks | Store bought-in oil by lot | 6.57 |
| Low-temperature tray dryer | Dries crystals without melting them | 4.93 |
| Gas chromatograph | Tests oil lots and finished crystals | 4.92 |
| Oil filtration and drying unit | Removes water and residue | 4.10 |
| Vibro sifter and packing scale | Grades and weighs crystals | 4.10 |
| Total plant and machinery | 82.08 | |

Who buys menthol crystals?
Natural menthol gives the cooling effect in balms, cough drops, toothpaste and many personal-care products, so buyers are spread across pharma, FMCG and flavour trades. Bulk buyers usually test every lot and pay on credit, which is why the sample allows 45 days of receivables.
- Pain balm and cold-rub makers
- Pharmaceutical and Ayurvedic companies
- Toothpaste and mouthwash manufacturers
- Confectionery and cough-drop makers
- Flavour and fragrance houses
- Menthol traders and exporters
Where a new unit competes: synthetic menthol competes with natural menthol on price. A unit near the mint-growing districts wins on fresh oil, steady crystal size and quick delivery, not on price alone.
Licences, standard and GST for a menthol crystal unit
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) registration and GST registration |
|---|---|
| GST rate | 5% on natural menthol and menthol crystals from natural menthol (tariff item 2906 11 10) from 22 September 2025; 18% where made from other than natural menthol |
| Reverse charge | Mentha oil and Mentha arvensis bought from an unregistered supplier fall under reverse charge, so the registered buyer pays the GST |
| Product standard | IS 3134 : 2025 for natural menthol: melting range 42–44°C and at least 99.0% natural menthol by gas chromatography |
| Pollution board consent | Consent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board; confirm the category with the board for your district |
| Factory licence and fire NOC | Factory registration where worker thresholds apply, and a fire NOC for oil storage; rules vary by state |

Mistakes that weaken a menthol crystal project report
- Assuming all the menthol comes out as crystals
A good part stays in the DMO. Revenue built on full recovery makes the unit look far more profitable than it is.
- Leaving out DMO sales
The opposite error. DMO has buyers, and ignoring it understates income and can make a sound project look unviable.
- Sizing working capital for steady buying
Oil arrives in a few months after the harvest. A unit that stocks for the year needs a far bigger cash credit limit than one buying monthly.
- No budget for oil testing
Without gas chromatography, a low-menthol or adulterated lot cuts yield and is only found after it is paid for.
- Wrong GST treatment
Natural and non-natural menthol now carry different rates, and farm oil purchases attract reverse charge. Errors here distort cash flow.

Menthol Crystal project report: frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to start a menthol crystal plant in India?
A small freeze-only unit making 25–60 kg a day needs roughly ₹35–70 lakh, and a mid-size unit of 100–150 kg a day about ₹90–140 lakh. Our sample report models a 230 kg per day unit at ₹171.85 lakh. These ranges are indicative. Working capital for oil stock is often the biggest variable, so your report should size it for your buying pattern.
How are menthol crystals made from mentha oil?
Crude mentha oil is tested, dried and filtered, and usually fractionated under vacuum to give a menthol-rich cut. That cut is cooled slowly with chilled brine until crystals grow. The liquid left behind is drained off as dementholised oil (DMO), and the crystals are centrifuged, dried at low temperature, sieved and packed.
Is the menthol crystal business profitable?
It can be, but the margin is the gap between oil cost and crystal price, so it is thin and moves with the mint crop. In our illustrative sample, a 230 kg per day unit earns a net profit of ₹30.26 lakh on sales of ₹560.28 lakh in Year 3. Break-even is at about 49% of capacity. Oil buying skill decides real results.
What is the GST rate on menthol crystals?
Natural menthol and menthol crystals made from natural menthol attract 5% GST from 22 September 2025, down from 12%. Menthol and crystals made from other than natural menthol moved to 18%. Mentha oil bought from an unregistered supplier falls under reverse charge, so the registered buyer pays the tax. Confirm the current position with your tax adviser.
What is DMO and can a menthol unit sell it?
DMO, or dementholised oil, is the liquid left after menthol crystallises out of mentha oil. It still carries some menthol and has its own buyers in the flavour, fragrance and oral-care trade. A menthol crystal unit sells DMO as a by-product, and a sound project report counts that sale instead of treating the oil as waste.
Can I get a PMEGP loan for a menthol crystal unit?
Yes, if the project cost is within the PMEGP limit of ₹50 lakh for manufacturing, which suits a small freeze-only unit. The margin money subsidy is 15–35% depending on category and location. Larger units usually take an MSME term loan, often with CGTMSE guarantee cover, which now goes up to ₹10 crore. Each lender needs a project report with DSCR.
Is the menthol crystal project report PDF free, and can I use it for a loan?
The sample PDF is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and loan scheme.
