| NaOH also known as lye and caustic soda, is a caustic metallic base. Sodium hydroxide is available in various forms, but pure sodium hydroxide is most typically available in the form of a white color solid or either in the form of pellets, flakes, granules or as a 50% saturated solution. Caustic soda is one of the basic building blocks of chemistry and as such it finds diversified applications. A few of the broad use categories are: chemical manufacturing; pulp and paper manufacturing; cleaning products; petroleum and natural gas; cellulose film; cotton textile process; and water treatment. Caustic soda, especially when used for pH control, neutralization of waste acids, and similar applications, competes with other alkalies, particularly sodium carbonate (soda ash). The common factors for selecting caustic soda are its stronger basicity and easier storage and handling. One of the major chemical uses of caustic soda is in the manufacture of alumina from bauxite. Caustic soda is used to some extent in all of the chemical pulping processes: sulfate, sulfite, and soda. Caustic soda is used in mercerizing and scouring cotton fabrics and fibers. Two other uses of caustic soda are in water treatment and food processing. Caustic soda is used in several applications by the petroleum and natural gas industry for production and in the processing of products. Rutile is a mineral composed primarily of titanium dioxide, TiO2. Rutile is the most common natural form of TiO2. Rutile has among the highest refractive indices of any known mineral and also exhibits high dispersion. Natural rutile may contain up to 10% iron and significant amounts of niobium and tantalum. Synthetic rutile was first produced in 1948 and is sold under a variety of names. Very pure synthetic rutile is transparent and almost colorless (slightly yellow) in large pieces. Synthetic rutile can be made in a variety of colors by doping, although the purest material is almost colorless. Rutile is seldom used in jewellery because it is not very hard (scratch-resistant), measuring only about 6 on the Mohs hardness scale. Demand for soda ash grew by 6.9 per cent in 2009-10 over the previous year, boosted by strong demand from the glass sector. However, utilization rates for soda ash remain under pressure, owing to an unprecedented rise in imports from China. To prevent the domestic industry, government has continued to impose safeguard duty on both caustic soda and soda ash till April, 2011. The largest segment for caustic soda is the paper industry, with newsprint claiming a near 20 to 25% share. Manmade fibres use about 19% of caustic soda supplies. Soaps and detergents and aluminum industry claim another 20%. Other chemicals and pharmaceutical industries use about 12 to 15%. Water treatment and others constitute the remaining consumer segments.
