Polycarbonate manufacturing in India is really three businesses, and only one of them is open to a first-time entrepreneur. Making the resin (the raw plastic granule) needs a chemical complex costing thousands of crores, and India has no commercial resin plant running today. Making sheet from imported granules is the realistic entry: an extrusion line melts the granules and forms solid, multiwall or corrugated sheet for roofing, greenhouses, signage and glazing. The third route is cutting, bending and fitting bought-in sheet, which needs the least money and skill.

Settle two things before you commit to the sheet route: where your granules will come from, since all the resin is imported and priced in dollars, and who will buy your sheet when established makers already sell it.

Which polycarbonate manufacturing business can you start: resin, sheet or fabrication?

Resin is out of reach for an MSME. Deepak Chem Tech announced a ₹5,000 crore plant at Dahej for 165,000 tonnes a year in November 2024, and August 2026 reporting puts the full integrated project, which also makes its own raw materials, at ₹11,500 crore. The table shows where the practical line falls.

RouteWhat you make or doCapital scaleMain risk
Resin plantPolycarbonate granules from chemical raw materials₹5,000 crore for the resin plant aloneNot an MSME project; years to build
Sheet extrusionSolid, multiwall and corrugated sheet from bought granulesSet by line width and output; no verified public benchmark, so get quotesResin price swings and established rivals
Fabrication or dealingCut, bent and fitted sheet bought from makersLowest of the three: stock and toolsLow entry barrier, so many rivals

Unless you already have polymer processing experience, run a fabrication or dealership first. An extrusion line earns only when it runs steadily, and an idle line still carries resin stock, power and loan instalments. If extrusion does not suit you, other plastic business ideas sit in the same sector.

Where will the granules come from, and what changes when Deepak's plant starts?

India imports almost 300,000 tonnes of polycarbonate resin a year, according to Deepak Nitrite's chief executive in a June 2025 interview. The Dahej plant was first targeted for December 2027, and August 2026 reporting describes a window from late 2027 into the 2028-29 financial year. Plan on imported resin until it proves its output.

Import prices follow the world market, so the timing of a resin purchase matters as much as the sheet price you quote. Buy the extrusion grade made for your sheet type, not a moulding grade; Covestro's Makrolon range lists separate extrusion grades for solid, multiwall and corrugated sheet. Processors cluster in Gujarat's industrial areas; MG Polyplast, an established sheet maker, runs a plant at Ahmedabad.

What does a polycarbonate sheet unit cost, and what moves the price per kg?

No single benchmark exists, because cost depends on the choices in this table.

Cost itemWhat sets itHow to firm it up
Extrusion lineSheet width, output in kg an hour, solid or multiwall, a second extruder for the UV skinQuotes from three line makers. For scale, two Jwell solid-sheet models list 450 and 550 kg/h at 1,300 and 2,100 mm width
Resin stockDollar import price, grade, order sizeDated quotes from importers on the same grade
Power, cooling and buildingOutput and line lengthConnected load and layout drawing from the line maker
Scrap and trimEdge trimming and start-up wasteAsk how scrap is reused; see plastic waste recycling

Profit is the gap between the selling price of sheet and the cost of resin, power, labour and scrap. We found no verified margin for Indian sheet makers, so work it out from your own quotes. Compare offers at the same thickness, UV layer and written warranty, because a lower price can hide a thinner sheet or a weaker UV layer.

How is polycarbonate sheet made?

  1. Dry the granules. Moisture left in them breaks the plastic down as it melts and weakens the sheet. Covestro advises drying at 120 °C and keeping residual moisture at or below 0.01% for extrusion, or removing it in the extruder with a degassing unit.
  2. Melt and push. A single-screw extruder melts the granules. Covestro gives a melt temperature at the die of 240 to 300 °C.
  3. Filter and meter. A screen changer catches impurities and a metering pump keeps the flow steady, so thickness stays even.
  4. Add the UV skin. A second, smaller extruder lays a UV-protective layer on one or both faces, as Palram describes for its UV1 and UV2 sheets.
  5. Shape in the die. A T-die spreads the melt to sheet width, and a vacuum calibration table with cooling fixes its size and shape.
  6. Pull, relax and cut. Haul-off rollers draw the sheet at a steady speed, an annealing oven relieves internal stress, and a cutter trims to length.

Which machines does a sheet line need?

The list follows Jwell's published multiwall line.

MachineWhat it does
Resin dryer with vacuum loaderDries granules and feeds the extruder
Main extruderMelts and pumps the polymer; Jwell rates its multiwall extruders from up to 350 kg/h to 450-500 kg/h of melt
Co-extruderApplies the UV skin
Screen changer and metering pumpFilter the melt and steady the flow
T-die and vacuum calibration tableForm the sheet, then set its size and cool it
Haul-off unit, annealing oven and corona unitDraw the sheet, relieve stress, prepare the surface for printing or bonding
CutterCuts the sheet to length

Which approvals does a sheet unit need, and is BIS certification still compulsory?

The government rescinded 14 quality control orders on 12 November 2025, and polycarbonate was one of them, so the order that made BIS certification mandatory for polycarbonate no longer applies. IS 14443 remains the Indian standard for polycarbonate sheets, covering solid, multiwall and thin sheets. Build your test routine around it.

You will also need Udyam and GST registration, local factory and fire permissions, and the consent your State Pollution Control Board requires for plastic processing.

Where does polycarbonate sheet fall short, and who buys it?

Polycarbonate scratches easily, yellows and turns brittle under long UV exposure unless stabilised, is attacked by hydrocarbons and alkalis, and loses strength after long contact with water above 60 °C, according to UL Prospector. Makers answer with hard coatings and the UV skin from step 4, so warranty terms matter.

For a small sheet maker the nearer buyers are roofing contractors, signage printers and growers; the greenhouse farming guide shows that buyer's side. SABIC added UV-protected sheet lines at Vadodara in 2009, and MG Polyplast sells solid, multiwall and corrugated ranges, so a same-sheet, lower-price entry rarely works. Compete on a thickness range they skip, a longer written UV warranty, or delivery time in your region.

What should you do before ordering a sheet line?

  1. Write down five buyers you can name, with the sheet type and thickness each uses.
  2. Collect quotes from three line makers and two resin sources on the same grade, then ask each line maker for a trial run on that grade.
  3. Buy IS 14443 and list the tests you can run in-house and those that need an outside laboratory.
  4. Build the project report from those quotes, since a lender will want them; how a feasibility study works explains the structure.
  5. If extrusion does not suit you, compare other chemical manufacturing ideas.

Frequently asked questions

Can a small entrepreneur manufacture polycarbonate resin in India?

No, not realistically. Deepak Chem Tech's announced resin plant alone is ₹5,000 crore for 165,000 tonnes a year. A smaller promoter should buy granules and extrude sheet, or fabricate bought-in sheet.

Who are the largest polycarbonate producers?

Expert Market Research's 2026 list names Covestro, SABIC, Teijin, Mitsubishi Chemical, Formosa Chemicals & Fibre and Trinseo among the leading producers. India has no commercial resin producer yet, so Indian processors import their granules.

What is the price of polycarbonate per kg in India?

Imported resin follows the dollar price; ALCHEMPro reported it falling from $2.40 a kg in January 2023 to $2.07 in December 2023. Rupee prices depend on grade, duty, freight and order size, so ask importers for dated quotes.

How long does polycarbonate sheet last?

Life depends on the UV layer, the grade and the climate, so no single number is honest. UL Prospector notes standard grades are not suited to long UV exposure and may turn brittle. Ask for a written warranty and check which faces carry UV protection.

Is polycarbonate more expensive than glass?

Compare the installed cost of the same opening, not the sheet price alone. Palram states its sheets weigh less than half as much as glass, which may allow lighter framing, but polycarbonate needs a UV layer and scratches more easily. The glass processing plant guide covers the product being replaced.
