A banana ripening chamber business ripens mature green bananas to an even yellow in sealed, insulated rooms using ethylene gas, and earns either a service fee or the trading margin on the fruit. The banana ripening chamber project cost is easy to underestimate, because machinery is only part of the bill. For subsidy purposes the National Horticulture Board (NHB) counts ₹1 lakh per tonne of capacity, so a 40-tonne unit has an admissible cost of ₹40 lakh. A full plant costs more: the project report from Niir Project Consultancy Services (NPCS) for an 8-tonne-a-day ripe banana plant lists machinery at ₹32 lakh and the whole project at ₹193 lakh. Before you size anything, settle three things: who sends you green fruit every week, who takes ripe fruit promptly, and whether you ripen for others or buy and sell yourself.

What is the banana ripening chamber project cost, and what does it include?

The three published figures differ because each counts something different.

Reference pointCapacityCost
NHB subsidy normPer tonne of capacity₹1 lakh
Bihar horticulture guideline, worked exampleFive chambers of 7 tonnes each₹35 lakh
NPCS project report, banana ripening chamber8 tonnes of ripe banana a dayMachinery ₹32 lakh; cost of project ₹193 lakh

Treat the NHB figure as the ceiling used to work out subsidy, not as a quote. It assumes 11 cubic metres of chamber per tonne, and NHB's technical standards ask for chambers of at least 50 cubic metres (roughly 4 tonnes of fruit), usually four to eight of them, so loads can be staggered.

The gap between ₹32 lakh and ₹193 lakh is where first budgets go wrong. A full project report also counts land, building, working capital and other items beyond machinery.

Which banana ripening business model should you start with?

Three models use the same chambers but carry different risks.

ModelHow it earnsMain risk
Ripening serviceA fee per crate or kilo on fruit others sendIdle chambers when supply dips
Buy green, sell ripeThe margin between purchase and sale pricePrice swings, rejects and fruit stock all fall on you
Service plus pack houseHandling fees from buyers who need sorted, packed fruitNeeds buyer contracts before the civil work starts

Start with the service model unless buyers are already waiting. NHB groups ripening chambers with pack houses and refrigerated vans as integrated post-harvest projects, so a cold storage business can be added later. Supply planning starts with banana farming in India, and related units are listed under food processing business ideas.

Ethylene gas is the permitted method and calcium carbide is banned, as the guidance note on artificial ripening from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) sets out.

MethodStatusIn the chamber
Ethylene from cylinders, cans or generatorsPermittedUp to 100 parts per million (ppm) for 24-48 hours
Ethephon powder in cellulose sachetsPermittedFruit must not touch the powder; remove the sachet after 24 hours
Dipping fruit in ethephon solutionNot allowedDirect contact with liquid or powder ethylene sources is prohibited
Calcium carbide or acetyleneBannedCarbide near crates can be treated as evidence for prosecution

In an advisory dated 16 April 2026, FSSAI asked states to step up inspections of mandis, godowns and ripening chambers, with strip tests for acetylene, and flagged ethephon dipping.

A ripening chamber handles food for sale, so plan for FSSAI registration or a licence. An FSSAI order of 13 March 2026 sets, from 1 April 2026, registration up to ₹1.5 crore turnover, a state licence up to ₹50 crore, and a central licence above that. FSSAI's licensing portal has no category named ripening, so ask your district food safety officer which storage or wholesale category fits.

How are bananas ripened commercially, and what equipment does a chamber need?

The ripening cycle

  1. Receive mature green fruit with no cuts or bruises.
  2. Load so air moves through the boxes, filling no more than 75% of the chamber volume.
  3. Bring the room to 15 to 18 °C and 90 to 95% humidity.
  4. Seal the room and release ethylene. NHB's technical standards list 100 to 150 ppm for banana, but FSSAI caps it at 100 ppm, so dose to the cap.
  5. Hold for 24 to 48 hours, then ventilate about every six hours, or use a scrubber, to keep carbon dioxide under 5,000 ppm.
  6. Hold ripe fruit at 13 to 14 °C until dispatch; UC Davis postharvest research puts chilling injury below 13 °C.
  7. Log temperature, humidity, ethylene and carbon dioxide each batch.

Equipment to specify

ItemWhat to ask the supplier (NHB and Bihar specifications)
Insulated chamberPolyurethane foam (PUF) panels 60-120 mm thick, density at least 40 kg per cubic metre; insulated floor
Refrigeration and heatingCapacity from a heat load calculation; eco-friendly refrigerant
Fans and ductingAt least 2,000 cubic metres of air per hour per tonne
Ethylene supplyGenerator, cartridges or a 5% ethylene cylinder, with leak monitoring
Sensors and loggersTemperature, humidity, ethylene and carbon dioxide readouts with logging
Loading and fire safetyPallet lifter or forklift; heat and smoke detectors

Ethylene above 27,000 ppm is explosive, so leak alarms and a no-smoking rule are part of the design.

What return can a banana ripening chamber give, and what decides it?

In the NPCS project report for the 8-tonne-a-day banana ripening plant, the rate of return is 23% and break-even is 63%. At that capacity, break-even means moving about 5 tonnes a day before costs are covered. A fixed monthly income cannot be quoted, because it depends on five things.

DriverWhy it matters
UtilisationPower, staff and interest continue on idle days
Fee or margin per kiloService fees follow local competition; trading margins follow green fruit prices
RejectsUneven colour, bruising and cold damage reduce sellable weight
PowerRefrigeration and heating run all cycle; backup power adds cost
Buyer creditLate payment ties up working capital

Can you get a subsidy or bank loan for a banana ripening chamber?

Yes, through NHB and the State Horticulture Missions. The April 2025 guidelines of the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture still list ripening chambers as entrepreneur-driven projects with credit-linked, back-ended subsidy: a bank term loan funds the project, and the subsidy is adjusted after inspection.

NHB's 2017 scheme guideline gives 35% of admissible cost in general areas and 50% in hilly, north-eastern and scheduled areas, while Bihar's guideline shows 50%, and 75% for farmer producer organisations. The percentage applies to the admissible ₹1 lakh per tonne, so a 40-tonne chamber is subsidised on ₹40 lakh at most. Confirm the current rate with NHB or your State Horticulture Mission before ordering.

Banks will want a project report with capacity, machinery, cost of production, break-even and cash flow; our detailed project report guide explains the format. NPCS has prepared over 5,000 project reports since 1994, and its report on this product is the source of the figures above.

What should you do before spending on a banana ripening chamber?

  1. Get commitments from two or three green-fruit suppliers and ripe-fruit buyers before deciding the size.
  2. Collect quotes against NHB's technical standards, with airflow and insulation figures in writing.
  3. Ask your district food safety officer which FSSAI category applies.
  4. Meet your bank and State Horticulture Mission before placing orders, because subsidy projects are inspected during construction.

An NPCS project report on a banana ripening chamber works out capacity, machinery, working capital, cost of production, break-even and cash flow for your plant size, in the layout banks usually expect. It does not replace supplier quotes or a bank's appraisal.

Frequently asked questions

Which business gives ₹2 lakh per month?

No business gives a fixed monthly figure. Income is the tonnes you ripen each month times your fee or margin per kilo, minus power, labour, rejects and interest. Start from the fee you can charge locally and work out the tonnes ₹2 lakh needs.

What is the cost of 1 kg of bananas?

There is no single price; it changes with variety, grade, season and whether the fruit is green at the mandi or ripe at retail. For a ripening business, the useful number is the gap between green purchase price and ripe sale price, or your fee per kilo.

Is the banana ripening business profitable?

It can be, if the chambers stay loaded. The NPCS project report for an 8-tonne-a-day plant shows a 23% rate of return and 63% break-even, so it needs about two-thirds of capacity in use.

Yes. FSSAI permits ethylene gas for ripening fruit, up to 100 ppm in the chamber, from cylinders, generators or ethephon sachets that keep the fruit out of direct contact. Calcium carbide and acetylene are banned, and the 2026 advisory to states targets those and ethephon dipping.
