To start a business in Bahrain from India, settle the activity first and the company form second. An Indian can own a Bahraini company, but whether you can hold every share depends on what the company does. Food manufacturing and logistics are open to full foreign ownership, while most trading, import and export activities need at least one share held by a national of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

After that, registration runs online through the government's Sijilat portal: reserve a name, clear the security check, receive the commercial registration, then the licence, notarised founding papers and a bank account. A limited liability company has no fixed minimum capital under Sijilat's rules, and ordinary businesses pay no corporate income tax. The slowest step is usually the bank, not the ministry.

Which Bahrain businesses suit an Indian founder?

The table pairs each idea with a demand signal and an ownership position to confirm first. For other budgets and places, start from our business ideas hub.

IdeaDemand signalOwnership position
Indian food and grocery tradingRice, butter and boneless meat are among India's main exports to Bahrain (Embassy of India, Manama, trade note).Trade usually needs a GCC shareholder.
Aluminium and scrap sourcing for Indian buyersIndia imports aluminium alloys, coils, aluminium waste, copper scrap, urea and methanol from Bahrain (same note).Trade, so expect a GCC shareholder.
Food processing and catering supplyAccommodation and food services grew 6.4% in 2025, the joint fastest sector (Arab News, April 2026).Food manufacturing is on the full foreign list.
Consulting, design and IT servicesProfessional and technical activities also grew 6.4% in 2025 (Arab News).Varies; accounting needs 51% GCC.
Data protection consultancy and cloud servicesAmazon Web Services opened the region's first hyperscale data centre in Bahrain in 2019 (Bahrain EDB).Added to the up to 100% foreign list in December 2025.

Can an Indian own 100% of a company in Bahrain?

Not for every activity. Bahrain's Decision 40 of 2021 groups commercial activities by permitted foreign ownership, as Al Tamimi's overview of the decision explains. Full foreign ownership is accurate for many activities, but your activity's group decides your share.

GroupExamplesWhat it means for you
Bahraini onlyFishing, postal services, employment officesClosed to foreign founders.
At least 51% GCCConstruction, accounting, private securityYou can hold at most 49%.
Foreign with a GCC minimumMost sale, trade, import and export activitiesThe GCC shareholder can hold as little as one share, so a 99.9 to 0.1 split is possible.
Full foreign ownershipFood manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, schools, logistics, telecommunicationsNo local partner needed.

A corporate GCC shareholder must itself be wholly GCC-owned up its chain. The groups also move: a December 2025 amendment (Decision 71 of 2025) added data protection consultancy, electric power generation, port operation and real estate brokerage to the up to 100% foreign list, per Al Tamimi. Confirm your activity's current group on Sijilat before committing.

Which company form should you pick?

Three forms suit a first venture.

How to register a company in Bahrain, step by step

This order follows Bahrain EDB's registration guide and the Sijilat user guide.

  1. Pick a provider and an activity. Choose a service provider from Bahrain EDB's list, then select your activity on Sijilat. Each activity has its own conditions and documents.
  2. Reserve the name. Submit three name options on Sijilat. EDB's guide asks for English and Arabic versions.
  3. Prepare documents. Resolutions, passport copies, a power of attorney, ultimate beneficial owner details and, for a corporate shareholder, its registration certificate and constitutional papers. Papers issued outside Bahrain are apostilled or authenticated, then notarised.
  4. Apply for the commercial registration. Sijilat issues it without a licence after the security clearance and name check.
  5. Secure a business address. EDB names an incubator, a business centre, an office lease or a land lease as the options.
  6. Get licence approvals and sign. Municipal and activity approvals come first. Then sign the Memorandum of Association before a public notary.
  7. Open the bank account. Deposit capital where the activity needs it.
  8. Register to operate. Open a Labour Market Regulatory Authority account for employees, register Bahraini staff with the Social Insurance Organization, and register with the National Bureau for Revenue.

Published totals vary widely, so build the budget from its parts.

What should Indian residents check before sending money to Bahrain?

If you live in India, your stake in a Bahrain company is an overseas direct investment under the Reserve Bank of India's Overseas Investment Directions of August 2022. Five rules shape the plan.

  • Route. Resident individuals may invest alone, jointly or with an Indian entity.
  • Ceiling. The money counts toward the Liberalised Remittance Scheme limit of USD 250,000 per financial year. Pre-incorporation expenses are capped at USD 100,000 per foreign entity and also count toward that limit.
  • Sectors. An individual cannot invest in a foreign entity engaged in financial services, so a Bahrain fintech or fund idea is closed to you as an individual.
  • Funding type. A resident individual cannot make a financial commitment by way of debt, so plan to fund the company with equity.
  • Reporting. An annual performance report is due, certified by a chartered accountant where no statutory audit applies.

Review this list with an authorised dealer bank and a chartered accountant before the first remittance.

What should you do in the first month?

List the exact activities you need and check each against the ownership groups above. Ask two providers from EDB's list for itemised quotes and compare them with its fee schedule. Before committing money, test the idea with our guides to project identification and a feasibility study. If exporting from India without a local company suits you better, see export and import business ideas, and for raising the equity, see startup funding in India.

Frequently asked questions about starting a business in Bahrain

What is the easiest business to start in Bahrain as an Indian?

No single business wins, but the easiest has an activity on the full foreign ownership list, needs no regulator's licence and carries no stock. A consultancy fits that pattern. Check the activity on Sijilat first, because accounting, for example, needs a majority GCC owner.

Can I use a virtual office or Sijili registration?

Not Sijili, which is for Bahraini nationals. A foreign-owned company needs a business address, and EDB lists incubators, business centres, office leases and land leases. Ask your provider which type your activity accepts before paying.

How long does registration take?

Commercial registration can often be completed in under two weeks, and licensing plus registration typically takes one to three weeks, according to the Sovereign Group's October 2025 note. The bank account usually takes longer.

How can I earn money in Bahrain?

Through a salary or your own company. An employer registers each employee through its Labour Market Regulatory Authority account (Bahrain EDB's guide), so a job offer from a registered company is the salary route. As an owner you earn from profits, and your own residence is a separate application: the national portal lists an investor self-sponsorship residence permit with its own conditions.

Will a Bahrain bank open an account for a one-owner company?

It is possible but slower. Account opening often takes longer than registration; banks typically want a Bahrain-based signatory, ownership disclosures and evidence of funding, and single-shareholder companies face extra scrutiny (Sovereign Group, October 2025). Apply as soon as the registration arrives.
