Adhesives can be defined as a material used for bonding that exhibits flow at the time of application. In geometry, the surface is a two-dimensional geometric figure that limits the space filled with matter, i.e. surface in a theoretical sense. In mechanics, the surface is defined as the edge of a material body, which may be analysed in a molecular scale, micro- and macro size. There are certain adhesion theories based on surface chemical phenomena. In some special cases, either pure adsorption, or electrical or diffusion attractive forces are found at an adhesive-bound interface.

Material should have following characteristics to behave like an adhesive

Ø  It must "wet" the surfaces

Ø  It must adhere to the surfaces

Ø  It must develop strength

Ø  It must remain stable

Adhesive raw material types

There are three types of raw materials

Ø  Natural

Ø  Semi synthetic

Ø  Inorganic

Types of adhesives

There are basically two types of adhesives: resin-based and gum-based. In between the two types, there are various categories of adhesives sold in the market place. These include:

·         Natural adhesives

·         Synthetic adhesives

·         Drying adhesives

·         Contact adhesives

·         Hot adhesives

·         Reactive adhesives

·         Pressure sensitive adhesives

Adhesives can be used in creating adhesive joints, sealing, applying protective or decorative coating (paint or varnish), printing, furniture, construction, stationery and others. Surface Preparation Techniques for adhesives

·         Chromic Acid Etch

·         Sulfuric Acid Anodizing and “Hard” Anodizing

·         Phosphoric Acid Anodizing

·         Chromic Acid Anodizing

Market structure

Over the last few years, the adhesive business has seen global players setting up new capacities in India. With customs duty nearing Asian levels, competition will further intensify from imports as well as the low cost local players. The market size of all types of adhesives is very large and growing. Of this, the premium products account for some 45%. Quantitatively, the overall market size is growing annually at 11%.

Jubilant Organosys established a plant to manufacture Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM) and introduced its synthetic wood adhesive Vamicol in 1989. Vamicol has logged a growth of 12-15%.It has nearly 15,000 outlets throughout the country.  Pidilite Industries is the largest adhesive manufacturer in India, with its most famous product being Fevicol. It is the market leader in adhesives and sealants, construction chemicals, hobby colours and polymer emulsions in India. Fevicol is now claimed to be the largest selling adhesives brand in Asia. The company's wholly owned US subsidiary Pidilite USA Inc, acquired Cyclo brand in June 2006. Cyclo products are sold in the USA and over 50 other countries. It also acquired Sargent Art brand at the same time. The product range includes crayons, tempera colours, acrylic colours, modelling clay and many other products.

Bostik of the UK, another 100% Totalfina-Elf subsidiary, had a technical collaboration with Coates of India for the manufacture of industrial adhesives in the country. The company has already expanded its capacity by setting up a plant at Ahmedabad and increasing the capacity of its plant at Noida (UP). ICI India has acquired controlling interest in Polyinks Pvt Ltd a hotmelt adhesives company and  helped the business to improve its market share in the book binding and soap wrapper adhesive segments.
