What is a vermicompost project report?
A vermicompost project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that uses earthworms to turn cow dung and crop waste into organic manure. It sets out bed capacity, sheds, machinery, feedstock supply, Fertiliser (Control) Order approvals, project cost, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even for a lender or subsidy office.
Promoters use it to size the unit and apply for a PMEGP or bank term loan, and credit officers use it to judge whether compost sales can repay the loan.
Also known as: vermicompost business plan, project report on vermicompost, vermicomposting unit DPR, vermicompost plant project report.
What a bank checks in a vermicompost project report
A vermicompost unit sells a low-priced, bulky product, so lenders look hard at price, feedstock cost and credit. These are the values in our sample report and why each one matters.
This is a bulk price, about ₹8.5 a kg before GST. Banks reject reports that price all output at retail pack rates.
Cow dung and crop waste look cheap, but haulage adds up. A share far below this usually means freight was left out.
Dealers and FPOs pay after the season. Trade receivables are the largest part of working capital in the sample.
Debt service coverage ratio is cash available divided by loan dues. The sample's lowest year is 1.60, in Year 2.
Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your capacity, feedstock source and buyers.
Vermicompost manufacturing plant cost in India
Cost depends on how many tonnes of beds you run and how much handling is mechanised. The commercial tier is the plant in our sample report; the two smaller tiers are indicative.
Farm-scale unit
₹5–15 lakh
About 100–300 MT a year, open or thatched sheds
- Sheds and beds₹2–6 lakh
- Shredder, sieve, pump₹1–4 lakh
- Worms and working capital₹1–4 lakh
Fits PMEGP, subject to limits
Small commercial unit
₹40–90 lakh
About 3–6 MT per day, HDPE or brick beds
- Machinery and beds₹20–45 lakh
- Land, sheds and yard₹12–30 lakh
- Working capital margin₹4–10 lakh
PMEGP up to ₹50 lakh, or an MSME term loan
Commercial plant
₹170.19 lakh
12 MT per day, 3,600 MT per year
- Plant and machinery₹86.67 lakh
- Building and civil works₹41.48 lakh
- Working capital margin₹9.48 lakh
Term loan ₹127.64 lakh (75%), promoter ₹42.55 lakh
Farm-scale and small commercial ranges are indicative. Costs vary with land, shed type and how much loading is done by machine.
Vermicompost manufacturing process
Only about 30% of the feedstock weight comes out as finished vermicompost, so a 12 MT per day plant handles roughly three times that tonnage of waste. The work runs in six stages.
- Shredding and mixing
Crop residue is shredded and mixed with cow dung, the main food and source of microbes for the worms.
- Pre-decomposition
The mix is kept moist in heaps for about two to three weeks until the heat of early composting dies down, since hot material kills worms.
- Bed loading and stocking
Beds no wider than 1.5 metres are filled and stocked with Eisenia fetida or Eudrilus eugeniae worms.
- Vermicomposting
Beds stay shaded and covered at 40–50% moisture and about 20–30°C for 60–75 days while worms turn the waste into castings.
- Harvesting
Watering stops a few days before harvest so worms move down, and the finished top layer is removed.
- Sieving, testing and bagging
Compost is shade-dried, screened through 3–6 mm mesh to recover worms and cocoons, tested for moisture and nutrients, then bagged.
Raw materials for vermicompost production
Cow dung is the largest raw material cost in the sample, at 45%. Most units sign seasonal contracts with dairies, gaushalas and sugar mills, because a plant that runs short of feedstock leaves beds idle.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Cow dung | 45% | 34.76 |
| Crop residue and agro waste | 30% | 23.17 |
| Press mud or other organic waste | 15% | 11.59 |
| Neem cake and rock phosphate for enrichment | 10% | 7.72 |
| Total | 100% | 77.24 |
Earthworms are not a running cost. The starter stock is bought once and is included with the beds under machinery.
Machinery for a vermicompost plant
A commercial plant spends most of its machinery budget on moving material, not on processing it. The tractor with front loader is the largest single item in the sample.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Tractor with front loader and trolley | Brings in dung, loads and empties beds | 22.54 |
| Rotary trommel sieving machine | Screens compost and recovers worms | 15.60 |
| Agro waste shredder | Cuts straw and stalks to feedable size | 12.14 |
| HDPE vermi beds with starter earthworm stock | Hold the composting mass | 12.13 |
| Water sprinkler and pumping system | Keeps beds at the right moisture | 7.80 |
| Belt conveyors | Feed the sieve and the bagging point | 6.93 |
| Bag filling and stitching machine | Fills and closes HDPE bags | 5.20 |
| Weighing scales and testing kit | Weighs bags, checks moisture and pH | 4.33 |
| Total plant and machinery | 86.67 | |

Who buys vermicompost in bulk?
Demand comes from growers moving to organic and natural farming, and from horticulture, where vermicompost is mixed into potting media. Bulk orders peak before kharif and rabi sowing, so a unit builds stock in the off-season and sells it in a few busy months.
- Agri-input dealers and distributors
- Farmer producer organisations (FPOs)
- Nurseries and horticulture farms
- Tea, coffee and spice plantations
- Home garden and online retailers, in small packs
- Landscaping contractors
Where a new unit wins: vermicompost is cheap per tonne, so freight decides who can supply a district. A plant close to both its dung source and its buyers can undercut larger units that ship from far away.
FCO certificate and licences for a vermicompost unit
Vermicompost is an organic fertiliser under the Fertiliser (Control) Order, 1985, so the state agriculture department regulates both making and selling it.
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) registration and GST registration |
|---|---|
| Certificate of manufacture | Apply in Form D to the state registering authority; valid for three years. Non-government units making under 50 MT of vermicompost a year are exempt |
| Authorisation to sell | Memorandum of intimation in Form A1 with a certificate of source; the acknowledgement in Form A2 serves as the authorisation |
| Product standard | Must meet the vermicompost standard in Schedule IV, Part A of the FCO; bags are marked as organic fertiliser |
| Pollution board | Organic manure made by manual mixing is on the white category list in states such as Tamil Nadu; check how your state board treats a mechanised plant |
| GST | HSN 3101. Organic fertiliser in unit containers bearing a brand name is listed at 5%; confirm the rate for loose bulk sales with your tax adviser |
Checked against the FCO text, the TNPCB list and a GST advance ruling in October 2026. Rules change, so confirm with your state authorities.
Loans and schemes for a vermicompost business
PMEGP
Manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakhMargin-money subsidy of 15–35% for new units. Suits farm-scale and small commercial units.
Mudra
Smaller loans for micro unitsFor a first unit that buys dung locally and sells bagged compost nearby.
MSME term loan with CGTMSE
Commercial plantsGuarantee cover can reduce the collateral asked for on a larger plant like the sample.
Scheme limits change. Confirm current terms with the bank or the scheme portal before applying.
Mistakes that weaken a vermicompost project report
- Pricing bulk output at retail rates
Small garden packs sell for many times the bulk price per kg. Most of a commercial plant's output moves in bulk, and revenue must say so.
- Forgetting the 30% recovery
Output is about a third of the input weight. A report that sizes feedstock, sheds or haulage on output tonnes runs short by a wide margin.
- Assuming even production all year
Worms slow down in peak heat and cold, and sales bunch before sowing. Finished goods stock and working capital must cover the gap.
- Skipping moisture and quality testing
Wet or under-matured compost can fail the FCO standard when a sample is drawn, and it also weighs more than the bag claims.

Vermicompost project report: frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to set up a vermicompost unit in India?
A farm-scale unit of 100–300 MT a year needs roughly ₹5–15 lakh, and a 3–6 MT per day commercial unit about ₹40–90 lakh. Our sample report models a 12 MT per day plant at ₹170.19 lakh, including land, sheds, machinery and working capital margin. These are indicative figures; a project report prices your own capacity and site.
Is vermicompost manufacturing profitable?
It can be, if feedstock is cheap and output is sold in bulk without long credit. In our illustrative sample, a 12 MT per day unit earns ₹37.24 lakh net profit on ₹214.70 lakh sales in Year 3, with break-even at 35% of capacity. Profit falls quickly if cow dung must be bought from far away or the selling price drops.
How long does one vermicompost cycle take?
Most units plan for 60–75 days in the bed after the waste has been pre-decomposed, which allows five to six harvests a year from each bed. Cycles run slower in peak summer and in cold weather, because the worms work best at about 20–30°C with 40–50% moisture.
Do I need a licence to make and sell vermicompost?
Yes, in most cases. Under the Fertiliser (Control) Order, 1985, a maker of organic fertiliser needs a certificate of manufacture and an authorisation to sell from the state. The product must also meet the Schedule IV vermicompost standard. Non-government vermicompost units below 50 MT a year are exempt from the certificate. You also need Udyam and GST registration.
Vermicompost ka business kaise shuru kare?
Start by fixing a steady source of cow dung and crop waste within a short haul, then size the beds to that supply. Next, get Udyam and GST registration, plan the FCO certificate and line up dealers or FPOs as buyers. A project report with costs and projections then supports your PMEGP or bank loan application.
Can I get a PMEGP loan for a vermicompost unit?
Yes, a vermicompost unit can apply under PMEGP if the project cost is within the ₹50 lakh limit for manufacturing. The margin-money subsidy is 15–35% depending on your category and whether the unit is urban or rural. The bank still checks the project report, your feedstock tie-up and your own contribution before it sanctions the loan.
Is the vermicompost project report PDF free, and can I use it for a loan?
The sample PDF is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and loan scheme.
