What is a zinc sulphate project report?
A zinc sulphate project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that leaches zinc ash in sulphuric acid, purifies the solution and crystallises fertiliser grade zinc sulphate. It sets out the process, machinery, raw materials, FCO grade, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even a lender needs.
Promoters use it to size the plant and apply for a term loan; banks use it to judge whether the unit can repay from seasonal fertiliser sales.
Also known as: zinc sulphate business plan, project report on zinc sulphate, DPR for zinc sulphate plant, zinc sulphate heptahydrate project report.

Zinc sulphate manufacturing process from zinc ash
Most small Indian units make zinc sulphate by dissolving zinc ash from galvanising plants in sulphuric acid. The quality of the final crystal is decided mainly in the purification step, because ash carries iron, lead, cadmium and copper with the zinc.
- Washing the ash
Zinc ash is screened and washed with water to remove chloride left by the galvanising flux, which would otherwise end up in the product.
- Acid leaching
Washed ash is added to dilute sulphuric acid in acid-proof, agitated reactors until the zinc dissolves as zinc sulphate solution.
- Iron and manganese removal
An oxidising agent turns dissolved iron and manganese into solids that settle out once the pH is raised slightly.
- Zinc dust cementation
Zinc dust is stirred in to displace copper, cadmium and lead from the solution, so the crystal meets FCO heavy metal limits.
- Filtration
A filter press separates the clear liquor from the residue, which is stored and disposed of under the pollution board's conditions.
- Evaporation and crystallisation
Steam concentrates the liquor and cooling in crystallisers forms zinc sulphate crystals; mother liquor is recycled.
- Centrifuging and drying
A basket centrifuge spins off liquor, and the crystals are dried gently for 21% heptahydrate or harder for 33% monohydrate.
- Testing and packing
Each batch is checked for zinc, sulphur and heavy metals, then packed in lined HDPE bags, usually 25 or 50 kg.
Zinc sulphate 21% or 33%: which grade should you make?
The Fertiliser (Control) Order 1985 lists both grades as micronutrients in Schedule I. The heptahydrate needs simpler drying; the monohydrate needs a hotter dryer but holds about 57% more zinc in every bag.
| Parameter | Heptahydrate (21%) | Monohydrate (33%) |
|---|---|---|
| Zinc as Zn, minimum | 21.0 | 33.0 |
| Sulphur as S, minimum | 10.0 | 15.0 |
| Lead as Pb, maximum | 0.003 | 0.003 |
| Cadmium as Cd, maximum | 0.0025 | 0.0025 |
| Arsenic as As, maximum | 0.01 | 0.01 |
| Matter insoluble in water, maximum | 1.0 | 1.0 |
| pH, not less than | 4.0 | 4.0 |

Raw materials for zinc sulphate
Zinc ash and dross come from hot-dip galvanising plants and zinc smelters, and their zinc content changes from lot to lot. Experienced units buy on a laboratory assay of each truck, not on weight alone, and keep about a month of stock.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Zinc ash and dross | 78% | 462.79 |
| Sulphuric acid | 14% | 83.06 |
| Zinc dust and oxidising agents for purification | 6% | 35.60 |
| Lime for neutralisation | 2% | 11.87 |
| Total | 100% | 593.32 |
Machinery for a zinc sulphate plant
Everything that touches the acid liquor must resist sulphuric acid, so reactors are usually rubber-lined or FRP-lined steel, and pumps and pipes are acid grade.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Leaching and purification reactors | Dissolve ash in acid and clean the liquor | 44.45 |
| Filter press | Separates clear liquor from residue | 16.67 |
| Steam-heated evaporator | Concentrates the liquor | 22.22 |
| Crystallisers with cooling | Form the crystals | 22.22 |
| Basket centrifuge | Removes mother liquor | 16.67 |
| Rotary or fluid bed dryer | Dries to the target grade | 20.37 |
| Boiler | Supplies steam to the evaporator | 18.52 |
| Fume scrubber and effluent treatment | Captures acid mist, treats wash water | 14.82 |
| Weighing and bag stitching | Packs 25 or 50 kg bags | 9.26 |
| Total plant and machinery | 185.20 | |

Who buys zinc sulphate in India?
Farm use drives demand. A review in Frontiers in Soil Science (September 2024) found 39% of Indian soils zinc deficient, based on Soil Health Card data from 2015 to 2019. It also estimated that about 70% of zinc sulphate fertiliser is used in five states: Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Paddy, wheat and maize growers are the main end users. A manufacturer, though, mostly sells through others.
- Agri-input dealers and distributors
- Fertiliser companies making zincated and mixed micronutrient products
- State agriculture departments and cooperatives
- Animal feed and premix makers
- Viscose rayon and electroplating units
Plan for the season: fertiliser sales bunch up before kharif and rabi sowing, and dealers expect credit then. Feed and chemical grade orders help keep the plant running between seasons.
Licences, pollution category and GST for zinc sulphate
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) registration and GST registration |
|---|---|
| Fertiliser authorisation | Memorandum of intimation in Form A1 to the state's notified authority under clause 8 of the Fertiliser (Control) Order 1985; the Form A2 acknowledgement serves as the authorisation |
| Product quality | Each grade must meet its FCO Schedule I specification; inspectors can draw samples for testing |
| Pollution board consent | Consent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board; basic chemical and basic fertiliser manufacture is listed in the Red category in state notifications such as Assam's, so confirm the category with your board |
| Zinc ash handling | Pollution boards register units that reprocess zinc ash, skimmings and dross as hazardous waste recyclers |
| GST | 5% for FCO micronutrients made by FCO-registered manufacturers, from 22 September 2025 under Notification 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate); grades sold as general inorganic chemicals fall under the 18% entry |
Checked in October 2026. Rules differ by state, so confirm with the agriculture department and pollution board before you apply.
Mistakes that weaken a zinc sulphate project report
- Assuming a fixed zinc content in the ash
Ash varies from lot to lot. A report that takes the best assay for every tonne overstates output and understates raw material cost.
- Leaving out purification cost
Without zinc dust and oxidant in the budget, heavy metals stay high and batches can fail the FCO lead and cadmium limits.
- Pricing 21% product at 33% rates
The monohydrate sells higher because it carries more zinc. Mixing up the grades inflates revenue and DSCR.
- Ignoring seasonal stock and credit
Finished goods build up before sowing and dealers pay late. A cash credit limit sized on average months runs short in peak season.
- No plan for residue and acid mist
Leach residue and scrubber liquor need storage and disposal approved by the pollution board, and this costs money every month.

Zinc Sulphate project report: frequently asked questions
What is the zinc sulphate manufacturing plant cost in India?
A small heptahydrate unit of 2–4 MT per day needs roughly ₹80–150 lakh, and a plant of 30–50 MT per day with a monohydrate line needs about ₹10–18 crore. Our sample report models an 11 MT per day unit at ₹378 lakh. These are indicative figures; the cost for your project depends on capacity, grade, land and location.
What raw materials are used to make zinc sulphate?
Zinc ash and dross from galvanising units, and sulphuric acid, are the main inputs. Zinc dust and an oxidising agent purify the solution, and lime neutralises acidic effluent. In our sample report zinc ash and dross make up 78% of raw material cost, so the zinc content of each lot matters more than any other price.
What is the difference between zinc sulphate 21% and 33%?
Zinc sulphate 21% is the heptahydrate, which holds seven molecules of water; 33% is the monohydrate, dried at a higher temperature until one molecule is left. The Fertiliser (Control) Order sets the minimum zinc at 21.0% and 33.0% respectively. The monohydrate costs more to dry but carries more zinc per bag, so freight per kg of zinc is lower.
Do I need a licence to manufacture zinc sulphate fertiliser?
Yes. Zinc sulphate sold as a fertiliser is a micronutrient under the Fertiliser (Control) Order 1985. The manufacturer files a memorandum of intimation with the state agriculture department, and the product must meet the Schedule I specification. You also need pollution board consent and, if you process zinc ash, registration as a hazardous waste reprocessor.
Is zinc sulphate manufacturing profitable?
In our illustrative sample, an 11 MT per day unit earns a 20% return on investment in Year 3. It breaks even at 41% of capacity and pays back in about 3.8 years. Real profit depends on the zinc content and price of the ash you buy, recovery in leaching, the grade mix and how much credit dealers take before each season.
Can I get a PMEGP or bank loan for a zinc sulphate unit?
PMEGP covers manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh, which is below the cost of most zinc sulphate plants. Units above that usually take an MSME term loan, and eligible micro and small enterprises can get collateral-free cover from CGTMSE, whose ceiling is ₹10 crore. Every lender asks for a project report with projections, DSCR and working capital.
Zinc sulphate ka business kaise shuru kare?
Start by fixing the grade, 21% or 33%, and a steady source of zinc ash. Then get a project report to size the plant and the loan. Take FCO authorisation from the state agriculture department and pollution consent, and line up dealers before the kharif season. Our free sample report shows the cost and profit format a bank expects.
Is the sample report free and can I use it for a loan?
The sample is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report; its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, grade, location and loan scheme.
