What is a sodium benzoate project report?

A sodium benzoate project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a plant that neutralises benzoic acid with caustic soda and dries the solution into food or pharma grade powder and granules. It sets out the process, machinery, raw materials, market, project cost, means of finance, projections, DSCR and break-even that a lender reviews.

Chemical entrepreneurs and food ingredient firms use it to size the plant and raise a term loan; banks use it to judge whether a thin-margin conversion business can repay.

Also known as: sodium benzoate plant project report, project report on sodium benzoate, sodium benzoate business plan, DPR for sodium benzoate manufacturing.

Sodium benzoate plant cost and economics

Our sample report models a 5.9 metric tonnes per day plant, or 1,947 MT per year over 330 working days. It starts at 60% of capacity, reaches 80% in Year 5 and sells at ₹1,43,000 per MT before GST.

The debt service coverage ratio (DSCR, cash available to pay the loan divided by what is due) averages 1.49 and never falls below 1.30. That is acceptable but leaves little room, because raw materials take 60.4% of sales.

Term loan at 10.5% with a 6-month moratorium and 54 monthly instalments. All figures are illustrative.

Sodium benzoate manufacturing process

Most Indian units buy benzoic acid and convert it, rather than making the acid from toluene. The conversion is a simple acid and base reaction; the skill lies in purity, colour and a dust-free product.

  1. Dissolution

Benzoic acid is charged into hot demineralised water in an SS 316 reactor with an agitator.

  2. Neutralisation

Caustic soda lye is added slowly at about 70 to 80°C until the solution reaches a pH of about 7.5 to 8.5.

  3. Carbon treatment

Activated carbon is stirred into the hot solution to take out colour and the faint odour of technical-grade acid.

  4. Filtration

A filter press and a polishing filter remove carbon and insolubles, giving a clear liquor for the dryer.

  5. Spray drying

The liquor is atomised into hot air; fine white powder is collected in the cyclone and bag filter.

  6. Sieving and compacting

Powder is sieved, and part of it is compacted and crushed into granules that do not dust when buyers dose them.

  7. Testing and packing

Each batch is checked for assay, moisture, alkalinity and heavy metals, then packed in lined 25 kg bags or fibre drums.

Which process route suits a new sodium benzoate plant?

Four choices shape the cost and the buyers you can serve. Decide them before you ask for machinery quotations.

Neutralising agentCaustic soda lye reacts cleanly and controls pH well. Soda ash is easier to store and handle but releases carbon dioxide, so the reactor foams and batches take longer.
Drying methodA spray dryer gives uniform powder in one step and suits continuous output. A drum dryer or flaker costs less but gives flakes with less even moisture.
Product formPowder sells to most food makers. Granules cost an extra compactor step but are preferred by beverage and pharma plants that want low dust.
Backward integrationMaking benzoic acid by liquid-phase oxidation of toluene needs a far larger plant and investment. A first unit usually buys the acid and keeps the option for later.

Raw materials for sodium benzoate

By molecular weight, 1 kg of sodium benzoate needs about 0.85 kg of benzoic acid and 0.28 kg of caustic soda on a 100% basis. Benzoic acid prices follow toluene, so the report should test a rise in acid price against your selling price.

Buy benzoic acid against IS 4448:2022 for food grade output; off-colour technical acid raises carbon use and rejects.

Machinery for a sodium benzoate plant

The spray dryer is the costliest item in the sample at ₹124.57 lakh, about 30% of plant and machinery. Contact parts are stainless steel so that iron does not discolour the product.

Utilities and manpower

Steam and hot air for drying are the main energy users. In the sample, power and fuel cost ₹127.89 lakh in Year 3, about 6.6% of sales. The plant also needs a demineralised water unit, because hard water leaves haze and residue in the product.

Who buys sodium benzoate in India?

Sodium benzoate (E211) preserves acidic foods and drinks, where it works best below about pH 4.5. Use rises with summer beverage and squash production, and pickle and sauce makers buy through the year.

  • Soft drink, juice and squash manufacturers
  • Pickle, sauce, ketchup and jam makers
  • Pharmaceutical formulation companies making syrups
  • Cosmetic, toothpaste and mouthwash makers
  • Food ingredient and chemical distributors
  • Export buyers of food and pharma grades

Where a new unit wins: buyers pay for consistency, not just price. A plant that ships low-dust granules with batch test reports and steady lead times gets approved and stays on the list. One that competes only on price loses out when larger producers cut rates.

Mistakes that weaken a sodium benzoate project report

  • Pricing everything at pharma grade

Pharma grade sells higher but needs audits and months of approval. Revenue in the early years should rest mostly on food and technical grades.

  • Ignoring the benzoic acid spread

Benzoic acid is 82% of raw material cost in the sample. A report without a sensitivity test on acid price overstates how safe the DSCR is.

  • Assuming theoretical yield

Fines lost at the cyclone and bag filter, wet cake on filters and off-spec batches all cut saleable output below the 0.85 kg acid ratio.

  • Under-sizing steam and water

The spray dryer and DM water plant set the real utility load. Leaving them small caps output well below the rated capacity.

  • No room for buyer credit

Beverage and pharma buyers pay late. The sample allows 45 days of debtors; less than that leaves the cash credit limit short.

Sodium Benzoate project report: frequently asked questions

What is the cost of a sodium benzoate manufacturing plant in India?

Our sample report models a 5.9 MT per day plant at a total project cost of ₹845.81 lakh, with ₹415.25 lakh in plant and machinery and ₹190.64 lakh in buildings. The spray dryer is the largest machine. A smaller batch unit or a larger plant changes the cost a lot, so your project report prices it for your capacity, grade and site.

How much benzoic acid is needed to make 1 kg of sodium benzoate?

In theory about 0.85 kg of benzoic acid and 0.28 kg of caustic soda (100% basis) give 1 kg of sodium benzoate, with water as the by-product. Real plants need a little more to cover filter, dryer and bag filter losses. In our sample report, benzoic acid is 82% of raw material cost.

What is the sodium benzoate manufacturing process?

Benzoic acid is dissolved in hot demineralised water and neutralised with caustic soda lye to a pH of about 7.5 to 8.5. The solution is treated with activated carbon, filtered, spray dried to powder and partly compacted into granules. Each batch is tested for assay, moisture and heavy metals before packing in lined 25 kg bags.

Is sodium benzoate manufacturing profitable?

It can be, but margins are thin because benzoic acid drives most of the cost. In our illustrative sample, raw materials take 60.4% of sales, return on investment is 16% in Year 3 and break-even is at 45% of capacity. Profit depends mainly on the spread between benzoic acid prices and your selling price.

Which standard and approvals apply to a sodium benzoate plant?

IS 4447 is the Indian Standard for food grade sodium benzoate, and IS 4448:2022 covers food grade benzoic acid. The plant needs consent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board. If you sell food grade, check the FSSAI licence category on FoSCoS. Pharma buyers usually ask for IP, BP or USP test reports.

What should a sodium benzoate business plan include?

It should state the grades you will sell, the benzoic acid source and price, plant capacity, project cost, working capital and five years of projections with DSCR. Buyer approval time matters too, since beverage and pharma customers audit a new supplier before placing regular orders. A bank-format project report covers all of these points.

Is the sample report free and can I use it for a loan?

The sample is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report; its figures are representative and not based on a real project. It should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and lender.
