Adhesives and sealants surround us in nature and in our daily lives.Adhesive, or glue, is a mixture in a liquid or semi-liquid state that is capable of holding materials together by surface attachment.Adhesives may come from either natural or synthetic sources. A large and growing number of adhesives are available in the market.Adhesives and sealants are often considered together because they both adhere and seal; both must be resistant to their operating environments; and their properties are highly dependent on how they are applied and processed. Adhesives are thus chosen for their holding and bonding power. The industrial adhesives and sealants are developed to cater to the demanding application in the industry. The industrial adhesives include solvent based adhesives, water based adhesives, hot-melt adhesives, Anaerobic Adhesives, Ultraviolet Curing Adhesives, Structural Adhesives, Primers and Activators.
Adhesive were utilized in a sophisticated manner even in ancient times. Many factors have contributed to the growth of the adhesives industry. There is no end in sight to the new materials, new formulation, and new uses to which adhesives will be put in the future. Formulations generally are compounded to satisfy a special need or needs. Therefore, uniformity of neither product nor end use exists. While use of all adhesives has increased, the greatest gain has occurred in the synthetic resin category. The synthetic resin adhesive is the most important for packaging uses. Pressure-sensitive adhesive is a fast growing segment of the industry.
Last, but not least, is the consumer ‘‘do-it-yourself” market. This field includes products designed for the industrial trade but which can, by minor modification, be marketed through the hardware dealer and variety store. Adhesives for this growing market, range from the simplest glues and mucilages for furniture-making and repair, to metal-to-metal bonding for frame construction.
The areas of greatest potential growth, in the foreseeable future as in the recent past, are synthetic resins and modified starches. Compounding technology will remain an integral part of the industry, and the technologist will be aided by the industry and continuing emphasis of chemical companies in raw material product design in these broad areas.
