What is a glass sheet project report?
A glass sheet project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a float glass plant. The plant melts silica sand, soda ash and dolomite and forms the melt into flat sheet on molten tin. The report covers the process, machinery, raw materials, market, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even.
Promoters use it to size the float line and raise project finance; banks, financial institutions and equity investors use it to test whether the plant can carry its debt.
Also known as: float glass sheet project report, glass sheet business plan, project report on glass sheet, flat glass plant DPR, sheet glass manufacturing project report.
Glass sheet manufacturing plant cost in India
The sample report models a float line with a saleable output of 330 metric tonnes (MT) per day, or 1,17,150 MT a year, running 355 days a year. Utilisation starts at 60% and reaches 80% in Year 5, and glass is sold at ₹36,900 per MT before GST.
| Land and site development | 1,380.84 |
|---|---|
| Building and civil works | 5,028.85 |
| Plant and machinery | 19,019.87 |
| Other fixed assets | 1,458.82 |
| Contingencies | 1,202.44 |
| Preliminary and pre-operative | 702.27 |
| Working capital margin | 1,094.78 |
| Total | 29,887.87 |
| Promoter's contribution (25%) | 7,471.97 |
|---|---|
| Term loan from bank (75%) | 22,415.90 |
| Cash credit limit (separate) | 3,284.36 |
| Total project cost | 29,887.87 |
Scale check: the sample is a mid-size line. Newer Indian float lines are often 600–1,000 MT per day or more and cost more per tonne of capacity, indicatively ₹600–1,300 crore. Treat the sample as a format guide, not a budget.
Term loan at 10.5% with an 18-month moratorium and 84 monthly instalments. All figures are illustrative.
Glass sheet manufacturing process
Nearly all clear glass sheet is now made by the float process. The furnace and tin bath run without a break for years, so every step is designed for continuous output.
- Batch preparation
Sand, soda ash, dolomite, limestone and minor materials are weighed, mixed and blended with crushed cullet from the plant.
- Melting
A gas-fired regenerative furnace melts the batch at about 1,500 to 1,600 degrees Celsius; its checker chambers recover heat from the exhaust.
- Refining and conditioning
Bubbles rise out of the melt, and the glass is cooled to an even temperature so it flows at a steady rate.
- Float forming
Glass pours onto molten tin under a nitrogen and hydrogen atmosphere and spreads into a ribbon; top rollers stretch or hold it to set the thickness.
- Annealing
The ribbon passes through a lehr that cools it slowly, so the sheet can be cut without cracking.
- Inspection
An online scanner finds bubbles, stones and distortion and flags the faulty areas for cutting out.
- Cutting and stacking
The ribbon is scored and snapped into standard sizes; edge trim and rejects go back to the batch house as cullet.
- Packing
Sheets are interleaved with separating powder or paper and stacked on stillages to stop scratching and staining in transit.
Float line, rolled glass or processing: which glass sheet business?
"Glass sheet business" covers very different investments. Decide which one you mean before you commission a report.
| Float glass line | Melts its own glass and forms it on molten tin. Gives clear or tinted sheet with flat, fire-polished surfaces in a wide range of thicknesses. This is the plant modelled in our sample report. |
|---|---|
| Rolled or figured glass | Molten glass passes between rollers instead of floating on tin. Used for patterned glass and solar cover glass; the surface is not optically flat. |
| Drawn sheet glass | The older vertical drawing route. It gives more distortion and lower output than float and has largely been replaced by it. |
| Glass processing unit | Buys float sheet and cuts, toughens, laminates, coats or silvers it. Needs a fraction of the investment and suits MSME finance. |
Raw materials for glass sheet
Raw materials are 25% of sales in the sample, and soda ash alone is 58% of their cost. Sand must be washed and low in iron, because iron gives clear glass a green edge tint that processors reject.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Soda ash | 58% | 4,381.88 |
| Silica sand (low iron, washed) | 20% | 1,510.99 |
| Dolomite | 9% | 679.95 |
| Limestone and feldspar | 5% | 377.75 |
| Sodium sulphate and carbon | 4% | 302.20 |
| Colourants for tinted glass | 4% | 302.20 |
| Total | 100% | 7,554.97 |
Cullet made in the plant is recycled into the batch; it melts with less fuel and replaces part of the bought raw material.
Machinery for a float glass sheet plant
The furnace with its refractories is the largest single item in the sample, at about a third of plant and machinery cost. The tin bath comes next.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Batch house with silos, weighers, mixers and cullet return | Stores, weighs and mixes the batch | 2,092.19 |
| Regenerative float glass furnace with refractories | Melts and refines the glass | 6,086.36 |
| Tin bath with roof heaters and atmosphere control | Forms the flat ribbon | 2,662.78 |
| Annealing lehr | Cools the ribbon without stress | 1,521.59 |
| Cold end cutting, snapping and stacking line | Cuts sheets to size and stacks them | 1,901.99 |
| Nitrogen and hydrogen generation plant | Keeps the tin from oxidising | 1,141.19 |
| Gas firing and waste heat recovery system | Fires the furnace and reuses exhaust heat | 1,141.19 |
| Online defect scanner and quality laboratory | Finds faults and tests the glass | 760.79 |
| Electricals, compressors and cooling water system | Runs and cools the line | 1,711.79 |
| Total plant and machinery | 19,019.87 | |
Costs are the sample report's estimates. Float lines are bought from a few specialist technology suppliers, so get firm quotations early.
Fuel, power, gases and manpower for a float line
A float plant cannot be switched off at night, so utilities are sized for round-the-clock running with backup.
| Fuel and power | Natural gas or fuel oil fires the furnace continuously. Power and fuel are 22% of sales in the sample, ₹6,665.33 lakh in Year 3. |
|---|---|
| Electricity backup | The tin bath heaters and atmosphere plant need uninterrupted supply; a dedicated feeder and standby generation protect the tin and the ribbon. |
| Protective gases | Nitrogen with a small share of hydrogen fills the tin bath. Most plants make both on site. |
| Cooling water | Recirculated water cools furnace, tin bath and lehr equipment, with treatment to limit scaling. |
| Land and building | The line runs several hundred metres from batch house to warehouse. The sample takes ₹1,380.84 lakh for land and ₹5,028.85 lakh for buildings. |
| Manpower | 249 people in the sample, working in shifts: 37 in management and supervision, 87 skilled operators and 125 semi-skilled and unskilled workers. |
BIS licence and approvals for a glass sheet plant
| BIS certification (float glass) | Transparent Float Glass (Quality Control) Order, 2021, in force from 1 April 2022. Glass must meet IS 14900:2018 and carry the BIS mark, as of October 2026. |
|---|---|
| BIS factory testing | The BIS scheme tests thickness every two hours, plus size, squareness, optical and visual faults, cut-edge defects and light transmission. |
| Sheet glass by other routes | Flat transparent sheet glass to IS 2835 is covered by its own Quality Control Order. |
| Pollution board consent | Consent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board. "Manufacturing of glass" is Orange in the 2016 CPCB list (lead glass is Red); check the 2025 revised list with your state board. |
| Registration and safety | Company registration, GST, factory licence and fire NOC, which vary by state. |
Who buys glass sheet in India?
Most float glass goes into buildings: windows, facades, partitions, doors and interiors. A large share is sold to processors who toughen, laminate, coat or double-glaze it before it reaches a site, so processor clusters decide where freight is cheapest.
- Glass processors making toughened, laminated and insulated glass
- Glass dealers and distributors
- Mirror and furniture makers
- Facade and window fabricators
- Appliance and automotive glass makers
Sell every tonne: a float furnace produces the same tonnage every day whatever the market does. A plant needs a dealer and processor network ready before start-up, and storage for slow months.
Mistakes that weaken a glass sheet project report
- Selling melted tonnes instead of packed tonnes
Edge trim, faults and thickness changes all return as cullet. Revenue must be based on first-quality packed output, not furnace pull.
- One fuel price for five years
Fuel is the biggest cost after raw materials. A report should show profit and DSCR at higher gas or oil prices.
- No reserve for the furnace cold repair
At the end of each campaign the furnace is rebuilt and output stops for weeks. Lenders look for a fund or a plan to pay for it.
- Ignoring the start-up period
Heating a new furnace and stabilising the ribbon takes time, and early yields are low. Year 1 sales should reflect that.
- Pricing against protected imports only
Import duties and price floors on float glass are time-bound. Test the plant at import-parity prices without them.

Glass Sheet project report: frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to set up a glass sheet manufacturing plant in India?
A float glass sheet plant is a large industrial project. Our sample report models a 330 MT per day line at ₹29,888 lakh, including land, building, machinery and working capital margin. Newer lines of 600–1,000 MT per day are indicatively in the ₹600–1,300 crore range. Your project report works out the cost for your capacity, fuel and location.
What raw materials are used to make glass sheet?
Glass sheet is mostly silica sand, soda ash, dolomite and limestone, with small amounts of sodium sulphate, carbon and colourants for tinted glass. Crushed cullet from the plant is added back to the batch. In our sample report soda ash is 58% of raw material cost and silica sand 20%, so soda ash prices move profit more than any other input.
What is the float process for making glass sheet?
The batch is melted at about 1,500 to 1,600 degrees Celsius, refined, and poured onto a long bath of molten tin under nitrogen and hydrogen. The glass spreads into a flat ribbon with smooth surfaces on both sides, cools slowly in an annealing lehr, and is inspected, cut into sheets and packed. The line runs day and night.
Is a glass sheet plant profitable?
In our illustrative sample, a 330 MT per day float line earns a 14% return on investment in Year 3. It breaks even at 42% of capacity, pays back in about 4.4 years and has an average DSCR of 2.21. Real results depend on fuel price, the share of first-quality output, freight to buyers and the price of imported glass.
Which BIS standard applies to float glass sheet?
Transparent float glass must meet IS 14900:2018 and carry the BIS mark under the Transparent Float Glass (Quality Control) Order, 2021, which came into force on 1 April 2022. BIS tests include thickness, length and width, squareness, optical and visual faults, defects on cut edges and light transmission. Confirm the current order with BIS before you finalise the plant.
Can a small unit make glass sheet?
Making glass sheet from sand needs a continuous float furnace, which is far beyond the budget of a small unit or a small business loan. Smaller investors usually start by processing bought float sheet into toughened, laminated or insulated glass, or mirrors. NPCS prepares separate project reports for those units, sized for an MSME term loan.
Is the glass sheet project report PDF free, and can I use it for a loan?
The sample PDF is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so do not submit it to a bank. For project finance, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, site and lenders.
