What is a betel nut supari processing project report?
A betel nut supari processing project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that buys dried arecanut and dehusks, grades, cuts, dries and packs it as supari. It sets out the process, machinery, nut buying, market, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a bank or subsidy office checks.
Growers, traders and new entrepreneurs use it to size a supari unit and apply for a loan or subsidy; lenders use it to judge whether the unit can repay.
Also known as: arecanut processing project report, project report on supari processing, supari making business plan, supari cutting unit DPR.
What a bank checks in a supari processing project
Supari processing earns a thin margin on an expensive raw material, so lenders look hardest at nut cost, selling price and the cash tied up in stock. These are the values in our sample report and the reason each one matters.
Dried nut is the cost that decides profit. In the sample, a 5% rise in nut cost with no change in price takes about ₹47 lakh off Year 3 profit before tax of ₹110.80 lakh.
Banks compare it with market rates for chali and red nut. It has to match your real mix of pouch sales, bulk bags and lower grades, not the best grade alone.
The debt service coverage ratio is cash available for loan payments divided by those payments. The sample's lowest year is 1.89, in Year 2, when full instalments begin.
Traders and distributors expect credit. Debtors, 15 days of nut stock and 10 days of packed goods together set the ₹77.86 lakh cash credit limit.
Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your capacity, suppliers and market.

Betel nut supari processing: manufacturing process
Most units buy nuts that growers have already dried: white chali from ripe nuts, or red nut from tender nuts that were boiled and sun-dried. The unit then turns them into clean, graded, cut supari in six stages.
- Receiving and moisture testing
Each lot is checked with a moisture meter and inspected for mould and insect damage. Damp lots lose weight in store and can breach the FSSAI moisture limit of 7%.
- Dehusking and cleaning
A dehusking machine strips the dry husk from whole chali, and a destoner removes fibre, dust and stones.
- Grading
Kernels are sorted by size, colour and hardness on vibrating sieves, then by hand. Grades such as Bilegotu and Chalikempu in chali, and Api, Bette and Rashi in red nut, fetch very different prices.
- Cutting
A supari cutting machine slices graded kernels to the piece size buyers ask for. The blade setting decides how much fine powder is lost.
- Drying and roasting
Cut pieces pass through a hot air tray dryer to bring moisture below 7%, then get a short roast in a drum roaster for crispness.
- Packing and storage
Pieces are weighed into laminated pouches or lined bags with batch and date labels. Bulk stock held for months is fumigated against storage pests.
Raw materials: chali and red arecanut
Two kinds of dried nut make up almost all the raw material cost. Chali comes from fully ripe nuts; red nut, or kalipak, comes from tender green nuts that are boiled and coated with their concentrated boiling extract for a glossy finish.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Dried white arecanut (chali) | 72% | 679.99 |
| Red arecanut (kalipak or rashi) | 25% | 236.11 |
| Food-grade processing aids | 3% | 28.33 |
| Total | 100% | 944.43 |
Packing material is costed separately and comes to 8.6% of sales in the sample.
Machinery for a supari processing unit
The supari cutting machine is the largest single item in our sample, followed by the pouch packing machine and the hot air dryer.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Arecanut dehusking machine | Strips dry husk from whole nuts | 17.37 |
| Destoner and vibrating cleaner | Removes fibre, dust and stones | 14.48 |
| Vibrating sieve grader | Sorts kernels by size | 11.58 |
| Supari cutting machine | Slices kernels to set piece size | 28.96 |
| Hot air tray dryer | Brings moisture below the FSSAI limit | 20.27 |
| Rotary drum roaster | Gives cut pieces a light roast | 14.48 |
| Automatic pouch packing machine | Weighs and seals retail packs | 23.17 |
| Moisture meter and quality lab equipment | Tests every incoming and outgoing lot | 5.79 |
| Weighing scales, conveyors and storage racks | Moves and stores stock | 8.69 |
| Total plant and machinery | 144.79 | |

Betel nut business: market and buyers in India
Karnataka grows most of India's arecanut, with Kerala and Assam next, while much of the chewing demand sits in northern and western states. Processors earn in that gap: they buy in growing districts, grade and cut the nut, and sell to traders and suppliers far from the farms.
Supari is also used in puja and wedding rituals, which keeps a steady market for whole, well-shaped nuts alongside cut supari.
- Wholesale supari traders and commission agents
- Pan shops and kirana stores
- Mukhwas and mouth freshener makers
- Distributors in northern and western states
- Puja and ceremonial goods sellers
Where a new unit wins: grading. Over-matured nut sells at roughly a quarter to a sixth of the normal rate. A unit that sorts carefully and sells each grade to the right buyer keeps margin that a careless one gives away.
Licences, FSSAI rules and GST for supari processing
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) registration and GST registration |
|---|---|
| FSSAI licence | A unit making more than 100 kg a day needs an FSSAI licence rather than basic registration; whether it is a state or central licence depends on capacity, so check the criteria on FoSCoS |
| Moisture standard | FSSAI limits arecanut moisture to 7%. ICAR-CPCRI found about 11% safe for dry storage, but the government told the Lok Sabha in December 2024 that no change to the limit was under consideration |
| GST | Dried areca nuts (HSN 0802 80) attract 5% GST under the rate schedule in force from 22 September 2025 |
| Pollution board consent | Consent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board; the category is set by the state board |
Rules checked in October 2026. Confirm the moisture limit and licence category with FSSAI before you size the dryer.
Loans and subsidy for a supari processing unit
PMFME
35% subsidy, up to ₹10 lakhCredit-linked capital subsidy for micro food processing units, with at least 10% own contribution. The scheme period ran to 2025-26, so confirm it is open for new applications.
PMEGP
Manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakhSubsidy of 15–35% of project cost. The negative list bars intoxicant items such as pan, so confirm with the DIC or KVIC office that supari qualifies.
MSME term loan with CGTMSE
Mid-size and larger unitsCollateral-free guarantee cover for eligible micro and small enterprises. The sample unit takes a ₹211 lakh term loan.
Scheme terms change. Confirm current terms with the bank or the scheme portal before applying.
Mistakes that weaken a supari processing project report
- Pricing all output at the pouch rate
Low grades, broken pieces and powder sell for far less. Revenue should be built grade by grade.
- No allowance for grading and cutting loss
Husk, dust, broken kernels and fines reduce saleable weight; leaving them out overstates output.
- Buying without a moisture test
Damp nuts lose weight in store, grow mould and can fail an FSSAI sample against the 7% limit.
- Working capital sized for steady buying
Fresh nut reaches market mainly after the winter harvest. Stocking up then needs a bigger cash credit limit than the 15 days in our sample.
- Counting on a subsidy before eligibility is confirmed
Check PMEGP's negative list and PMFME's rules for supari first, and make sure the plan still works without the subsidy.

Betel Nut Supari Processing project report: frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to start a supari processing unit?
A small cutting and packing unit needs roughly ₹20–45 lakh, and a 400–700 kg per day grading and cutting unit about ₹1.3–2.3 crore. Our sample report models a 920 kg per day unit at ₹281 lakh. These are indicative figures. Dried nut stock is the hidden cost, so working capital often decides how much money you really need.
What is the difference between chali and red supari?
Chali, or white supari, is made from fully ripe nuts that are sun-dried for weeks. Red supari, or kalipak, is made from tender green nuts that are boiled, coated with their own boiling extract and dried. Each is sold in its own trade grades at very different prices, so a sound project report costs and prices them separately.
Which machines are needed for supari processing?
A typical unit uses an arecanut dehusking machine, a destoner, a sieve grader and a supari cutting machine. It also needs a hot air tray dryer, a drum roaster, a pouch packing machine and a moisture meter. In our sample the cutting machine is the largest single item at ₹28.96 lakh, out of ₹144.79 lakh for all machinery.
Is betel nut supari processing profitable?
In our illustrative sample, a 920 kg per day unit earns a 29% return on investment in Year 3. It breaks even at 48% of capacity and pays back in about 3 years. Margins are thin, though. Raw nut is 61.2% of sales, so buying price and grading skill decide profit more than the machinery does.
Can I get a PMEGP or PMFME loan for a supari unit?
Possibly, but check eligibility first. PMFME offers a 35% credit-linked subsidy of up to ₹10 lakh for micro food processing units. PMEGP covers manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh, but its negative list excludes intoxicant items such as pan. Ask the District Industries Centre or KVIC office whether supari processing qualifies.
Supari ka business kaise shuru kare?
First decide what you will sell: graded nut in bulk bags, cut supari in pouches, or both. Then fix the capacity, line up a steady source of dried nut, and get Udyam, GST and an FSSAI licence. Buy a cutting machine, dryer and moisture meter, and prepare a project report to apply for a bank loan or scheme subsidy.
Is the sample project report PDF free, and can I use it for a loan?
Yes, the sample is free to open and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS project report. Its figures are representative and not taken from a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and scheme.
