Best Business Opportunities in Nepal - Identification and Selection of right Project, Thrust areas for Investment, Industry Startup and Entrepreneurship Projects

Nepal encourages foreign investment both as joint venture operations with Nepalese investors or as 100 per cent foreign-owned enterprises. The few sectors that are not open to foreign investment are either reserved for national entrepreneurs in order to promote small local enterprises and protect indigenous skills and expertise or are restricted for national security reasons. Nepal is close to India and China which will have the largest surge in the middle class population in the history of the world. As families become smaller and wealthier, they will start eating well. Meat consumption will rise. It will take more agricultural resources to produce more meat. Buying shares in tourism-related stocks such as hotels, airlines or restaurants is a passive way to tap this potential. You can also open a resort or travel agency in anticipation of the boom. Nepal's exports of mainly carpets, clothing, hemp, leather goods, jute goods and grain

For the past few decades, the major investment opportunities have emerged sure to give us a proper financial result (i.e, collection of the investment and generation of profit from the invested capital) are Hydro-electricity generation, Tourism and Agriculture. Even though there are other sectors and opportunities to invest time, capital and labour in, these three are the most effective and productive in the long run.

Business Sectors

Agriculture Industry

Agriculture employs 76% of the workforce, services 18% and manufacturing and craft-based industry 6%. Agricultural produce – mostly grown in the Terai region bordering India – includes tea, rice, corn, wheat, sugarcane, root crops, milk, and water buffalo meat. Industry mainly involves the processing of agricultural produce, including jute, sugarcane, tobacco, and grain. In trying to increase agricultural production and diversify the agricultural base, the government focused on irrigation, the use of fertilizers and insecticides, the introduction of new implements and new seeds of high-yield varieties, and the provision of credit. Although new agricultural technologies helped increase food production, there still was room for further growth. Past experience indicated bottlenecks, however, in using modern technology to achieve a healthy growth.

Government efforts to boost the agricultural economy have focused on easing dependence on weather conditions, increasing productivity, and diversifying the range of crops for local consumption, export, and industrial inputs. Solutions have included the deployment of irrigation, chemical fertilizers, and improved seed varieties, together with credit provision, technical advice, and limited mechanization.

Agriculture provides agricultural raw materials to the industries and industries produce manufactured or finished products from those raw materials. Thus, we have seen that without agricultural raw materials, agro-based industries cannot run. The development of agro-based industries depends upon the availability of agricultural raw materials.

There may be investment opportunities in:

  • Dall Mill (Split Dalls/ Pulses for Chhilke-wali Moong, Urad, Arhar, Channa, Masoor)
  • Poha (Rice Flakes)
  • Atta, Maida Suji & Wheat Bran (Wheat Flour Plant) Roller Flour Mill
  • Rice Powder, Puttu and Wheat Powder
  • Biscuits & Candy

Hydropower Sector

The perennial nature of rivers and the steep gradient of the country's topography provide ideal conditions for the development of hydropower. Most of the power plants are run-of-river type with energy available in excess of the in-country demand during the monsoon season and deficit during the dry season. Nepal has a huge hydropower potential. Nepal's electricity generation is dominated by hydropower, though in the entire scenario of energy use of the country, the electricity is a tiny fraction, only 1% energy need is fulfilled by electricity. The bulk of the energy need is dominated by fuel wood (68%), agricultural waste (15%), animal dung (8%) and imported fossil fuel (8%). The other fact is that only about 40% of Nepal's population has access to electricity. With this scenario and having immense potential of hydropower development, it is important for Nepal to increase its energy dependency on electricity with hydropower development.

Much of the new hydropower capacity in Nepal will be built with a view to export electricity to meet growing demand for electricity in northern India, offsetting greenhouse-gas emissions by reducing the proportion of coal-burning stations in the electricity portfolio.

Mine and Mineral Industry

Minerals are the nonrenewable natural resources. Sustainable development of such resources helps to strengthen the national economy. Nepal is an underdeveloped country with vast natural resources such as water, minerals, forest, varieties of agricultural products and medical herbs. For the economic development of the country exploitation and proper use of such valuable resources, especially mineral resources, is extremely important. Small scale historical iron, copper, lead, zinc, cobalt, nickel mines and placer gold panning in the major rivers and many slate, quartzite, dolomite and limestone quarries were operational in many districts. Old working pits, audits, smelting places, scattered slag and remnant of mine materials stand as solid proofs of such mining activities in the past.

Limestone is by far the most important mineral resource in Nepal, followed by magnesite, lead and zinc, and marble. Limestone was mined for the production of cement and lime, as well as for construction materials. The mining sector, comprising numerous small-scale industrial minerals mining companies, was the smallest sector of Nepal’s economy.

All these indicate that Nepal is potential for metallic minerals but most of them are sub-economic to none economic prospect/ deposits.

VERMICOMPOST FROM SOLVENT EXTRACTED SPICE WASTE - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities

Vermicompost is the product or process of composting utilizing various species of worms, usually red wigglers, white worms, and earthworms to create a heterogeneous mixture of decomposing vegetable or food waste, bedding materials, and vermicast. Vermicast, similarly known as worm castings, worm humus or worm manure, is the end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by a species of earthworm. Containing water-soluble nutrients, vermicompost is an excellent, nutrient rich organic fertilizer and soil conditioner. The process of producing vermicompost is called vermicomposting. In addition to much faster decomposition rates, there are several other reasons that make vermicomposting a preferable method over standard methods. With vermicomposting, there is little to no need of aeration or turning unlike conventional methods. The end product of vermicomposting has greater soluble nutrient levels as well as higher microbial populations when compared to traditional methods. On an industrial scale, vermicomposting has been practiced as an in-situ soil remediation process whereby worms mine heavy metals from the soil or treat hydrocarbon contamination. Additionally, vermicomposting has been effective at treating municipal bio-solids and wastewater as well being capable of processing animal manures and other by-products from paper, distillery, and others. Vermicompost, like conventional compost, provides many benefits to agricultural soil, including increased ability to retain moisture, better nutrient holding capacity, better soil structure, and higher levels of microbial activity. A search of the literature, however, indicates that vermicompost may be superior to conventional aerobic compost in a number of areas. There is very wide scope and good market potential of the product due to growth of organic farming.

CHROMITE BENEFICIATION PLANT - Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Cost and Revenue

Chromite is an oxide of chromium and iron. The chemical composition of chromite is FeO.Cr2O3 or FeCr2O4. Chromite is the only commercial source of chromium. It occurs as a primary mineral of ultrabasic igneous rocks and is normally associated with peridotite, pyroxenite, dunite and serpentinite. World-wide, high-alumina chromite, largely from podiform deposits is used in refractory applications while iron-rich ores, largely from stratiform deposits are utilised in metallurgical and chemical applications. Chromite is an early magmatic oxide mineral. It forms ore bodies by crystallization and segregation. The chromite ore bodies are hosted invariably by the early magmatic silicate rock peridotite, pyroxenite and less commonly by anorthosite. In metallurgy, chromite is used in the manufacture of chromium metal and various alloys with iron, nickel, cobalt, tungsten, molybdenum, etc. Chromium imparts additional strength, hardness and toughness to its alloys. Chromite is used in refractory industry because of its resistance to corrosion, high temperature and ability to withstand sudden temperature changes, and its chemically neutral character. The ore is used in the form of lumps, bricks or cement in linings, specially of steel furnaces. Chromite is used for manufacturing important chromium compounds like chromates and bichromates of sodium and potassium, chromium pigments like chromic oxide green and chromic acid which, in turn, are used in chromium-plating solution. The number of reporting mines was 21 in both the years. Six principal producers operating 12 mines together accounted for 90% of the total production during the year. There is very good scope in this sector and new entrepreneur should venture into this field.

SECTOR PROFILE Floriculture, or flower farming, is a discipline of horticulture concerned with the cultivation of flowering and ornamental plants for gardens and for floristry, comprising the floral industry. The development, via plant breeding, of new varieties is a major occupation of floriculturists. Flowers are symbol of beauty, love, affection, etc. Besides their aesthetic value, they are important for their economic uses, such as for cut blooms and for extracting perfumes and other products. In our country, flowers are sanctified and are commonly used in worshipping the deities in our homes and temples. Rose is queen of flowers, it come from the latin word Rosa hybrid (family: Rosaceae). There are several thousand, varieties of roses and several hundred new ones are being added every year. The choice of Varieties depends mainly on the climate and the soil of the growing region for cut flowers, exhibition, garden display etc. and on personal or family preferences. There are following few varieties of Roses are commonly available in the market. The production of cut flowers is specifically known as the cut flower industry. Farming flowers and foliage employs special aspects of floriculture, such as spacing, training and pruning plants for optimal flower harvest; and post harvest treatment such as chemical treatments, storage, preservation and packaging. In Australia and the United States some species are harvested from the wild for the cut flower market. Applications • The rose is used for purposes of decoration during festivals, and for personal adornment. • The flowers are strong into garlands and offered in temples. • During roughly to 60-70 per cent total production in the country is used for the production of rose water. • Smaller quantities are consumed in preparing altars, gulkand and hair oils. • A part of the crop of Edward roses is used for the production of rose water • Used for the production of method altars and hair oils. Global demand World trade in cut flowers: about 14.1 billion per annum Commercial floriculture however is of recent origin. A constituent increase in demand for cut and potted flowers has made floriculture as one of the important commercial trades in Indian agriculture. Emphasis has been shifting from traditional flowers to cut flowers for export purposes. India is a leading grower of roses. Karnataka continues to be the leader, accounting forever 50 % of the natural rose production. Bangalore has around 35 floriculture units producing roses. Floriculture has an annual growth potential of 25 to 30 %. Of late, large scale commercial companies have started joint ventures with foreign companies to invest in the floriculture sector. The government has invited foreign investment in floriculture, particularly in the areas of refrigerated storage and transportation facilities essential to ensure that flowers do not perish to transit. Of course, the flower exporters want an increase in airfreight subsidy and lower rates for electricity. Floriculture is capable of attracting/retaining a large number of progressive rural populations on in farming. India's share of the global floriculture market is around $60 million, which is only 0.3 percent. The Rs.3000 million floriculture industry of India has 60 units across the country. India's floriculture industry is of recent origin. Currently around 210 hectares are under floriculture cultivation, with a capacity to produce around 300 million stems of flowers. Indian flowers can match the best in the world. Of course the performance of the floriculture sector has been better in recent years. Exports rose from Rs 810 million in 1997-98 to Rs 1326 million in 2000-01. India's exports of floriculture products is valued at Rs.1140 lakhs mostly directed to Middle East, USA & U.K. Presently, the cultivation of modern cut flowers is limited. A whole new crop of entrepreneurs and a host of big business houses are determined to find a fortune in flowers and are swarming like bees to the honey pot called the global market in floriculture. As the demands of cut rose floriculture is splendid in future, it is one of the imperative fields to endeavour.
