Best Business Opportunities in Bhutan - Identification and Selection of right Project, Thrust areas for Investment, Industry Startup and Entrepreneurship Projects

The economy of Bhutan, one of the world's smallest and least developed countries, is based on agriculture and forestry, which provide the main livelihood for more than 60% of the population. Agriculture consists largely of subsistence farming and animal husbandry. The economy is closely aligned with India's through strong trade and monetary links and dependence on India's financial assistance. Most production in the industrial sector is of the cottage industry type. Most development projects, such as road construction, rely on Indian migrant labour. Model education, social, and environment programs are underway with support from multilateral development organisations.

The industrial sector is in a nascent stage, and though most production comes from cottage industry, larger industries are being encouraged and some industries such as cement, steel, and ferroalloy have been set up. Most development projects, such as road construction, rely on Indian contract labour. Agricultural produce includes rice, chilies, dairy (some yak, mostly cow) products, buckwheat, barley, root crops, apples, and citrus and maize at lower elevations. Industries include cement, wood products, processed fruits, alcoholic beverages and calcium carbide.

Bhutan’s hydropower industry accounts for 32% of the nation’s economy. The dependency on a single sector is a potential risk factor, the report states. As an alternative revenue generation sector, the government is promoting tourism, which also hopes to generate employment. Like in most countries, the Cottage and Small Industry (CSI) play a pivotal role in the overall industrial economy of Bhutan.

Business Sectors

Agriculture Industry

Agriculture in Bhutan has a dominant role in the Bhutan's economy. Approximately 80% of the population of Bhutan are involved in agriculture. Over 95% of the earning women in the country work in the agricultural sector. Majority of the refugees in this Himalayan nation are also employed in the agricultural sector. Agriculture in Bhutan is characterized by its labor-intensive nature with relatively low intensity of farm inputs.

Major crops cultivated in Bhutan are maize and rice. Maize accounts for 49% of total domestic cereal cultivation, and rice accounts for 43%. Rice is the major staple crop. Agriculture in the country includes cultivation of wheat and other minor cereal crops. Paddy is the primary crop in those regions where proper irrigation is available. Apart from paddy, other crops like wheat, barley, oil seeds, potato and different vegetables are also cultivated in these lands. The primary goals of agriculture in Bhutan are to raise the per capita income of the people living in rural areas, to enhance self-sufficiency in staple crops, and to increase the productivity per unit of farm labor and agricultural land.

Minerals and Mining

The country’s mineral industry was small and insignificant to its economy and was dominated by the production of cement, coal, dolomite, gypsum, and limestone. Known resources included deposits of beryl, copper, graphite, lead, mica, pyrite, tin, tungsten, and zinc. Mining is one of the fastest growing industries in Bhutan generating average revenue of 54 million U.S. dollars or contributing 3 percent to country's GDP.

Industrial mineral products were the primary output of Bhutan’s mineral industry and included dolomite, graphite, marble and slate, and sand and stone. The production of a variety of stone materials and energy fuels had been increasing steadily in recent years and corresponded to the increased demand for these commodities in the construction sector. While major exports of minerals are made in raw form, Bhutan processes some of its minerals into value-added products such as calcium carbide, cement, and ferrosilicon.

Accordingly, Bhutan’s policies on mining and quarrying consider inter-generational equity. This is important since minerals constitute vital raw materials for the mineral based manufacturing industries and are a major resource for economic development of a country. Bhutan is endowed with rich mineral resources that has allowed for the sustainable growth of a mineral based industry and export base. This mineral resource exploitation and value addition has helped generate employment and can contribute towards poverty alleviation.

Livestock Industry

Livestock farming practices continue to evolve in response to rapid modernization and growing economic opportunities in the Bhutan Himalaya. Animal husbandry is an integral part of farming activities in Bhutan and, especially in the high altitude or alpine regions, animal husbandry forms virtually the sole economic activity. The consumption of animal products is an important element of the Bhutanese diet.

Livestock is an integral part in all Bhutanese farming systems. While most households rear livestock for home consumption, livestock farming and nomadic herding are the predominant activities in the alpine and cool temperate zones. Over 80 per cent of rural households own cattle. Other significant livestock include poultry (reared by about 65% of rural households), pigs (38%), horses (23%), goats (15%) and yaks (2%). Inadequate pasture land and poor access to markets are significant constraints to improving production, but increasing urban demand for livestock products is encouraging farmers near urban areas to keep better breeds and improve feed and fodder management. In the livestock sector artificial insemination covers not only Jersey breeds that are high yielding but also for the production of Jatsa and Jatsam that are local high yielding varieties.

The indigenous cattle are the most important livestock genetic resources for food, animal energy and household income in Bhutan. Poultry farming is one of the important livestock farming components in Bhutan.

Tyre Retreading Business

Tyre Retreading Business. Retread Tire. Start an Automobile Tyre Retreading Industry Retreading tires is the process of restoring old tires so that they can be used in automobiles. The process is technology-driven where the worn-out and damaged threads are replaced with new treads. Tyre retreading can be done using 2 methods – cold process and hot process. Currently in India retreading is done 50% by the organized sector and the remaining 50% by the unorganized sector. Tyre Retreading is a new technology. After applying this method the old tyres become serviceable and usable. The part of the tyre that comes in contact with the surface of the road is known as the tread. The tread is an integral part of the tyre and is responsible for providing traction. New treads are available in the market. In brief, in can be put on an old tyre and cured with the help of steam. Similar to the new tyres, the treated tyres can be very well used on all vehicles, irrespective of light or heavy vehicles. With a safe and new technology, which is being adopted nowadays, it will be more easy and economical to produce tyres. Recently a new technology has been developed called “Precured Tread Rubber Retreading Process” which is commonly known as “Cold Process Retreading”. As in most parts of the world, tyre retreading in India is done extensively for commercial vehicles such as trucks and busses. The primary reason for retreading tyres is to save operational costs as applying a new tread can be done at less than half the cost of a new tyre. With further growth of the economy, there will be an increased numbers of vehicles in transport as well as passenger vehicles and hence more tyres will be required. Hence, there is a very wide scope for retread tyres as an original replacement. The retreading tyre industry for the commercial vehicle segment is poised for growth in India, fuelled by the increase in the number of vehicles, rising tyre costs, the advent of radial tyres, better roads and the introduction of multi-axle heavy duty vehicles. Advantages of Retreading of tyre: There are several advanges of retreading such as: • Retreads are quite safe and are being used in all kind of vehicles nowadays. May it be taxis or trucks, school buses or military vehicles, retreading is being used in all of them. • Retreading is highly environment friendly. When the existing tyres are made ready for further use, the manufactures save landfill space. Also, it reduces carbon dioxide emmission and saves millions of gallons of oil which is required to manufacture new tyres. • There are many economic benefits of retreading as the retreaded tyres are less pricey in comparision with the new ones. This definitely helps to save a considerable amount of money. • Retread process is not responsible for spreading large chunks of rubber on the roads and highways. It happens due to abuses like tyre failure, caused by road hazards, tyre blasts and overloading to both new tyres and retread ones. • They cost almost 30 – 50 % less than the price of a new tire. • It is a low-cost production process – for making the new tires 80% natural rubber is used whereas for retreading only 25% of natural rubber is consumed. • Properly retreaded tires have almost the same life as the new tires. • The investment is comparatively less. The major part of the investment is involved in buying expensive machinery and molds • Retreading extends the life of used tires thus making the entire process of tire making recyclable. Market Outlook Retreading tires is the process of restoring old tires so that they can be used in automobiles. The process is technology-driven where the worn-out and damaged threads are replaced with new treads. Tyre retreading can be done using 2 methods – cold process and hot process. Currently in India retreading is done 50% by the organized sector and the remaining 50% by the unorganized sector. India’s retreading industry is estimated to be worth more than US$ 1 billion (INR 5,000 crore annually) with roughly 20,000 retreaders scattered in the organised and unorganised sector. Retread tire market is forecast to grow from $ 9.6 billion in 2017 to more than $ 11.5 billion by 2023 globally. Though the market witnessed a slight decline during 2013-2017, owing to growing penetration of cheaper Chinese tire, retread tire sales are expected to recover in the coming years backed by growing consumer acceptance of retread tires and rising prices of new tires. Moreover, growing sales of commercial vehicles on account of rising infrastructure development and construction activities across the globe is further anticipated to push demand for retread tires, globally. Additionally, retread tire market is anticipated to be positively influenced by increasing number of technological advancements during the forecast period. The global retread tires market can be segmented on the basis of vehicle type into passenger car, light commercial vehicle, heavy commercial vehicle and off road vehicle. On the basis of vehicle type, the heavy commercial vehicle segment is anticipated to continue to dominate the global market in terms of value over the forecast period. The demand for retread tires in heavy commercial vehicles is estimated to grow at a relatively high CAGR as compared to other vehicle types over the forecast period. This segment is expected to represent a total incremental opportunity of US$ 2,228.1 Mn between 2018 and 2028. The global retread tires market remains positive and the market value is expected to increase at a CAGR of 4.6% during the forecast period (2018 - 2028). Among the end use segments of the retread tires market, the heavy commercial vehicles segment is expected to expand with a significant CAGR in terms of value as well as volume over the forecast period. Automotive production is expected to be higher in emerging economies as compared to that in developed economies. This can mainly be attributed to increasing urbanization and stable economic conditions in these regions. During the forecast period, the fleet on road is also expected to rise with a modest CAGR, thereby providing marginal opportunities for the growth of the retread tires market over the forecast period. Continuously growing vehicle PARC is another major factor which will increase the demand for replacement of tires and thus, will drive the demand for retread tires. Large fleet owners of commercial vehicles prefer tire remolding to ensure cost effectiveness. Hence, growth in automobile, forestry and construction is expected to create healthy growth opportunities for the retread tires market. Some of the major players operating in retread tire market worlwide are Elgi Rubber Company Limited, INDAG RUBBER LIMITED, MRF PRETREADS, Vipal Borrachas, Marangoni S.p.A., Bridgestone Bandag, LLC, Michelin Retread Technologies, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Midas Rubber India Private Limited and Sun Tyre Industries. Biodiesel is used in diesel engines, and is thus different from the waste and vegetable oils used to fuel converted diesel engines. Blends of biodiesel are also used as heating oil in space heating applications. Biodiesel is oil from plants or animals used as an alternative to or blended with petroleum diesel in automobiles and industrial fleets with diesel engines. Easy to Use One of the great advantages of biodiesel is that it can be used in existing engines, vehicles and infrastructure with practically no changes. Biodiesel can be pumped, stored and burned just like petroleum diesel fuel, and can be used pure, or in blends with petroleum diesel fuel in any proportion. Power and fuel economy using biodiesel is practically identical to petroleum diesel fuel, and year round operation can be achieved by blending with diesel fuel. Blending and Switching with Diesel Fuel Biodiesel can be used 100% (B100) or in blends with petroleum diesel fuel. When biodiesel is first used in a vehicle, it may release fuel tank deposits which can lead to fuel filter plugging. After this initial period, a user can switch between biodiesel and petroleum diesel whenever needed or desired, without modification. Biodiesel as a transportation fuel Most of the trucks, buses, and tractors in the United States use diesel fuel. Diesel fuel is a nonrenewable fuel made from petroleum. Biodiesel is a renewable fuel that is made from vegetable oils, grease, and animal fats. Using biodiesel fuel produces less pollution than using petroleum diesel fuel. Any vehicle that operates on diesel fuel can use biodiesel. Advantages of Biodiesel as Fuel • 75% cleaner than conventional diesel fuel. • Reduces unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate matter in exhaust fumes. • Contains no sulphur. • Emissions are nearly 50% less than conventional diesel fuel. • Doesn’t cause eye irritation • More biodegradable than sugar and less toxic than table salt. • Fuel economy is the same as conventional diesel fuel. • Much better lubricant than conventional diesel fuel and extends engine life • High cetane rating, which improves engine performance. • 1% biodiesel will increase lubricity by 65% • Biodiesel can be produced from any fat or vegetable oil, including waste cooking oil. Market Outlook The global biodiesel market is expected to reach USD 54.8 billion by 2025. The key factors for the growth of this market are minimizing storage issues with stability and transportation issues with high cost of delivered fuel compared to fossil fuels; it can reduce the ecological problems such as global warming, greenhouse effect and pollution. The growth in the global biodiesel market can be attributed to the proactive implementation of biofuel policies in various nations including US, Argentina, Brazil, and Indonesia. The regulations regarding the formulation of fuel in these regions are expected to increase the share of biodiesel, thereby increasing the demand. The global biodiesel market is slated for a huge growth in the next few years, not only because of the growing environmental concerns, but also because of the surging prices for non-renewable sources of energy, such as petroleum. Governments are enhancing the use of biodiesel across the globe and many countries have initiated merging of conventional diesel with a percentage of biodiesel. In biodiesel market by verticals, biodiesel is used as a fuel in many verticals including automobile, marine, railway, and agriculture industries, in pure form B100' or by forming blends with conventional petroleum diesel. These blends are B2', B5' and B20', which include 2%, 5%, and 20% biodiesel, respectively. Biodiesel has a higher lubricity (50:1) than that of traditional petroleum diesel. This belonging of biodiesel encourages its use in the vehicle enterprise as it reduces wear and tear of the engine. The excessive cetane value of biodiesel additionally maximizes engine life by way of ensuring entire gasoline combustion and leaving no residue. Biodiesel is used in the marine industry also as it is a good material as a shipping fuel, being biodegradable, non-toxic and essentially free of sulphur and aromatics. The biodiesel market has been segmented based on the feedstock used for products such as vegetable oils, animal fats, biomass, and others (brown grease/ trap grease); and verticals such as automotive, aviation, industrial, marine, residential & commercial heating, power generation, and agriculture. Biodiesel contains no petroleum products, but it is compatible with conventional diesel and can be blended in any proportion with mineral diesel to create a stable biodiesel mix. Biodiesel is eco-friendly, non-toxic and basically free from sulfur; it is renewable and can be produced from plant resources and agriculture. Biodiesel is an alternative fuel, which has a correlation with sustainable development, environmental preservation, energy conservation, efficiency and management. Growth in food industry driving the production of feed stock made from residue of soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil and animal fats enabling the handiness of feed stock required for production of biodiesel which in turn is fueling the production of biodiesel over the forecast period. Moreover, favorable regulatory support for mandatorily blending of biodiesel in diesel fuel is projected to fuel the consumption of biodiesel. However, raw material availability and high cost of installation of biodiesel production plant are factors expected to hamper the growth of biodiesel market during the forecast period. Some of the major competitors of the global biodiesel market are Poet, Llc, Archer Daniels Midland Company, Flint Hills Resources LP, The Andersons, Inc., Raizen, Copersucar, and Abengoa. Other developing economies like Europe, China, Russia, and India are also experiencing steady development and are expected to show an increase in stability in near future. Emerging Biofuel Market in India Bio-diesel production is in rise day-by-day basis in India as well as foreign countries. The major reason behind the phenomena is the limited amount of petroleum product reservoirs. The Indian biofuel market has been consistently witnessing growth and developments for past few years. The Government of India is injecting huge amount of money and resources into the development of this sector in an attempt to reduce dependency on imported oil. High volatile oil prices and production levels have further enlightened the need for continuous developments of this sector. The Indian biofuel sector is expected to see robust growth in coming years. Currently, ethanol dominates the Indian biofuel sector, but biodiesel will soon join the commercial stream as the phase one of pilot projects has already been completed. Being at the initial stage, but with huge potential in terms of production, the Indian biofuel industry will prove to be a good option for biofuel producers.
