What is a acetates project report?
An acetates project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a plant that makes acetate esters, such as ethyl or butyl acetate, from acetic acid and an alcohol. It sets out the process, feedstock, machinery, approvals, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a lender or investor reviews.
Chemical entrepreneurs and distillery groups use it to size an ester plant and raise a loan, and banks use it to test whether the feed-to-product spread can carry the debt.
Also known as: acetates business plan, project report on acetates, ethyl acetate project report, ethyl and butyl acetate project report, acetates production project report.
Acetates manufacturing plant cost in India
Our sample report prices a 6.2 MT per day ethyl acetate plant, or 2,046 MT per year over 330 working days. It runs at 60% of capacity in Year 1 and 80% by Year 5, and sells at ₹92,100 per MT before GST.
Raw materials take 57.4% of sales, so the plant earns its money on the spread between ester and feed prices. That leaves a Year 3 gross margin of 26.0% and a net margin of 8.1%.

Acetates manufacturing process: ethyl acetate by esterification
The usual route in India reacts ethanol with glacial acetic acid over an acid catalyst. The reaction stops at equilibrium, so the plant keeps pulling the product out as it forms. That is why an ester plant is mostly distillation columns.
- Feed preparation
Ethanol (95% rectified spirit) and glacial acetic acid are metered from storage, with about 1% para-toluene sulphonic acid (PTSA) as the catalyst.
- Esterification
The mix boils in a steam-heated SS 316 reactor, where the acid and the alcohol form ethyl acetate and water.
- Azeotrope take-off
The esterification column lifts a low-boiling mixture of ester, ethanol and water overhead. Removing it drives the reaction towards more ester.
- Decanting
Water is added to the condensate, which splits into an ester-rich upper layer of roughly 94% ester and a watery lower layer.
- Ester purification
The upper layer is distilled again in a drying column, and ethyl acetate of 99.5–99.9% purity is drawn off, cooled and stored.
- Alcohol recovery
The watery layers go to a recovery column, and the ethanol it strips out is sent back to the reactor.
- Testing and dispatch
Each lot is checked for ester content by gas chromatography, moisture by Karl Fischer titration and acidity, then filled into drums or road tankers.
Step details follow a published pre-feasibility report for an Indian ethyl acetate plant (see sources).
Which acetates can an esterification plant make?
"Acetates" covers several esters of acetic acid. The solvent esters below share one route, so a plant is often designed to make two of them in campaigns. Cellulose acetate is a different business and needs its own report.
| Ethyl acetate | Acetic acid with ethanol. The highest-volume acetate, used in packaging inks, adhesives and pharma. Boils at about 77 °C, so it needs the least steam to purify. |
|---|---|
| n-Butyl acetate | Acetic acid with n-butanol. A slower-drying solvent for paints, lacquers and thinners. Boils at about 126 °C, so it needs more steam per tonne. |
| Amyl acetate | Acetic acid with amyl alcohol, often recovered from fusel oil at distilleries. Smaller market in lacquers and flavours. |
| Benzyl acetate | Acetic acid with benzyl alcohol. Sold in small lots at high purity to fragrance and flavour houses. |
| Cellulose acetate | Made by acetylating wood pulp with acetic anhydride, then spinning or moulding. A separate plant, not an ester solvent unit. |
Design for the second ester now: a column sized only for ethyl acetate may not handle butyl acetate's higher boiling point later. Decide the product slate before you order columns and reboilers.
Raw materials for ethyl acetate
By the reaction alone, a tonne of ethyl acetate needs about 0.52 tonne of ethanol and 0.68 tonne of acetic acid. In our sample, ethanol is the bigger cost at 57% of raw material spend, because it costs more per tonne than the acid.
Ethanol comes from molasses or grain distilleries, so supply and price depend on the cane and grain crop. Plants usually sign term contracts with one or two distilleries and buy acetic acid from domestic producers or importers.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Ethanol (95% rectified spirit) | 57% | 431.47 |
| Glacial acetic acid | 41% | 310.35 |
| PTSA catalyst | 2% | 15.14 |
| Total | 100% | 756.96 |
Machinery for an ethyl acetate plant
The three distillation columns and the tank farm take most of the machinery budget. In the sample, the esterification column with its reboiler is the single costliest item.
| Equipment | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| SS 316 esterification reactor | Holds the boiling acid, alcohol and catalyst | 46.14 |
| Esterification column with reboiler | Takes the ester azeotrope overhead | 52.73 |
| Ester purification column | Dries the ester to final purity | 46.14 |
| Alcohol recovery column | Returns ethanol from the watery layer | 32.95 |
| Decanters, condensers and heat exchangers | Split layers and recover heat | 39.54 |
| Nitrogen-blanketed tank farm | Stores feed and product safely | 46.13 |
| Steam boiler and cooling tower | Heat for reboilers, cooling for condensers | 39.54 |
| Gas chromatograph and Karl Fischer titrator | Test purity and moisture of each lot | 13.18 |
| Flameproof pumps, piping and electricals | Move solvent without ignition risk | 13.18 |
| Total plant and machinery | 329.53 | |

Utilities and manpower for an ester plant
Distillation runs on steam, so fuel matters more here than electricity. The plant also runs round the clock, which sets the shift strength.
| Steam | From a coal, biomass or oil-fired boiler, feeding the reboilers of all three columns |
|---|---|
| Cooling water | Cooling tower circuit for the overhead condensers and product coolers |
| Nitrogen | Blanketing for ester and ethanol tanks to keep air out of the vapour space |
| Power and fuel cost | ₹75.48 lakh in Year 3 in our sample, or 5.7% of sales |
| Manpower | 36 people in the sample: 5 in management and supervision, 13 skilled operators and 18 semi-skilled and unskilled workers |
| Wage bill | ₹80.64 lakh in Year 1, rising 5% a year |
Licences and rules for an acetates plant
Ester plants store large volumes of flammable liquids, so safety approvals take longer than the factory licence. Start them early. The rules below were checked in October 2026.
| Pollution board consent | "Organic chemicals manufacturing" is a Red category industry. Take consent to establish before construction and consent to operate before production. |
|---|---|
| Ethanol storage | Ethyl alcohol is notified under the Inflammable Substances Act, 1952, so bulk storage needs a PESO licence |
| Hazardous chemicals | The 1989 Hazardous Chemical Rules list ethyl acetate, ethyl alcohol, acetic acid and n-butyl acetate. Duties scale with the quantity stored. |
| Product standard | IS 229 for ethyl acetate is withdrawn, so buyers specify purity, moisture and acidity. IS 230:2025 covers n-butyl acetate. |
| Boiler and factory | Registration of the steam boiler with the state boiler inspectorate, a factory licence and a fire NOC |
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) registration and GST registration |
Rules vary by state and by the quantities you store. Confirm with the pollution board, PESO and the factories department.
Who buys ethyl acetate and butyl acetate?
Ethyl acetate dries fast and smells mild, which is why flexible packaging printers and laminators use so much of it. Ink, adhesive and pharma units are the other steady buyers, and butyl acetate goes mostly to paint and thinner makers.
Buyers reorder from suppliers whose lots hold purity, moisture and acidity steady. Selling prices track the cost of ethanol and acetic acid.
- Flexible packaging and gravure printing converters
- Printing ink manufacturers
- Paint, lacquer and adhesive makers
- Pharmaceutical and API manufacturers
- Flavour, fragrance and cosmetic units
- Solvent traders and distributors
Where a new plant wins: ethanol is the larger feed cost, so a site near a distillery cuts freight on the feed. Selling by tanker to printers within a day's drive keeps working capital low.
Mistakes that weaken an acetates project report
- Using a peak ester price
Ester prices swing with feed costs. Projections built on a good month overstate the spread; test a fall in price and a rise in ethanol together.
- Taking feed use from the equation
The 0.52 and 0.68 tonne figures are theoretical. Losses in recovery, vents and off-spec lots add to real consumption.
- Under-sizing steam
Three columns with reboilers need a boiler sized for the peak load, plus fuel cost in the projections.
- Leaving out safety distances
Storage for flammable solvents needs space, nitrogen blanketing and flameproof wiring. A plot that is too small fails the PESO review.
- Ignoring buyer credit
Trade receivables at 45 days are the biggest current asset in our sample. A thin cash credit limit leaves the plant short in Year 1.

Acetates project report: frequently asked questions
What is the cost of an ethyl acetate manufacturing plant in India?
Our sample report puts a 6.2 MT per day ethyl acetate plant at ₹695.47 lakh, including ₹329.53 lakh of plant and machinery, land, building and working capital margin. Costs rise with capacity, column design, tank farm size and the quality of the steam system. A report for your project prices these from quotations for your site.
Which raw materials are used to make ethyl acetate?
Ethanol and glacial acetic acid, with a small dose of an acid catalyst such as para-toluene sulphonic acid (PTSA). By the reaction alone, one tonne of ethyl acetate needs about 0.52 tonne of ethanol and 0.68 tonne of acetic acid. Real plants use a little more because some alcohol and ester are lost in recovery and venting.
Can the same plant make butyl acetate as well?
Often yes. Butyl acetate is made the same way, by esterifying acetic acid with n-butanol, so a batch or campaign plant can switch esters with cleaning and new operating settings. Butyl acetate boils at a higher temperature, so the columns, condensers and steam supply must be designed for both products from the start.
Is ethyl acetate manufacturing profitable?
It can be, but margins depend on the spread between the ester price and the cost of ethanol and acetic acid. In our illustrative sample, Year 3 net margin is 8.1%, return on investment 15% and break-even 44% of capacity. A real report tests what happens to DSCR when ethanol prices rise or ester prices fall.
Can I get a bank loan for an acetates plant?
Banks fund ester plants as MSME or corporate term loans backed by a detailed project report, usually with a cash credit limit for working capital. Eligible micro and small units can seek a CGTMSE guarantee, whose ceiling has been raised to ₹10 crore. Lenders check DSCR, feed supply contracts, PESO and pollution approvals before sanction.
Which licences does an ethyl acetate plant need?
Beyond Udyam, GST and a factory licence, expect three chemical-specific approvals. You need Red category consent from the State Pollution Control Board and a PESO licence for storing ethanol. You must also follow the Hazardous Chemical Rules, 1989, which list ethyl acetate, ethanol and acetic acid. A steam boiler needs registration with the state boiler inspectorate.
Is the sample report free and can I use it for a loan?
The sample is free to view and download. It shows the format and depth of an NPCS project report. Its figures are representative and not from a real plant, so do not submit it to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, site, feed sources and lender.
