To launch a profitable clothing franchise in India, pick your customer first, shortlist three brands that already serve that customer, and test the store's break-even before you pay any fee. Profit depends on three things you can check in advance: who owns the unsold stock, what the rent will be against realistic sales, and how much cash is left after the fitout.
Budgets differ sharply by brand. The enquiry form of Jockey India offers ₹45 lakh to ₹50 lakh and above ₹50 lakh as its investment choices, and its smallest carpet area option is 1,000 sq ft. Smaller regional and multi brand formats set their own terms, and many national brands publish none until you apply.
How much does it cost to open a clothing franchise in India?
There is no single price. Jockey's form names a budget band, while the franchise pages of Cantabil and Monte Carlo name none, so a "starting from ₹X lakh" figure for an apparel franchise on an aggregator site is that site's claim, not a published term of the brand.
The table splits a store launch into six cost lines, each with the question to put to the brand.
| Cost line | Who carries it | Ask the brand for |
|---|---|---|
| Fitout and fixtures | Franchisee (ICRA notes this for Cantabil's franchise stores) | Itemised quote and approved vendor list |
| Stock or stock deposit | Franchisee, as a deposit in Cantabil's model | Written stock model and return terms |
| Rent and lease deposit | Franchisee | Landlord's written rent, not a broker's estimate |
| Franchise fee or royalty | Franchisee, if the brand charges one | Fee schedule in the agreement |
| Billing system, signage, local licences | Franchisee | Vendor list and recurring charges |
| Working capital for salaries, power and slow months | Franchisee | Your own break-even sum (next section) |
Where a brand holds stock in your store against a deposit, as ICRA describes for Cantabil's franchise stores, your cash goes into the deposit. Where the brand sells stock to you, your cash goes into inventory that you carry until it sells.
Which clothing franchise is most profitable?
No published, audited data compares franchisee profit across brands, so any ranking you see comes from a brand or an aggregator. What can be checked is how a listed chain's stores perform. ICRA's September 2025 rating note on Cantabil Retail India records 599 exclusive stores at 31 March 2025, 131 of them franchised. Revenue growth came from 66 new stores, while same store sales rose only 4.0% by value and 2.1% by volume. Inventory days stood at 230 to 250 since FY2022, so stock took roughly eight months to sell.
Treat that as a reason to distrust promised returns. Test any offer with this sum:
- Get the brand's margin on MRP in writing, after discounts and returns.
- Add your monthly fixed costs: rent, salaries, power, loan instalment and any royalty.
- Divide the fixed costs by the margin to get the monthly sales you need to break even.
- Ask three current franchisees in towns like yours whether their sales reach that number.
Which type of clothes business is best for a first franchise?
Pick the category whose buyers already walk past your site every week. A brand's name cannot create footfall that the street does not have.
| Category | When customers buy | Effect on stock and cash |
|---|---|---|
| Wedding and festive ethnic wear | Around weddings and festivals | Sales arrive in bursts while rent is monthly |
| Men's and family everyday wear | Through the year, with festive peaks | Wide range, so more stock lines to fund |
| Kids' wear | Often, as children outgrow sizes | Many size lines for each style |
| Basics and innerwear | Repeat purchases | Narrower range, simpler to restock |

What must the franchise agreement settle when India has no franchise law?
India has no standalone franchise statute, so the agreement itself sets your rights, alongside general contract, trademark and competition law, according to the law firm S.S. Rana & Co. Have a lawyer read it, starting with these six clauses.
| Clause | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Territory | A written area in which the brand will not open a competing outlet |
| Stock and returns | Who owns the stock, whether unsold pieces can be returned, who pays for end of season sales |
| Targets | Minimum purchase or sales, and the penalty for missing it |
| Term and renewal | Length, renewal conditions, notice either side must give |
| Exit | How you can sell or hand over the store, and how stock and deposits are settled |
| Non-compete | Where and for how long you cannot trade in clothing after leaving |
How do you open the store, step by step?
- Fix the catchment. Count weekday and weekend footfall at the site and note which brands trade within sight. CBRE data reported by IBEF shows fashion and apparel took about 40% of the organised retail space absorbed in the first half of 2026, and about 69% of leasing in Chandigarh and Jaipur, so brands compete for the same lanes.
- Get written terms from three brands and speak to their current franchisees, including one outside the brand's showcase list.
- Negotiate the lease against your break-even sum, not the broker's asking rent.
- Register the business. Expect the brand to ask for a GST number so it can invoice you, and check your state labour department for shop and establishment registration. Udyam registration has been open to retail traders since 2 July 2021, though the Ministry of MSME says their benefits are restricted to priority sector lending.
- Fix your price band. As of October 2026, GST on garments is 5% up to ₹2,500 per piece and 18% above that, a rule in force since 22 September 2025 that replaced 12% for the higher band. The brand sets prices, so the effect shows up in the stock mix you order.
- Sign, fit out, train staff, stock and open. Ask for the brand's fixture list: display racks and mannequins, trial rooms, a billing counter with point of sale software and barcode printer, lighting and CCTV, signage, and stockroom racking.
How can you fund a clothing franchise store?
A first-time Mudra borrower can reach ₹10 lakh at most. The ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh Tarun Plus tier opens only after a Tarun loan is repaid, and trading is a covered activity, according to PIB's April 2026 Mudra note, with figures as of 27 March 2026. Against a brand budget such as Jockey's ₹45 lakh or more, Mudra can cover part of the fitout or stock, and the rest comes from savings or a regular bank term loan. Ask the lender whether a franchise store qualifies. For other routes, see ways to fund a new business and government schemes for small businesses.
What should you do before paying a franchise fee?
- Write down your customer, your site and the monthly sales that site can realistically support.
- Ask three brands for stock, margin, fee and territory terms in writing.
- Take the agreement to a lawyer before any payment, including a registration fee.

Frequently asked questions
Does Zara give franchises in India?
Not as far as published information shows. Apparel Resources reports that Zara's Indian stores are operated by Inditex Trent Retail India, a joint venture between Inditex and Trent in which Inditex controls sourcing and brand use. Treat any private "Zara franchise" offer as unverified until the company confirms it in writing, and pay no registration fee before then.
What franchise can I buy for 2 lakh?
Not a branded exclusive clothing store, going by the published evidence. Jockey's lowest investment option is ₹45 lakh to ₹50 lakh, and other brands publish no figure. A full store needs a fitout, a rent deposit and opening stock, so an offer at ₹2 lakh is a smaller format or something other than a store. Ask what the fee buys and who owns the stock.
Which franchise is best for beginners?
One with published terms, a record of running stores and existing franchisees willing to talk. The stock model matters more than the logo. Cantabil's franchisees pay a deposit against stock the company holds in their store, per ICRA, which limits the cash tied up in inventory. Ask each brand which model it uses before comparing offers.
Do clothing franchises charge royalties?
Some may and some may not, and many brands disclose nothing until you apply. Get the full fee schedule in writing: franchise fee, royalty if any, margin on MRP, and who pays for end of season discounts.
