Application of Starch in Various Industries

Besides being energy to a lot of plants and animals, starch is also used to manufacture multiple industrial products such as paper making process where starch is used as an adhesive. It is a wide industry where starch is a main product of use. Some other fields where application becomes mandatory are cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. It has been seen that starch usage has been significantly in use for multiple products especially in the food Industry. Obtained from multiple sources such as maize, sorghum root, tubers, for instance, arrowroot, potatoes, tapioca, and various other sources, starch is an extremely useful ingredient in food and other industrial field. By developing significantly over the years, its manufacturing has given a variety of by products, to cite an example:

  • A very interesting byproduct of wheat starch is gluten which not only helps diabetic patients to have diabetic food and for feeding cattle’s but also works as a thickening agent in textile printing.
  • By product of corn processing, zein is also tremendously helpful in preparation of stable class like plastics and its modification has helped several industries to use starch as an adhesive for preparation of coating compositions for paper.
  • Some of the undiscovered by products of starch are yet to be explored like the starch which are obtained from fruits come under undiscovered category. Like the fruit by products obtained from starch, there are multiple sources of starch by products yet to be discovered for the requirement and demands by several industries.

Industrial Business Obtained from Different Byproducts of Starch

  • Corn Starch – One of the important industries, the baking Industry, prepares products, to exemplify, cookies, cakes, icing and fillings etc are made by using the starch obtained from corn. As per NPCS, presence of amylase is considered to be 25 percent in normal cornstarch. In addition to this, 50% percent of the cornstarch is used majorly in the food industry. Several industries are using two types of corn starch namely Normal corn starch and waxy corn starch. Normal stars consist of 30 percent of amylase, and 70 percent of glucose polymer known as amyl pectin, while on the other hand, waxy corn starch comprises 100 percent of glucose polymer.
  • Other Starch –

Wheat starch, one of the oldest byproducts, is immensely used in the food industry for making bread and other bakery products the world over. Wheat flour components, consisting of mainly protein, starch and lipids, are extremely consumed by Indian people, hence, due to its high demand; its production along with business is profoundly on increase in present time and will keep getting higher in our near future.

Rice Starch consists of 80 percent of amyl pectin and 20 percent of amylase. Rice starch, being consumed mostly in the form of cooked rice, is famous with both food and non food based industries. As per NPCS, Basmati rice, an imported product of Pakistan, is very popular among countries including Malaysia due to its aroma and good quality. Due to its popularity business in the field of rice starch, where a lot of states of India, such as Bihar, Bengal, Kerala along with abroad countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, is rice consuming and apt.

NPCS, working keenly to help entrepreneurs and business expanders to find the correct project, is here with another project idea of starch business. In order to have more knowledge of this project, kindly refer to our book, The Complete Technology Book on Starch and its Derivatives. The book talks about properties, structure, manufacturing process, application and derivatives of starch. While the main aim of the book is to explore finely about structure, chemical properties, factors affecting starch properties etc.
