The leather industry in India holds a very prominent place in the Indian economy. The leather and leather products industry is one of the oldest manufacturing industries in India. The Indian leather industry provides employment to about 2.5 million people in the country and has an annual turnover of approximately US$ 5,000,000. Tamil Nadu is one of the largest centres of Indian leather industry.

Leather is one of the most widely traded commodities globally. The growth in demand for leather is driven by the fashion industry, especially footwear. Apart from this, furniture and interior design industries, as well as the automotive industry also demand leather. The leather industry has a place of prominence in the Indian economy due to substantial export earnings and growth.

The Indian leather industry accounts for around 12.93 per cent of the world’s leather production of hides/skins. The country ranks second in terms of footwear and leather garments production in the world and accounts for 9.57 per cent of the world’s footwear production.

Indian leather industry is a USD 13 billion industry and is expected to grow to USD 25 billion in next 10 years. This industry is of special significance as it employs more than 50% of workforce below 35 years of age. Growing demand, availability of skilled workforce, rising export, ease of availability of raw material and government incentives are the major factors driving the market. Currently India stands in second place in terms of production of footwear and leather garments.

In India, leather industry is in a predominant position with substantial export revenue generation, and thereby providing economic growth. The most premium leather products in the world are being made in India, and are much sought after in the global market.

Growth Drivers:

Indian leather industry is one among the top 8 industries for export revenue generation in India, holding 10% of the global raw material, and 2% of the global trade. India enjoys competitive benefits such as availability of abundant raw material, cheap and skilled labor, supporting institutions for industrial developments, and supportive domestic market. A recent survey states that, India has the largest livestock in the world. The country possesses the largest population of buffaloes, goat, and sheep. India also has the world’s largest technically trained manpower in leather craft, which enables it to surpass its competitors in the global market.

Youth Power: With 55% of the workforce below the age of 35, the Indian leather industry has one of the youngest and most productive workforces.

Exports:

In 2016-17, total exports from Leather & Leather Manufactures recorded export value worth US$ 5325.85 million comprising of Raw Hides and Skins, Finished Leather, Leather Goods, Leather Garments, Footwear of Leather, Leather Footwear Component and Saddlery and Harness.

During April 2016-January 2017, the major markets for Indian leather products were US (15.69 per cent), Germany (11.82 per cent), UK (10.85 per cent), Italy (6.61 per cent), Spain (5.27 per cent), France (5.02 per cent), Hong Kong (4.71 per cent), UAE (3.69 per cent), China (3.16 per cent), Netherlands (3.01 per cent), Belgium (1.78 per cent) and Australia (1.44 per cent).

Leather is one of the world’s mostly traded commodities. On average, global leather trade is estimated to be around $60 billion for a year, and is predicted by the industry analysts to grow further. Global leather industry is estimated to be around $85 billion USD. Developed countries such as US are the major consumers of leather items, while developing countries constitute a major share of manufacturing leather products.
