The tobacco industry is one of the most profitable industries in the world. A large proportion of Indian economy is agro based in which Tobacco is one of the principal cash crops. The tobacco production and its allied products’ sales in the country have played a prominent role in the development of nation’s economy. India is the largest tobacco market in the world in terms of tobacco consumption.
Popular among rural and urban consumer, smokeless tobacco is also much more popular among woman than smoking. The smokeless industry in India is highly fragmented - some products are commercially manufactured but many are made in the home and sold locally. Smokeless tobacco products in India include khaini, gutka, mawa, gudhaku, and zarda. Smokeless tobacco is tobacco or a tobacco product that is used by means other than smoking. These uses include chewing, sniffing, placing the product between the teeth and gum, or application to the skin.
In a recent Global Adult Tobacco Survey, it was reported that khaini is the most commonly used tobacco product in India, followed by gutka. Gutka is the most popular form of chewing tobacco sold in India.
India is the second largest producer of tobacco in the world. India is exporting tobacco today 80 nations which is over all continents in the world. At present the India Tobacco industry is providing livelihood to more than 25 million people in the country.
Around 48% is in the form of chewing tobacco out of the total tobacco produced in the country, were 38% as bidis, and only 14% as cigarettes. These bidis snuff and chewing tobacco (such as Khaini, Zarda and Gutka) from the bulk (86%) of India’s total tobacco production. Production of cigarettes is 90% of total production of tobacco related products in the rest of the world. In India Tobacco is an important commercial crop grown.
