What is a egg powder project report?
An egg powder project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a plant that breaks fresh hen eggs, pasteurises the liquid and spray dries it into a shelf-stable powder. It sets out the process, machinery, egg supply, market, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a bank needs before lending.
Poultry farmers, food ingredient traders and first-time food processors use it to size the plant and apply for a term loan; lenders use it to judge whether the unit can repay.
Also known as: egg powder business plan, project report on egg powder, egg powder plant DPR, spray dried egg powder project report.
What a bank checks in an egg powder project report
Egg powder is a high-volume, low-margin business, so a credit officer looks hard at egg cost and loan cover. These are the values in our sample report and why each one matters.
A report showing a much lower share is usually assuming cheap eggs or too high a powder yield. Banks test it against local farm-gate egg prices.
Enzyme and anti-caking agent are minor. A rise of a few paise per egg moves profit more than any other cost, so the report should test it.
The debt service coverage ratio (cash available to pay the loan, divided by the instalment) dips in the early years. Lenders look at the weakest year, not only the 1.42 average.
The unit must run at about half its capacity to cover costs. That needs a steady egg supply every day, including in the summer months when layer output drops.
Values are the assumptions and results in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your capacity, egg source and buyers.
Egg powder manufacturing plant cost in India
Cost depends mainly on the size of the spray dryer, measured by how much water it can evaporate an hour. The middle tier is the unit modelled in our sample report; the other two are indicative ranges.
Small unit
₹1.5–2.5 crore
About 150–250 kg of powder per day
- Machinery₹70–120 lakh
- Building and cold room₹40–80 lakh
- Working capital margin₹8–15 lakh
MSME term loan; PMFME subsidy only if it qualifies as a micro unit
Medium unit
₹414 lakh
630 kg per day, 2,07,900 kg per year
- Plant and machinery₹185 lakh
- Land and building₹144 lakh
- Working capital margin₹23 lakh
Term loan ₹311 lakh (75%), promoter ₹104 lakh
Export-scale plant
₹15–30 crore
About 2–5 MT of powder per day
- Machinery₹7–14 crore
- Land and building₹4–8 crore
- Working capital margin₹1–3 crore
Term loan; usually built with its own layer farms or egg contracts
Small and export-scale ranges are indicative. They vary with dryer make, the share of yolk and albumen powder in the mix, and land cost.
Egg powder manufacturing process
Whole egg powder is made in seven stages. The same line can make yolk or albumen (egg white) powder by separating the egg at the breaking stage.
- Receiving and candling
Eggs from layer farms are graded and passed over a light to remove cracked, dirty or blood-spot eggs before they enter the clean area.
- Washing and sanitising
Eggs are washed in warm water and sanitised, so shell dirt and bacteria do not reach the liquid egg.
- Breaking and separation
An automatic breaker cracks the shells and collects whole egg liquid, or splits it into yolk and white.
- Filtering and chilling
The liquid is strained of shell pieces and membranes and held at about 4°C in jacketed tanks until it is pasteurised.
- Pasteurisation
A plate pasteuriser heats the liquid to about 60–65°C for a few minutes, enough to kill Salmonella without cooking the protein.
- Spray drying
The liquid is sprayed as a fine mist into hot air at about 160–180°C, leaving a powder with not more than 5% moisture.
- Sifting and packing
The cooled powder is sifted, tested for moisture and microbes, and packed in nitrogen-flushed lined bags, usually 20–25 kg for industry.
Raw materials and egg yield
Liquid whole egg is only about a quarter solids, so most of what you buy is water that the dryer removes. Roughly 85 to 90 average hen eggs make 1 kg of whole egg powder, which is why the egg price decides the business.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh hen eggs | 97% | 620.73 |
| Glucose oxidase enzyme | 2% | 12.80 |
| Food grade anti-caking agent | 1% | 6.40 |
| Total | 100% | 639.93 |
Glucose oxidase removes the natural sugar in the egg so the powder does not brown in storage. The egg yield is an indicative figure and depends on egg size and breaking losses.
Machinery for an egg powder plant
The spray dryer is the largest single cost and sets the plant's capacity. Everything before it, from the breaker to the pasteuriser, is sized to keep the dryer fed for a full shift.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Egg washing and candling machine | Cleans eggs and rejects cracked ones | 14.81 |
| Automatic egg breaking and separating machine | Cracks eggs, separates yolk and white | 29.62 |
| Liquid egg filters and jacketed chilling tanks | Strains and holds liquid egg cold | 14.81 |
| Plate pasteuriser with holding tube | Heat-treats the liquid against Salmonella | 18.51 |
| Homogeniser | Gives an even liquid for drying | 9.26 |
| Spray dryer with hot air generator | Turns liquid egg into powder | 64.79 |
| Steam boiler | Steam for pasteurising and cleaning | 11.11 |
| Cold room for shell eggs | Holds incoming eggs before breaking | 9.25 |
| Powder sifter and nitrogen flush packing machine | Sieves and packs the powder | 12.96 |
| Total plant and machinery | 185.12 | |
Costs are the sample report's estimates for a 630 kg per day line. Get current quotations before you finalise.
Who buys egg powder in India and abroad?
Buyers want egg powder because it is pasteurised, easy to dose and keeps for months without a cold chain. Biscuit, cake and pasta makers use it in place of shell eggs, and many Indian plants also sell to buyers abroad.
- Biscuit, cake and bakery manufacturers
- Pasta, noodle and ready-mix makers
- Mayonnaise, sauce and dressing makers
- Confectionery and ice cream makers
- Food ingredient distributors
- Egg product importers abroad
Where a new unit wins: eggs are bulky and fragile, while powder is light. A plant placed inside a layer farm cluster buys eggs at farm-gate prices and ships powder anywhere, which a unit far from the farms cannot match.
Licences and approvals for an egg powder unit
Food safety rules apply from day one, and export rules apply as soon as you ship abroad. Status below is as of October 2026.
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) registration and GST registration |
|---|---|
| Food safety | FSSAI manufacturing licence: State licence for most MSME units, Central licence above ₹20 crore turnover or larger production capacity |
| Export approval | Plant approval by the Export Inspection Agency under the Export of Egg and Egg Products Rules, 2021; approval is valid for three years and needs an in-house or tied-up laboratory |
| Export inspection | Egg products, including dried egg, must pass quality control and inspection before each export |
| GST | HSN 0408 (birds' eggs not in shell, dried), taxed at 5% from 22 September 2025 |
| Pollution board consent | Consent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board, covering wash water, shell waste and boiler emissions |
Loans and schemes for an egg powder plant
Most egg powder plants cost more than the small-unit schemes allow, so the term loan is the main route and subsidies help at the edges.
MSME term loan with CGTMSE
Guarantee cover up to ₹10 croreCollateral-free guarantee for eligible micro and small enterprises, raised from ₹5 crore from 1 April 2025. Suits a medium egg powder unit.
PMFME
35% subsidy, up to ₹10 lakhCredit-linked capital subsidy for micro food processing units, with a 10% own contribution. Fits only a small plant.
PMKSY cold chain and value addition
35% grant, up to ₹10 croreFor larger integrated projects; poultry is among the covered sectors. Check eligibility with the Ministry of Food Processing Industries first.
Scheme limits and eligibility change. Confirm current terms with the bank or the scheme portal before applying.
Mistakes that weaken an egg powder project report
- Using too few eggs per kg of powder
A low eggs-per-kg figure ignores small eggs, breaking losses and liquid left on shells, so it overstates profit.
- Taking a yearly average egg price
Egg prices swing through the year. Without a buying plan or farm contract, the unit runs below break-even in the costly months.
- Leaving out laboratory and testing
Export rules need Salmonella-free product and a working laboratory. A report with no lab cost or staff will not satisfy an export buyer or a careful lender.
- Under-costing dryer fuel
The spray dryer and boiler burn fuel to remove about three kilograms of water for every kilogram of powder. Using an electricity-only power estimate understates running cost.

Egg Powder project report: frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to set up an egg powder plant in India?
A small plant making 150–250 kg of powder a day needs roughly ₹1.5–2.5 crore, and an export-scale plant of 2–5 MT a day needs about ₹15–30 crore. Our sample report models a 630 kg per day unit at ₹414 lakh, including land, building and working capital margin. These are indicative figures; your report works out the cost for your capacity and site.
How many eggs are needed to make 1 kg of egg powder?
Roughly 85 to 90 average hen eggs give 1 kg of whole egg powder. Liquid whole egg is only about a quarter solids, and the powder keeps not more than 5% water, so most of the weight is evaporated in the dryer. The exact figure depends on egg size, breaking losses and how much liquid sticks to the shells.
Which machines are needed for egg powder manufacturing?
The core line is an egg washer and candler, an automatic egg breaking machine, filters and chilling tanks, a plate pasteuriser and a homogeniser. Then come the spray dryer with its hot air generator, a steam boiler, a cold room for shell eggs, and a sifter with a nitrogen flush packing machine. The spray dryer is the largest single item.
Is egg powder manufacturing profitable?
It can be, but margins are thin because eggs make up most of the cost. In our illustrative sample, a 630 kg per day unit earns a 14% return on investment in Year 3. It breaks even at about 50% of capacity and pays back in about 4.5 years. Egg buying price and dryer fuel cost decide most of the result.
What licences do I need to make and export egg powder?
You need an FSSAI manufacturing licence, State or Central depending on capacity and turnover, plus Udyam, GST and pollution board consent. To export, the plant must be approved by the Export Inspection Agency under the egg products export rules, and each consignment is subject to inspection. Egg powder falls under HSN 0408 and attracts 5% GST.
Can I get a PMEGP or PMFME loan for an egg powder unit?
Only a very small unit fits these schemes. PMEGP covers manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh, and PMFME gives a 35% credit-linked capital subsidy capped at ₹10 lakh for micro food processing units. Most egg powder plants cost more, so they usually take an MSME term loan, often with CGTMSE guarantee cover.
Is the egg powder project report PDF free, and can I use it for a loan?
The sample is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so do not submit it to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and scheme.
