What is a dextrose powder project report?
A dextrose powder project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that converts maize starch into crystalline dextrose monohydrate using enzymes. It sets out the process, machinery, starch and steam needs, market, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a lender checks before funding the plant.
Promoters use it to size the plant and apply for a term loan; banks and investors use it to judge whether the unit can repay from its own cash flow.
Also known as: dextrose monohydrate project report, glucose powder plant project report, dextrose powder business plan, project report on dextrose powder.
What a bank checks in a dextrose powder project report
A dextrose plant lives on the spread between starch cost and dextrose price. Lenders look first at the numbers that show that spread and the cash tied up in stock. These are the values in our sample report.
A report that shows a much lower share is usually pricing starch too cheaply or dextrose too high. Credit officers compare both with current mandi and trade rates.
Enzymes and refining chemicals make up the rest. Because starch dominates, the report should show what a rise in starch price does to profit and DSCR.
Bagged dextrose waiting for dispatch is the largest current asset in the sample. It drives the cash credit limit more than starch stock or buyer credit.
DSCR (debt service coverage ratio) is cash available divided by loan dues. The sample averages 1.56; banks look closely at the weakest year, not only the average.
Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your capacity, starch source and buyers.

Dextrose powder manufacturing process
Indian plants use the enzyme route: starch is broken down to glucose, refined, then crystallised slowly. The crystallisers set the pace of the whole plant, so their volume decides real daily output.
- Slurry preparation
Maize starch is mixed with water to roughly 30–35% solids and the pH is adjusted for the first enzyme.
- Liquefaction
Thermostable alpha-amylase is added and the slurry is jet-cooked with steam at about 105°C, which breaks starch into short dextrins.
- Saccharification
Glucoamylase converts the dextrins to glucose at about 60°C over two to three days, until the syrup is around 95% glucose.
- Refining
The syrup is filtered to remove protein and fat, decolourised with activated carbon and passed through ion exchange resins to remove salts.
- Evaporation
Refined syrup is concentrated in a multiple-effect evaporator to the high solids needed for crystallisation.
- Crystallisation
Seeded syrup is cooled slowly in jacketed crystallisers over two to four days, so dextrose monohydrate crystals grow to a size that separates cleanly.
- Centrifuging and drying
Crystals are spun out and washed, the mother liquor goes back to the process, and a fluid bed dryer brings the powder to its specified moisture.
- Sieving and packing
The powder is sieved, tested for glucose content, moisture and ash, and packed in lined HDPE bags.
Raw materials for dextrose powder
One kilogram of dry starch can give up to about 1.22 kg of dextrose monohydrate, because glucose takes up water during hydrolysis and again in the crystal. Starch moisture, process losses and unrecovered mother liquor bring practical use close to one tonne of commercial starch per tonne of product.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Maize starch | 85% | 387.31 |
| Enzymes and chemicals | 15% | 68.35 |
| Total | 100% | 455.66 |
A plant near maize or tapioca starch mills saves freight on its largest input. Agree supply with two or more starch makers.
Machinery for a dextrose powder plant
Most equipment is stainless steel and food grade. A steam boiler and cooling tower sit outside this list but are essential, since jet cooking, evaporation and drying all run on steam.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Liquefaction tanks | Jet cooking and holding with alpha-amylase | 33.80 |
| Saccharification tanks | Hold syrup at temperature while glucoamylase works | 25.35 |
| Refining and carbon filters | Remove protein, colour and salts | 25.35 |
| Crystallisers | Grow dextrose crystals by slow cooling | 33.79 |
| Centrifuge and dryer | Separate, wash and dry the crystals | 33.79 |
| Packing | Sieve, weigh and bag the powder | 16.90 |
| Total plant and machinery | 168.98 | |

Who buys dextrose powder in India
Demand comes from food makers who want a cleaner, less sweet sugar than sucrose and from pharma makers who need a defined glucose source. Biscuit and confectionery units, energy drink packers and tablet makers buy steadily through the year, unlike many sweeteners that follow the cane season.
- Biscuit, bakery and confectionery makers
- Glucose-D and energy drink packers
- Pharmaceutical tablet and syrup makers
- IV fluid manufacturers
- Fermentation and nutraceutical units
- Traders and distributors
Grade decides the buyer list: food buyers check FSSAI and IS 874 compliance, while pharma and IV fluid makers buy only Indian Pharmacopoeia grade and audit the plant first. Plan the refining section and laboratory for the grade you want to sell.
Licences and standards for a dextrose powder unit
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) registration and GST registration |
|---|---|
| Food licence | FSSAI manufacturing licence; dextrose has its own standard under regulation 2.8.5 of the Food Products Standards regulations |
| Food-grade standard | IS 874:1992 covers dextrose monohydrate for the food industry and sets limits such as D-glucose content and loss on drying |
| Pharma grade | IS 874 excludes pharmaceutical use; pharma buyers need product to the Indian Pharmacopoeia monograph. Check drug licence needs with your State Drugs Control office |
| Pollution board consent | Consent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board, covering wash water, spent carbon and ion exchange regeneration effluent |
| Steam boiler | Registration and periodic inspection of the boiler by the state boiler inspectorate |
Requirements differ by state and change over time. Confirm them with each department before you apply.
Mistakes that weaken a dextrose powder project report
- Pricing all output at pharma rates
Only IP-grade product from an audited plant earns pharma prices. A new unit usually sells mostly food grade at first.
- Assuming every kilo of glucose crystallises
Part of the glucose stays in the mother liquor. The report must show how much is recycled and what happens to the rest.
- Sizing crystallisers on paper output
Crystallisation takes days, not hours. Too little tank volume caps daily output well below installed capacity.
- No starch price test
With starch at 85% of raw material cost, a report without a starch price sensitivity leaves the lender guessing.
- Leaving out steam and effluent costs
Boiler fuel, water treatment and resin regeneration are real running costs, and lenders expect to see them costed.

Dextrose Powder project report: frequently asked questions
How much does a dextrose powder manufacturing plant cost in India?
It depends on what the unit actually does. A glucose-D blending and packing unit can start at roughly ₹30–80 lakh, while a plant that makes dextrose from starch costs a few crore. Our sample report models a 10 MT per day plant at ₹339 lakh. These are indicative figures; your project report works out the cost for your capacity, grade and location.
Is dextrose powder the same as glucose powder?
Mostly, yes. Dextrose is the trade name for crystalline D-glucose made from starch, and the common grade is dextrose monohydrate, which carries about 9% water in the crystal. Retail "glucose powder" drinks are usually dextrose blended with vitamins, minerals or flavour, so a blending unit buys dextrose rather than making it.
What raw material is used to make dextrose powder?
Maize starch is the usual raw material in India, converted with two enzymes, alpha-amylase and glucoamylase. In our sample report starch makes up 85% of raw material cost, with enzymes and refining chemicals making up the rest. Some plants use tapioca or rice starch where it is cheaper locally; the process stays much the same.
Is dextrose manufacturing profitable?
In our illustrative sample, a 10 MT per day plant earns a 17% return on investment in Year 3, breaks even at 46% of capacity and pays back in about 4.1 years. Real profit depends mainly on the gap between starch cost and dextrose price, how much mother liquor is recovered, and how much output sells as pharma grade.
Can I get a PMEGP loan for a dextrose plant?
Only for a very small unit. PMEGP covers manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh, which suits a glucose-D blending and packing unit but not a plant making dextrose from starch. A starch-to-dextrose plant usually takes an MSME term loan, often with CGTMSE guarantee cover, plus a cash credit limit for starch and finished stock.
What is the difference between dextrose monohydrate and dextrose anhydrous?
Monohydrate crystals hold one molecule of water, so the powder has about 9% moisture; it is the cheaper, more common grade for food and tablets. Anhydrous dextrose has that water removed by further crystallisation or drying and is used where low moisture matters, such as some IV fluids and dry mixes. It needs extra equipment.
Is the sample dextrose powder project report PDF free, and can I use it for a loan?
The sample is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report; its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, grade, location and loan scheme.
