What is a carton boxes project report?
A carton boxes project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that corrugates kraft paper into 3 or 5 ply board and converts it into printed shipping cartons. It sets out the process, machines, paper and starch needs, project cost, loan structure, five-year profit, DSCR and break-even that a bank checks before funding.
Entrepreneurs and existing printers use it to size the unit and raise a term loan; credit officers use it to judge whether box sales can repay the loan.
Also known as: corrugated carton box project report, project report on carton boxes, carton boxes business plan, DPR for carton box manufacturing.
What a bank checks in a carton boxes project report
A carton unit lives on a thin gap between paper cost and box price, so lenders look hard at a few numbers. These are the values in our sample report and why each one matters.
Paper and starch take more than half of every rupee of sales. A report that shows a much lower share is usually pricing boxes too high or paper too low.
Kraft paper prices move with waste paper and mill supply. The bank expects the report to test a paper price rise, because no other cost moves profit as much.
Against a selling price of ₹14.10 per box, this is the margin the loan depends on. Credit officers compare it with quotes buyers actually pay.
Factories that buy cartons expect credit. Trade receivables are the largest part of working capital in the sample, ahead of paper stock.
Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your capacity, buyers and paper suppliers.

Carton boxes manufacturing process
Corrugated cartons are made in two halves: board making, then box conversion. Some small units buy ready board and run only the second half, but making your own board lets you set the ply and paper grade for each order.
- Corrugation
Fluting paper runs through heated corrugating rolls and is bonded to a kraft liner with starch adhesive on the single facer.
- Sheet cutting
The single face web is cut into sheets of the box blank size on a reel to sheet cutter.
- Pasting
Single face sheets are pasted to a top liner for 3 ply board, or to a second single face sheet and liner for 5 ply.
- Pressing and drying
Pasted boards are pressed and dried so the starch sets and the board stays flat; warped board jams the printer later.
- Cutting and creasing
A rotary cutter and creaser trims each board and presses the score lines where the box will fold.
- Printing and slotting
A flexo printer slotter prints the buyer's brand and product details and cuts the flap slots in one pass.
- Stitching and bundling
The joint is stitched with wire or glued, and finished boxes are counted, bundled and stored flat for dispatch.
Raw materials for carton boxes
Kraft paper comes in reels, graded by GSM (grams per square metre) and bursting factor. Liner and fluting grades are chosen per order, so a unit keeps several reel widths and grades in stock and buys from at least two paper mills.
| Raw material | Share of cost | Year 3 (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Kraft paper reels for liner and fluting | 86% | 136.46 |
| Starch adhesive with borax and caustic | 6% | 9.52 |
| Flexo printing ink | 3% | 4.76 |
| Stitching wire and box joint glue | 5% | 7.93 |
| Total | 100% | 158.67 |
Carton box making machines and their cost
The single facer is the costliest item in the sample, followed closely by the flexo printer slotter. The printer decides how many colours and how large a box you can offer.
| Machine | What it does | Sample cost (₹ lakh) |
|---|---|---|
| Single facer corrugating machine with reel stands | Flutes paper and bonds it to a liner | 11.20 |
| Reel to sheet cutter | Cuts single face web into sheets | 4.07 |
| Board pasting machine | Builds 3 or 5 ply board | 4.58 |
| Rotary board cutter and creaser | Trims board and marks fold lines | 4.58 |
| Two colour flexo printer slotter | Prints and cuts flap slots | 10.18 |
| Platen die punching machine | Cuts trays, die-cut and special shapes | 5.09 |
| Box stitching machine | Joins the box with wire stitches | 3.05 |
| Thermic fluid heater | Heats the corrugating rolls | 5.09 |
| Bundling press and testing equipment | Bundles boxes, tests bursting strength | 3.05 |
| Total plant and machinery | 50.89 | |

Who buys carton boxes, and how a new unit gets orders
Almost every factory that ships goods buys cartons, so a box unit sells to a spread of local industries rather than one. Orders are printed to the buyer's size and strength and repeat weekly or monthly, which suits a unit that can deliver within a day.
Demand has seasons. Sweet and gift boxes peak before Diwali, and fruit boxes follow the mango and apple harvests. A mix of buyers keeps the line busy through the year.
- FMCG and food processing units
- Pharmaceutical and cosmetic manufacturers
- E-commerce sellers and fulfilment centres
- Electrical, hardware and auto parts makers
- Fruit, vegetable and sweet traders
- Packaging traders and distributors
Where a new unit wins: empty boxes are bulky and light, so freight eats into the price over long distances. A unit close to an industrial area can beat larger plants on delivery time and short printed runs.
Licences, standards and GST for a carton box unit
| Business registration | Udyam (MSME) registration and GST registration |
|---|---|
| GST on cartons | Cartons, boxes and cases of corrugated or non-corrugated paper (HSN 4819 10 and 4819 20) are in the 5% schedule under Notification 9/2025-Integrated Tax (Rate), as checked in October 2026 |
| Pollution board consent | Tamil Nadu lists cardboard or corrugated box units that do not make paper and use no boiler in its White category; other states set their own lists, so confirm the category with your State Pollution Control Board |
| Product standard | IS 2771 (Part 1): 1990 sets general requirements for corrugated fibreboard boxes and is the usual reference in buyer specifications |
| Factory licence | Under the Factories Act where worker and power thresholds apply; rules vary by state |
| Power | Industrial three-phase connection sanctioned for the connected load of the line and heater |
Mistakes that weaken a carton box project report
- Pricing boxes without a weight-based cost sheet
Buyers pay per box, but paper is bought per kilogram. Each box size should be costed from its board area and paper GSM, or margins vanish on large boxes.
- No allowance for trim and die-cut waste
Reel deckle trim, start-up waste and die-cut offcuts all lose paper. Waste can be sold, but saleable output must allow for it.
- Leaving out printing plates and dies
Every new printed design needs a flexo plate, and special shapes need a cutting die. These recur with each new buyer and belong in running costs.
- Ignoring buyer credit
Box buyers pay late, often longer than the paper mill gives you. Without enough debtor days the cash credit limit runs short in the first year.

Carton Boxes project report: frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to start a carton box manufacturing unit?
A small unit with a basic semi-automatic 3 ply line needs roughly ₹25–50 lakh, and a fully automatic 5 ply plant about ₹3–6 crore. Our sample report models a 9,100 boxes per day semi-automatic unit at ₹112.80 lakh, including land, building and working capital margin. These are indicative ranges; your report works out the cost for your capacity and site.
Which machines are needed to make carton boxes?
A full unit needs a single facer corrugating machine with reel stands, a reel to sheet cutter and a board pasting machine to make board. To convert it, you need a rotary cutter and creaser, a flexo printer slotter, a die punching machine and a box stitching machine. Heated corrugating rolls need a thermic fluid heater or a small steam boiler.
What is the main raw material for carton boxes?
Kraft paper in reels is the main raw material, used both as the flat liner and as the fluting medium. In our sample report it makes up 86% of raw material cost. Starch adhesive, flexo ink and stitching wire or glue make up the rest. Paper is bought by GSM and bursting factor to match each buyer's box strength.
What is the difference between 3 ply and 5 ply carton boxes?
A 3 ply box has one fluted layer between two liners and suits light goods such as food packs, garments and small electricals. A 5 ply box has two fluted layers and three liners, so it stacks higher and carries heavier loads such as appliances, bottles and fruit. Most carton units make both on the same line.
Is the carton box business profitable?
In our illustrative sample, a 9,100 boxes per day unit earns a 26% return on investment in Year 3. Break-even is at about 36% of capacity and payback takes about 3.2 years. Real profit depends on kraft paper buying, trim waste, the share of printed boxes in your order book and how quickly buyers pay.
Can I get a PMEGP loan for a carton box unit?
Yes, if the project cost is within the PMEGP limit of ₹50 lakh for manufacturing. New units get a margin-money subsidy of 15–35% of project cost, depending on category and location, and the promoter puts in 5–10%. Larger carton plants usually take an MSME term loan. In every case the bank needs a project report with projections and DSCR.
Carton box ka business kaise shuru kare?
Start by fixing your buyers and box sizes, then choose the line: a semi-automatic 3 ply unit for local orders, or a 5 ply line for heavier goods. Take Udyam and GST registration, find a shed with three-phase power, get machinery quotations and prepare a project report for the bank loan. Line up two kraft paper suppliers before production starts.
Is the carton boxes project report PDF free, and can I use it for a loan?
The sample is free to view and download. It shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are illustrative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and loan scheme.
