What is a animal feed from bagasse project report?

An animal feed from bagasse project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that turns dried sugarcane bagasse, molasses, urea, oilcakes and minerals into cattle feed blocks. It sets out the process, machinery, raw materials, market, project cost, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a lender checks.

Sugar mills, dairy cooperatives and new feed entrepreneurs use it to size the plant and apply for a loan or scheme; banks use it to judge repayment.

Also known as: bagasse cattle feed project report, bagasse feed block plant DPR, cattle feed from molasses and bagasse project report, animal feed from bagasse business plan.

What a bank checks in a bagasse feed project

Bagasse itself is cheap, so lenders look past it to the costs and stocks that decide cash flow. These are the values in our sample report and why each one is tested.

71.5%Raw material share of sales

Feed is a thin-margin product. A report that shows a much lower share has usually priced oilcakes or bran too low.

40%De-oiled cakes in raw material cost

Protein, not bagasse, is the biggest bill. Banks expect the report to test what a rise in cake prices does to loan repayment.

60 daysRaw material stock

Bagasse comes only in the crushing season, so stock and storage drive the working capital limit. Raw material stock is the largest current asset in the sample.

1.75Average DSCR

Debt service coverage ratio (DSCR) is cash available for loan repayment divided by the instalments due. The sample's lowest year is 1.52.

Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your capacity, suppliers and market.

Animal feed from bagasse manufacturing process

Raw bagasse has only about 2% crude protein and roughly 30% digestibility. The plant's job is to make it safe to store and to build a balanced ration around it. Our sample uses the block route in seven stages.

  1. Depithing and shredding

Bagasse from the mill is depithed and shredded to short, even fibres that mix and press well.

  2. Drying

Fresh bagasse holds about half its weight as water; a rotary dryer brings it to about 12% moisture so it does not turn mouldy in store.

  3. Grinding

De-oiled cakes and bran are ground in a hammer mill to a uniform mash.

  4. Molasses and urea premix

Feed grade urea and minerals are dissolved in warm molasses in a dosing tank so the urea spreads evenly through the batch.

  5. Mixing

Dried bagasse, ground concentrate and the premix are blended in a ribbon mixer to the ration formula.

  6. Block pressing

A hydraulic press compacts the mix into dense blocks that take far less truck and godown space than loose fodder.

  7. Curing and packing

Blocks are cooled, weighed, shrink wrapped and stacked for dispatch.

Treatment matters: in an IVRI trial, bagasse pith treated with 4% urea for 21 days replaced half the wheat straw in a complete feed. Daily gain fell from 626 g to 450 g. Steam treatment raises digestibility more, at a higher plant cost.

Raw materials for bagasse cattle feed

Bagasse is the bulk of the block by weight but only 12% of raw material cost in the sample. The protein sources set the price, and molasses has been cheaper to buy since GST on it was cut from 28% to 5% in October 2023.

Who buys bagasse feed blocks?

Demand peaks when green fodder and straw run short, in the dry months and after floods or drought. Dairy farmers buy blocks as a ready ration, and state agencies stock them in fodder banks because a compressed block keeps and travels far better than loose straw.

  • Dairy farmers and milk cooperatives
  • Gaushalas and cattle shelters
  • State animal husbandry and disaster relief departments
  • Cattle, sheep and goat fattening farms
  • Feed dealers in fodder-deficit districts

Where a new unit wins: beside a sugar mill. Bagasse and molasses then come with little freight, and the finished blocks, not the bulky raw fibre, make the long trip to fodder-short districts.

Licences, standards and GST for a bagasse feed unit

Business registrationUdyam (MSME) registration and GST registration
Pollution board consentConsent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board. Odisha, for example, lists fish, poultry and cattle feed units in the Orange category; each state sets its own list
Product standardIS 2052:2009, Compounded feeds for cattle, is the BIS standard buyers and agencies refer to; confirm with BIS how a high-fibre block is classed
GST on the productPrepared cattle feed under heading 2309 is listed at nil GST (Circular 80/54/2018-GST); confirm your classification with your CA
Fire safetyFire NOC where required; dry bagasse yards and godowns carry a real fire load
Factory licenceUnder the Factories Act where worker and power thresholds apply; rules vary by state

Scheme terms as checked in October 2026. Limits change, so confirm current terms with the bank or the scheme agency before applying.

Mistakes that weaken an animal feed from bagasse project report

  • Pricing bagasse at mill-gate value only

Fresh bagasse is about half water, so freight and drying fuel per tonne of dry fibre can cost more than the bagasse itself.

  • Assuming year-round supply

Mills crush for part of the year and burn much of their bagasse in their own boilers. The report needs a supply agreement and covered storage for the off-season.

  • Overstating feed value

Untreated bagasse is poorly digested. Buyers and agencies test protein and fibre, so the formula must show where protein and energy come from.

  • Loose control of urea

Urea has to be dosed and mixed evenly. A report without a dosing system and a testing laboratory raises questions about product safety.

  • Leaving out fire protection

Dry bagasse and pith burn easily. Hydrants, spacing in the yard and insurance belong in the project cost.

Animal Feed from Bagasse project report: frequently asked questions

What is the cost of an animal feed from bagasse plant in India?

A small feed block unit using bought dried bagasse needs roughly ₹50–100 lakh. A plant with its own dryer at 25–40 MT per day needs about ₹2.5–4.5 crore. Our sample report models a 31 MT per day plant at ₹320.94 lakh, including ₹43.76 lakh of working capital margin. These are indicative figures; your project report works out the cost for your site.

Can sugarcane bagasse be fed to cattle directly?

Only in a limited way. Raw bagasse has about 2% crude protein and roughly 30% digestibility, so cattle cannot live on it alone. It works as a roughage base when it is treated or mixed with molasses, urea, oilcakes and minerals. Research reviewed by FAO shows treated bagasse supports intake, but performance falls if its share in the ration is too high.

What raw materials are mixed with bagasse to make cattle feed?

Dried and depithed bagasse is the roughage base. Cane molasses adds energy and palatability, feed grade urea adds nitrogen, and de-oiled cakes and rice or wheat bran supply protein and energy. Mineral mixture and salt complete the ration. In our sample report de-oiled cakes are the biggest cost at 40% of raw material spend.

Which machines are needed for a bagasse feed block unit?

The core line is a depither and shredder, a rotary drum dryer, a hammer mill for cakes and bran, and a molasses and urea dosing system. A ribbon mixer and a hydraulic feed block press follow. Conveyors, a weighing and shrink wrapping line and a small feed testing laboratory complete the plant.

Is there a government subsidy for a bagasse feed block unit?

The National Livestock Mission offers a 50% capital subsidy, up to ₹50 lakh, for fodder value addition units that make hay, silage, total mixed ration or fodder blocks. AHIDF gives 3% interest subvention on term loans for animal feed plants. PMEGP covers projects up to ₹50 lakh. Eligibility and approval rest with the scheme agencies and the bank.

Is animal feed from bagasse a profitable business?

In our illustrative sample, a 31 MT per day plant earns a 22% return on investment in Year 3. It breaks even at 40% of capacity and pays back in about 3.7 years. Real profit depends on how cheaply you secure bagasse in the crushing season, oilcake prices and how close you are to fodder-short dairy areas.

Is the animal feed from bagasse project report PDF free, and can I use it for a bank loan?

The sample is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not based on a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and scheme.
