Builders, utilities, EPC contractors and solar developers all buy insulated cable, and that steady demand draws entrepreneurs to this sector. A wire and cable plant draws copper or aluminium conductors, strands them, and insulates and sheathes them with PVC, XLPE or rubber. A wire and cable plant consultant helps you decide which cables to make, how large to build and which approvals come first. NPCS supports that planning with technical and financial detail specific to your capacity and location.

Market Demand for Wire and Cable Plants in India

Cable demand follows construction and power spending, so it rises with housing, power transmission and distribution, data centres and renewables. Industry is concentrated in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Daman and Silvassa. Export potential is medium, and sales move with the construction cycle.

  • Electrical distributors and dealers
  • Builders and EPC contractors
  • Power utilities
  • OEMs
  • Solar EPCs

Cable Products You Can Make

Your first product should match the buyer you can reach. House wires suit dealers and builders, while armoured power cables suit utilities and EPC contractors. Submersible and solar DC cables serve agriculture and solar developers.

  • FR/FRLS/LSZH house wires
  • Flexible cables
  • LT/HT power cables (PVC/XLPE, armoured)
  • Control and instrumentation cables
  • Submersible pump cables
  • Solar DC cables
  • Aerial bunched cables

Wire and Cable Plant Process

The wire and cable plant process starts with drawing metal rod into fine conductors, which are annealed to soften them and then stranded or bunched. Insulation is extruded over the conductor, and XLPE cables are cross-linked afterwards. Cores are laid up, sheathed, armoured where needed, and printed.

Technology depends on the product: tandem extrusion lines for general cables, CCV lines for HT XLPE and electron-beam cross-linking for solar cables. Quality is controlled through conductor resistance, insulation resistance, spark and HV tests, and flame retardance checks under standards such as IS 694, IS 1554 and IS 7098.

Raw Materials and Machinery

Copper or aluminium rod is the main input and usually comes from domestic producers. PVC and XLPE compounds are sourced from domestic compounders, along with rubber compounds, armour wire or strip, fillers and drums. The machines that matter most are wire drawing machines, extruders, stranders and the HV test lab.

  • Wire drawing machines
  • Annealers
  • Bunchers and stranders
  • Extruders
  • Cooling troughs
  • Armouring and laying-up machines
  • Spark tester
  • HV test lab
  • Coilers and drum winders

Wire and Cable Plant Licence and Approvals

Start with the factory licence and your State Pollution Control Board consent to establish before construction. Cable plants are usually Green category, though wire drawing without pickling can be White. Next, apply for BIS certification, which is compulsory for PVC-insulated cables under IS 694. Utility and PSU vendor approvals follow, with type tests at CPRI or ERDA, and consent to operate comes before production.

Pollution categoryWire drawing without pickling: White (CPCB S.No. 105.3) or Green with heat treatment (105.2); insulation extrusion: Green (132), cable plants are usually Green

Choosing the Right Wire and Cable Plant Size

Plant size changes everything from the product list to the test facilities. Indicative capacity runs from about 1,000 to 30,000 TPA of metal, with land of roughly 2–10 acres and power of about 1–5 MW. Smaller units usually focus on house wires and flexible cables sold through dealers. Larger plants add HT power cables, CCV lines and a full HV test lab. Your project report works out the right scale for your budget and market.

Quality Standards and Certification for Cables

Buyers trust certified cable, and in this sector certification decides who gets orders. BIS marking is compulsory for PVC-insulated cables, and utilities ask for type test reports from CPRI or ERDA before approving a vendor. Plan an in-house test lab early, covering conductor resistance, insulation resistance and spark and HV tests. Budget the time for testing before you promise delivery dates to large buyers.

Government Schemes and Project Finance

Cable demand benefits from the power-distribution reform scheme (RDSS), housing programmes, solar projects and state incentives. These support your sales rather than fund the plant. For loans, NPCS reports are used for bank loans and government programmes such as PMEGP, MSME schemes, Mudra and NABARD-linked projects, subject to each lender's requirements.

What Decides Success in a Wire and Cable Plant

Good operators pass metal price changes on to buyers and never sell undersized conductors. They also build a brand and dealer network and keep BIS and type tests current. Scrap copper and PVC can be recycled, which cuts waste.

  • Copper and aluminium price volatility
  • Fake and undersized products in the market
  • Competition from big brands
  • Heavy working capital needs
