A ceramic tiles plant presses spray-dried clay bodies into wall, floor and vitrified tiles, then glazes, prints and fires them in roller kilns. Tile dealers, builders, national brands and exporters buy the output, which keeps the business tied to housing and replacement demand. A ceramic tiles plant consultant helps you size the unit, pick the technology and cost the gas supply before you commit capital. NPCS supports this with feasibility work, machinery guidance and a detailed project report.

Figures are indicative ranges. Your project report works them out for your capacity and location.

Market Demand for Ceramic Tiles in India

Tile demand in India follows housing, real estate and replacement of old flooring, with exports adding a second outlet. Production is concentrated in Morbi, Gujarat, India's largest tile cluster, with further capacity in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Karnataka. Sales dip in the monsoon and recover with the construction season, so your cash plan should allow for that.

  • Tile dealers and distributors
  • Builders and developers
  • National tile brands using contract manufacturing
  • Exporters to the Middle East, US, Europe and Africa

Tile Products You Can Make

Your range decides the press, kiln and finishing line you need. Plain ceramic wall and floor tiles suit a simpler start, while glazed and full-body vitrified tiles, large-format slabs and outdoor tiles need polishing and sizing lines and a higher investment.

  • Ceramic wall and floor tiles
  • Glazed vitrified (GVT, PGVT)
  • Double-charge and full-body vitrified
  • Large-format slabs
  • Outdoor/parking tiles

Ceramic Tiles Plant Process

The ceramic tiles plant process starts with batching clays, feldspar and quartz, which are wet ground in ball mills and spray dried into pressable powder. Hydraulic presses form the tile, and it is dried, glazed or digitally printed and fired in a roller kiln. Vitrified tiles then go through polishing and rectification before sorting and packing.

Quality is controlled at several points: body composition, pressed dimensions, firing and final sorting. Typical tests cover water absorption, breaking and flexural strength, abrasion resistance, dimensions and flatness, with IS 15622 as the voluntary reference. Technology choices include single-fired roller kilns, digital inkjet decoration, large-format presses and gas firing.

Raw Materials and Machinery for a Ceramic Tiles Plant

Ball clay and china clay mostly come from Gujarat and Rajasthan, and feldspar and quartz from Rajasthan. Glazes and frits are sourced domestically or imported, and natural gas is a major running input. Of the machines, the spray dryer, hydraulic presses, digital printers and roller kiln shape output and cost the most, so specify them carefully.

  • Ball mills
  • Spray dryer
  • Hydraulic presses
  • Dryers
  • Glaze line
  • Digital printers
  • Roller kiln
  • Polishing and sizing lines
  • Sorting and packing

Ceramic Tiles Plant Licence and Approvals

Approvals usually run in this order: business registration, factory licence, consent to establish from the State Pollution Control Board before construction, gas connection, then consent to operate. Pollution category depends on the kiln fuel, so confirm it early. No mandatory QCO has been identified, and IS 15622 is voluntary.

  • Coal or oil-fired kilns: Red if fuel is 12 TPD or more, Orange if below
  • Gas-fired or tunnel kiln: Orange
  • Electric kiln only: Green
  • Export registration with the relevant export promotion council
Pollution categoryCoal/oil-fired kilns: Red if fuel ≥12 TPD, Orange if <12 TPD (CPCB Jan-2025 Annexure-I S.No. 24.1–24.2); gas-fired or tunnel kiln: Orange (24.3); electric kiln only: Green (24.4)

Other licencesNatural gas connection (cluster rules shifted Morbi units off coal gasifiers); factory licence; export registration with the relevant export promotion council

Choosing the Right Ceramic Tiles Plant Size

Plant size changes almost every cost line. Capacity runs from about 5,000 to 30,000 sq m/day, land from about 10 to 30 acres and power from about 2 to 8 MW plus gas. Investment spans roughly ₹50–250 crore, excluding land. A smaller unit limits capital and suits a focused range, while a larger one spreads kiln and gas costs over more output but needs stronger sales channels.

Where to Set Up a Ceramic Tiles Plant

Morbi in Gujarat offers the deepest supplier and dealer network, but it also carries the most price competition. Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Karnataka are other options, and Rajasthan sits close to feldspar and quartz. Weigh clay freight, gas availability and distance from your main buyers before choosing a site. Cluster rules have also moved Morbi units off coal gasifiers.

Government Schemes and Project Finance for Tile Plants

State industrial incentives may apply to a new tile unit, and exporters can claim RoDTEP on shipments. Incentives vary by state, so check eligibility early. NPCS reports are used for bank loans and government programmes such as PMEGP, MSME schemes, Mudra and NABARD-linked projects, subject to each lender's requirements.

What Decides Success in a Ceramic Tiles Plant

Operators who do well control gas cost, offer a strong design range and secure brand or OEM tie-ups. Export certifications also open more buyers. Polishing sludge and fired waste are by-products, and broken tiles are partly recycled into the body.

  • Gas price volatility
  • Overcapacity and price wars in Morbi
  • Anti-dumping duties in some export markets
  • Working capital pressure

Ceramic Tiles Plant: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ceramic tiles plant setup cost in India?

An indicative investment is about ₹50–250 crore for a line from body preparation to packing, excluding land. The final figure depends on capacity, product range and kiln technology. A project report works out the cost for your plan.

Which licences and pollution category apply to a tile plant?

You need a factory licence, a gas connection and State Pollution Control Board consents. Gas-fired or tunnel kilns are Orange, coal or oil-fired kilns are Red or Orange by fuel quantity, and electric-only kilns are Green.

How much land and power does a tile plant need?

A plant typically needs about 10–30 acres and about 2–8 MW of power plus natural gas, depending on capacity. Water use is moderate and largely recycled from grinding and polishing.

How to start a ceramic tiles plant business?

Begin with a feasibility study covering product range, capacity, location and gas supply. Then finalise technology and machinery, secure approvals and finance, and build the plant. A detailed project report guides each of these steps.

How does NPCS help with a ceramic tiles project?

NPCS prepares the project report, feasibility study and market research, and guides machinery selection, vendor choice and layout. Our team also supports approvals planning and a bankable report for loan applications.
