Status of Maize Production

One of the staple crops of farmer households is maize. In mills for producing bread, historically, the grain is processed into flour. Immature cobs are roasted all over the world and consumed. It is an important raw material for processing units for animal and poultry feed and corn flakes.

The amount of maize used by these units, however, is reduced since the current units are small-scale in nature. They just produce a few goods that have minimal demand. Therefore, it is important to create an alternative large-scale unit that can process a large amount of maize for various value-added items.

In India, Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Kolkata are the major markets for processed maize products. Other important markets include Bhopal, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Bangalore etc. Most of the starch manufacturers of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, etc., have their marketing offices in Mumbai. Hence, Ahmedabad and Mumbai are the major trading centres for corn starch in India.
