Growth of Coconut and Coconut value-added Products in Market

 

Among plantation crops, coconut is the main crop grown under both plantation and property management systems. It is well known for its ability to provide livelihood safety to millions of people worldwide and provide better nutrition, employment, and income generation.

Nata de coco is usually made as a sweet or sweet dessert. However, it can also make pickles, drinks, ice cream, puddings, and fruit mixes—a white to a creamy yellow cellulosic substance formed by bacteria on the surface of sugar-rich coconut water. The countries with the highest coconut consumption in 2018 were Indonesia (19 million tonnes), the Philippines (14 million tonnes), and India (12 million tonnes), accounting for 72% of the world’s consumption. Sri Lanka, Brazil, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Mexico, and Thailand are slightly behind, accounting for an additional 16%.

 

Marketing view on Coconut and Coconut value-added Products

From 2007 to 2018, Vietnam achieved the most remarkable growth rate in coconut consumption among the major consuming countries, while other world leaders experienced milder growth rates.

In terms of value, India ($ 10 billion), the Philippines ($ 6.7 billion), and Indonesia ($ 4.5 billion) are the countries with the highest market value in 2018, with a 60% share of the total world market. These countries were followed by Sri Lanka, Brazil, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Vietnam, and Mexico, which accounted for an additional 20%.

The countries with the highest per capita coconut consumption in 2018 were Papua New Guinea (140 kg per capita), the Philippines (131 kg per capita), and Sri Lanka (124 kg per capita).

In 2018, about 61 million tonnes of coconut were produced worldwide. The previous year was stable. Overall, coconut production continues to show a relatively flat trend pattern. The most notable growth rate was recorded in 2012, an increase of 5.3% over the previous year. During the study, global coconut production peaked at 62 million tonnes in 2013. However, from 2014 to 2018, the show was unable to regain momentum. The overall negative trend for coconut production was mainly conditioned by the relatively flat trend pattern of the harvested area and the relatively flat trend pattern of yield numbers.

Due to rising prices of activated carbon in overseas markets, exports of coconut products from India are projected to exceed Rs 2 billion in the fiscal year 2019.

Indian Market on Coconut and Coconut value-added Products

By January, the country had exported 80,467 tonnes of activated carbon (equivalent to 1,123.64 rupees), and the export of the entire product was 1,812.55 rupees. The final figures have not been compiled, but the March value is set at Rs 2.1 billion.

Foreign portfolio investors’ commitment to cyclicality has yielded significant returns this year.
