“Green steel startups in India are emerging as powerful drivers of the country’s green steel revolution. As India moves toward steel decarbonization at the same time, startups, MSMEs, and innovators are finding massive opportunities in low-carbon steel manufacturing.
“You always heard about these gigantic, smoking factories with coal and pollutant emissions.” However. “Now it looks like a whole new changeover is taking place, with a shift towards low-carbon steel production, placing India squarely in a prominent position in the global steel map.
“It is as if it has come to a whole new awakening from a prolonged, long sleep. Really, it gives me a lot of hope for the future of our planet.
” This is from the Annual Report of the Ministry of Steel in 2024-25. “In December 2024, a Green steel startups in India Taxonomy was unveiled. Think of it or describe it simply as a ‘standard.’ As a result, No more uncertainty. All simply laid out.”

Numbers that blew me away:
- Production of Crude Steel:09 million tonnes in 2023-24. Therefore, it is gigantic resource in steel.
- Finished steel use:49 million tonnes from Apr-Dec 2024, growth of 11.4% from the same period last year. Consequently, Everyone is working hard.
- Finished steel imports: +22.7% at 7.42 mill. tonnages. However, relying on the outsiders for the fancy, green stuff.
- Big dream: 300 million tonnes of capacity by 2030-31. Imagine the employment, the R&D, and all that spins out. As a result, the economy will benefit.
It’s not just about checking the boxes. Moreover, It’s really exciting to have this opportunity for people like us. For example, Startups, small entrepreneurs, tech enthusiasts, and even newbies can join in. As a result, The green steel market is going to be a trillion-dollar market, and the Indian market is not sitting idle either. Ultimately, We are the ones at the forefront, and this feels really empowering.
Why the Green Steel Revolution Is Like Finding My Own Goldmine as a Startup
Imagine the Decade of Green Industrial Entrepreneurship: 2025–2035. Moreover, It’s a new age where “we will build something better.”
Here’s why I am excited:
- Status of a Steel Superpower India:
Being the second-largest steel producer in the world, we have a massive MSME sector that holds the entire thing together – from heavy machinery to scrap-based production. Once I visited a small supplier in Gujarat. It was a hive of activity. A large steel company expands the scope of innovations for thousands of people.
- Global Buyers Go Green:
Vehicles, real estate, aircraft, renewable energy, and construction contracts – all industries and companies are searching for partners and suppliers who take environmental issues seriously. As a result, “Green steel” has become non-negotiable, according to a friend of mine who works in this industry.
- A Clear Set of Rules with the Green Steel Taxonomy:
For the first time, there is a clear definition of “green.” As a result, No more wondering. That gives us the keys to green finance, carbon markets, and green subsidies and demand. It’s as though someone gave us the map in the maze.

- Spending on Steel:
Steel PSU spent ₹10,139 crores in 2023-24. Consequently, This is a boost in the demand for new approaches, coming from start-ups such as yours.
- Trade Imports for Homegrown Wins:
We are still importing higher-quality steel, scrap materials, and technology. However, Every dollar spent outside is one dollar that could employ people at home. Ouch, but it’s a spur to action—let’s build it at home.

Top 10 Startup Ideas for Green Steel – Dream Big, Together
These are in line with the India Green Steel startups in India Taxonomy. Therefore, These are the ideas that I have shortlisted, which appear feasible and have the potential to positively impact the environment and the bottom line.
(1).Hydrogen-Powered Direct Reduced Iron Technology:
Hydrogen is replacing coal in the manufacture of sponge iron, which is revolutionary in nature. Moreover, Sponge iron production in India stood at 51.35 million tons in the year 2023-24, the highest in the globe. Small changes add up. Ideas: green hydrogen modular electrolyze tech, storage solutions, catalysts, reactor automation, retrofits and consulting services. Maybe this will be the long-term hobby area as a result of the forthcoming availability of low-priced green hydrogen owing to the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
(2).Recycling Steel Scraps & Urban Mining:
Recycling has a reduced carbon emissions intensity that’s 60-80% less than producing steel from virgin materials. As a result, Demand is increasing due to scrappage policies; there’s a 8-10% annual requirement growth in steel scraps. Proposals: Automated recyclers, AI-based sorting machines, sensor-based shredders, recovering retired home & transportation appliances & waste. Easier start-up costs are appropriate for MSME groups.
(3).Renewable-Powered Mini Steel Mills:
Solar/Wind-Powered EAFs = Green Technology. Renewable solutions are booming – India adds 15-20 GW every year.
for example, Induction Furnace, Green Rolling Mill, set up smaller plants within regions producing TMT Bars and Rebars. Awesome application – Sustainable Housing and Road Building.
(4).Carbon Capture, Use, and Storage (CCUS) for Steel:
The emissions are part and parcel of the process, and CCUS technology should rectify this situation as per the Green Steel guidelines.
For example, low-cost capture installation, CO2 & methanol, bio-mineralization, MSME systems, or handling systems. Given the 200+ MSME steel plants, as a result, this is already scalable and required by the industry.
(5).Improving Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs) and Components:
The future is in EAFs. Let’s manufacture the components ourselves.
The components could be in these sectors:
- Graphite electrodes
- Furnace linings
- Ladle machines
- Oxygen machines
- Digital optimizers
(6).Smart Energy Efficiency and Digital Magic:
Steel accounts for 12% of the total industrial use of energy in India; Moreover, Steel is an area that needs optimization.
Ideas: optimizing the use of artificial intelligence in the furnace, heat recovery, predictive maintenance, IoT monitoring. There is an enormous base in the MSME sector for rolling mills.
(7).Eco-Friendly Fluxes, Binders, and Ingredients:
Cleaner ingredients result in cleaner emissions in the long run. It’s a long-term approach, such as with organic produce. “For example bio-based fluxes, binders with low emissions, and eco-chemicals. The iron ore production volume of 275 million tonnes per year is substantial itself
(8).Circular Economy Steel Products:
We used 111 million tonnes in nine months of this year. That is just incredible. Moreover, Recycled products are always in demand in the construction, vehicles, renewable sectors, and infrastructural development sectors.
Ideas: green certified, recycled steel. High pricing can be advantageous to the planet and to you.
(9).Steel Bits for Renewables:
The 500 GW of renewables in 2030 will require steel. Ultimately, Domestic production of wind turbines using steel gives me goose bumps.
Potential applications: solar mounting, tracking, towers, or hardware. Value-added demands: high strength.
(10).Green Logistics/Supply Chains:
It’s high time transport decarbonized. Concepts: electric vehicle transport, carbon tracking systems, sustainable packaging solutions are needed at the same time smart storage. It feels like the final piece of a complete puzzle.
Steel Legends Who Inspired Me
