Mineral: Project Opportunities in West Bengal

PROFILE:

A mineral is a naturally occurring solid chemical substance formed through biogeochemical processes, having characteristic chemical composition, highly ordered atomic structure, and specific physical properties. India is one of the world's most naturally endowed lands. India is home to numerous minerals which benefit the country economically. The minerals produced in India constitute one-quarter of the world's most popular mineral resources.

RESOURCES:

West Bengal stands third in the country in terms of mineral production. The state contributes about one-fifth to the total production of minerals in the country. Coal constitutes 99% of the minerals extracted in West Bengal; fireclay, china clay, limestone, copper, iron, wolfram, manganese and dolomite are mined in small quantities. There are good possibilities of obtaining mineral oil and natural gas in the areas near the Bay of Bengal.

West Bengal is the third largest state for coal production, accounting for about half of India's total. Lignite mined in Darjeeling is used to make briquettes. West Bengal ranks next to Bihar and Madhya Pradesh in production of fireclay. China clay used in the pottery, paper, textile, rubber and paint industries are unearthed at Mohammad Bazar in Birbhum and Mejia in Bankura. Limestone which is used in cement industry is mined in Bankura, Purulia, Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri. There are copper mines in Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. Small quantities of low quality iron-ore are mined in Bardhaman, Purulia, Birbhum and Darjeeling. There are manganese in the Jhargram region of Paschim Medinipur, Purulia and Bardhaman. The state’s production of dolomite comes from the Dooars region of Jalpaiguri.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Keeping pace with the liberalised Mineral Policy being adopted by the Government of India, Government of West Bengal has formulated its Mineral Policy in 2002. Among the basic objectives of the West Bengal Mineral Policy, 2002 following are worth mentioning:

1. To review the existing State monopolies over mineral exploration and wherever required, go in for selective de-reservation.

2. To invite private capital, resources and technology, both foreign and domestic, for better exploration and exploitation;

3. To promote necessary linkages for smooth and uninterrupted development of mineral based industries to meet the needs of the State.

4. To ensure proper vigilance and supervision of mining activities with particular emphasis on simplification of procedures and greater generation of revenues from mineral resources.

Iron and Steel: Project Opportunities in West Bengal

PROFILE:

India has one of the richest reserves of all the raw materials required for the industry, namely land, capital, cheap labour, iron ore, power, coal etc. Yet India is 5th in the world ranking for production of steel. Iron and steel is basis for laying the vibrant Indian industry. Production of steel has come to exist as an index of a country's potential, industrial and economic growth. The making of iron and steel had been known to the people of India since long. The iron pillar of Delhi is a proof of it and speaks of the quality of steel produced in this country in ancient times. The steel industry is often considered to be an indicator of economic progress, because of the critical role played by steel in infrastructural and overall economic development. The per capita usage of steel gives an indication of the technological advancement of a nation.

RESOURCES:

The growth of steel industry in the State is largely related to the proximity of raw materials, skilled manpower, port facilities and the vast market for steel products. Given these location advantages, large numbers of mini integrated steel plants have already been set up in the state manufacturing a wide range of products such as sponge irons, mild steels, iron pipes etc. The neighbouring Eastern States of India viz. Jharkhand, Orissa and Chattisgarh are endowed with huge iron ore reserves along with cooking coal and non-cooking coal. The establishment of Bengal Iron Works at Kulti in Burdwan district of West Bengal in 1870 where the first commercial blast furnace was set up in 1875 heralded the commencement of this industry in the State.

The easy availability of power, competitive rates of freight, close proximity to areas with natural resources relevant to the industry, and labour force traditionality skilled in operating iron and steel units are factors that have influenced the surge in investment in this sector.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Under the new industrial policy, iron and steel has been made one of the high priority industries. Price and distribution controls have been removed  as well as foreign direct investment up to 100% (under automatic route) has been permitted.  The Trade Policy has also been liberalized and import and export of iron and steel is freely allowed with no quantitative restrictions on import of iron and steel items. Tariffs on various items of iron and steel have drastically come down since 1991-92 levels and the government is committed to bring them down to the international levels.  With the abolishing of price regulation of iron and steel in 92, the steel prices are market determined. The policy devises a multi-pronged strategy to achieve these targets with following focus areas; removal of supply constraints especially availability  of critical inputs like iron ore; improve cost competitiveness by expanding and strengthening the infrastructure in roads, railways, ports and power; increase exports; meet the additional capital requirements by mobilizing financial resources; promote investments by removing  procedural delays. In addition the policy also addresses challenges arising out of environmental concerns, human resource requirements, R&D, volatile steel prices and the secondary sector.

Start Manufacturing Of Egg Shell Powder

Egg powder is made by completely drying out eggs through a process called dehydration, which turns them into a fine, shelf-stable powder. This product comes in multiple forms: whole egg powder, which is formed entirely of the yolks; egg white powder, which is made up of the albumen alone; and egg yolk powder, which is made up only of the yolks. The hard process of cleaning, drying, and grinding egg shells results in a fine, powdered material that is used to make egg shell powder. This product is a well-liked option for supporting bone health in humans because of its high calcium content and other important minerals. Its uses, however, go well beyond dietary supplements. Egg shell powder improves soil health and is a great fertilizer in the agricultural industry. To guarantee that dogs and animals get enough minerals, it is also added to animal feed. Furthermore, this powder's abrasive properties are used by the cosmetics sector to create a variety of products that include exfoliating treatments. Egg powder and egg shell powder are two creative approaches to reducing food waste and promoting food sustainability. These powders help to promote more ecologically friendly methods in food production and consumption by turning potentially waste materials into valuable commodities. They also give consumers a range of nutrient-dense and diverse options. As more people choose convenient and environmentally friendly options, their increasing popularity highlights a trend towards more practical and sustainable food sources. Production Method 1. Removal of Egg Shell Egg shell removal is the first stage in the procedure. Usually, automated devices that crack eggs and separate the yolks and whites from the shells are used for this. To avoid doing too much harm to the egg's contents, this should be done gently. This stage is essential since it guarantees that the egg will only be processed further on its edible portions. 2. Cleaning The egg contents are carefully cleaned after being extracted from the shells. This process is crucial for getting rid of any last bits of shell fragments, bacteria, or other impurities that might have been on the shell's surface. The sterilized solution used in the washing procedure is safe for use with food items and leaves the egg's flavor and nutritional content intact. 3. Pelletization (heating) The egg combination is pasteurized once it has been cleaned. The egg is rendered safe for food through the controlled heating process of pasteurization, which eliminates any bacteria or pathogens from the egg. This is an important step to ensure the safety of the egg powder, since eggs can carry bacteria like Salmonella. In order to maintain the maximum amount of nutritional value in the egg and guarantee its safety for consumption, the heating process is meticulously regulated. 4. Honing The egg mixture is dried after it has been pasteurized. Freeze-drying or spray-drying are two possible approaches for the drying process. When an egg is sprayed into a heated chamber for spray drying, the water rapidly evaporates, leaving behind tiny bits of solid egg. The egg combination is frozen and then put in a vacuum chamber to remove the water through sublimation in the process of freeze-drying. The end product is a fine, dry powder when it has dried. Next, the powder is milled to provide a uniform texture and particle size, which facilitates packaging and dissolution when required. 5. Presentation After that, the egg powder is sealed up in airtight, moisture-proof containers to keep it safe from contamination, humidity, and deterioration. When stored properly, the egg powder's shelf life can be extended by up to a year thanks to the packing technique. The powder's quality and nutritional value are maintained by the selection of the packing material and method. 6. Sale/Shop The egg powder has now been packaged and is ready to be stored or sold. Distributing it to retailers, wholesalers, or end users directly is one option. Until it is sold, the egg powder is kept in a dry, cool environment. For both customers and businesses, such as those in the food service sector, bakeries, and processed food industries, this product provides a practical, long-lasting substitute for fresh eggs. A complex process called "egg powder manufacturing" turns fresh eggs into a flexible, shelf-stable product. Egg powder is a valuable ingredient for many industrial and culinary uses because every stage of the process is created to guarantee the product's safety, quality, and nutritional content. Applications and Uses ? Powdered Egg The following are a few typical applications and uses for egg powder: • Preparing Food and Bake: An essential component of many baked goods, including cakes, cookies, meringues, and pastries, is egg powder. A Business Plan for Water Based Emulsion (Used as Coating for Paper Cups and Straws Replacing PE Coating)

A complex coating formulation known as a "water-based emulsion" is one in which polymer particles are dispersed in water as opposed to organic solvents. Using the natural solvent qualities of water, this method produces a consistent, stable combination that dries to form a strong, protective coating when applied to a surface. While the exact type of polymers utilized in these emulsions varies, they usually consist of acrylics, styrene-acrylics, and polyurethane dispersions, which are selected for their superior adhesive qualities and environmental friendliness. Water-based emulsion coatings work by evaporating water after it is applied to a substrate, like cardboard or paper. The polymer particles clump together when the water evaporates, creating a continuous coating that adheres to the substrate and creates a barrier that is resistant to moisture, oil, and grease at times. Producing packaging materials that are resilient and able to endure the demands of different food packaging applications requires the use of this method. Advantages Water-based emulsions provide a number of functional and environmental advantages when applied as coatings for paper straws and cups instead of polyethylene (PE) coatings. Here is a thorough examination of these benefits: ? Biodegradability and Compostability: Water-based emulsions can be made to be completely biodegradable and compostable, in contrast to PE coatings. This implies that paper goods covered in these emulsions can decompose organically, minimizing the amount of garbage that builds up in landfills and promoting a more environmentally friendly disposal procedure. ? Recyclability: Paper goods' ability to be recycled can be enhanced by water-based coatings. Paper straws and cups with PE coatings are difficult to recycle since the plastic coating needs to be removed from the paper, which is frequently an expensive procedure. Water-based emulsions, on the other hand, can be made to decompose more readily during the recycling of paper, making it possible to recover and reuse the paper fibers. ? Less Environmental Impact: Compared to PE coatings, the manufacture and application of water-based emulsions usually have less of an environmental impact. During application and production, they release fewer volatile organic compounds (VOCs), improving air quality and lowering health hazards for employees in manufacturing facilities. ? Safety and Non-Toxicity: In general, human health is better protected by water-based emulsions. They are safe to use in food packaging applications because they are made of water and naturally produced polymers. This is especially crucial for items that come into direct touch with food and beverages, such paper straws and cups. ? Performance and Functionality: New developments in water-based technology have produced emulsions that function as well as or better than conventional PE coatings. Paper straws and cups may be kept functional and intact while usage with their superior barrier qualities against water, oil, and grease. ? Energy Efficiency: Compared to PE coatings, the application process for water-based coatings may be more energy-efficient. Lower application temperatures for water-based emulsions cut down on the energy needed for drying and curing, lowering production costs overall and leaving less of a carbon imprint. ? Application Flexibility: Water-based coatings allow for a range of application techniques, such as rolling, brushing, and spraying, which provides manufacturing process flexibility. This flexibility can result in increased manufacturing efficiency and the capacity to coat a range of paper goods with various dimensions and forms. ? Improved Aesthetics: Paper straws and mugs can also look better thanks to water-based coatings. Depending on the intended look, they can offer a glossy or matte finish. They can also enhance printability, making it possible to print brilliant and long-lasting graphics on coated paper products. An encouraging substitute for conventional PE coatings on paper straws and cups is the application of water-based emulsions. These advantages provide a workable way to lessen the environmental impact of disposable paper products and are in line with the growing customer desire for more ecologically friendly and sustainable packaging options.
