What is a peanut butter project report?

A peanut butter project report is a detailed project report (DPR) for a unit that roasts, blanches and grinds groundnut kernels into a spread. It covers the process, machinery, raw materials, licences, project cost, means of finance, five-year projections, DSCR and break-even that a bank checks before funding.

First-time founders use it for a term loan, PMEGP or PMFME application; snack and spice units use it to add a spread line, and lenders use it to test repayment.

Also known as: peanut butter business plan, project report on peanut butter, DPR for peanut butter plant, groundnut butter project report.

What a bank checks in a peanut butter project report

A credit officer reads a peanut butter report for four numbers: how much of each rupee of sales goes on groundnuts, how much on jars, and whether cash covers the loan instalments. These are the values in our sample report.

50.5%Raw material share of sales

Peanut butter is mostly roasted kernel. A report that shows a much lower share is usually pricing groundnuts below the market or overstating yield.

86%Groundnut kernel share of raw material cost

Sugar, stabiliser and salt are small. The kernel price moves with each crop, so the bank expects the effect of a price rise to be tested.

8.9%Packing share of sales

Jars, caps, induction seals and labels are a real cost for a spread. Smaller packs raise this share, so the pack mix must match the sales plan.

1.63Average DSCR

DSCR (debt service coverage ratio) is cash available for the loan divided by the instalments due. The sample's lowest year is 1.42.

Values are the assumptions in our illustrative sample. Your report uses figures for your capacity, suppliers and market.

Peanut butter manufacturing process

Most of the quality is decided before grinding. Roast colour sets the flavour, and sorting out bad kernels is the main control on aflatoxin, a toxin produced by moulds on groundnuts.

  1. Cleaning and grading

Kernels are cleaned of stones and dust, and only bold, sound kernels go forward; small and broken kernels roast unevenly.

  2. Roasting

Kernels are dry roasted at about 160°C for 40–60 minutes, bringing moisture down to about 1%.

  3. Cooling and blanching

Hot kernels are cooled fast to stop the roast, then a dry blancher rubs off the red skin and splits each kernel in two.

  4. Sorting

Workers on an inspection belt pick out dark, shrivelled and mouldy kernels, which carry most of the aflatoxin and bitter taste.

  5. Two-stage grinding

A colloid mill first breaks kernels into grits and then grinds them to a fine paste; crunchy variants get chopped kernel pieces added back.

  6. Mixing

Sugar, salt and a vegetable oil stabiliser are blended into the warm paste so the oil does not separate on the shelf.

  7. De-aeration and cooling

Air is drawn out under vacuum to slow rancidity, and the paste is cooled so the stabiliser sets evenly.

  8. Filling and sealing

Paste is filled into PET or glass jars, induction sealed, capped, labelled and coded by batch.

Raw materials for peanut butter

Groundnut kernels are bought from shellers and traders, mostly from the main kharif crop harvested in autumn. The sample holds 15 days of raw material stock; a unit that buys a season's kernels at harvest needs a larger working capital limit and cool, dry storage.

Who buys peanut butter, and where a new unit fits

Peanut butter has moved from an imported jar to a regular breakfast and gym food in Indian cities. Supermarkets, quick-commerce apps and online stores carry it, and national brands hold most shelf space.

A new unit rarely wins on shelf presence alone. It competes on freshness, price per kg and variants such as crunchy, unsweetened, jaggery or high-protein, and it often fills spare capacity by making for other brands.

  • Distributors and supermarket chains
  • Quick-commerce and online sellers
  • Gyms and health food stores
  • Bakeries and confectionery makers using paste as filling
  • Brands that outsource production under private label
  • Hotels, cafes and caterers buying bulk packs

Private label is steady volume: brands that outsource production need a licensed plant that passes their audits. Contract orders can keep the colloid mill running while your own brand grows.

FSSAI licence and approvals for peanut butter

Business registrationUdyam (MSME) registration and GST registration
FSSAI registration or licenceBasic registration up to 100 kg a day or ₹12 lakh turnover; state licence for larger units up to 2 MT a day; central licence above 2 MT a day. The 810 kg per day sample needs a state licence.
FSSAI product standardMoisture not more than 3.0%, fat not less than 40% and protein not less than 25% (dry basis), salt not more than 2%, and no argemone oil
Packaged goodsRegistration as a packer under Rule 27 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, with declarations on every jar
GSTGroundnut preparations fall under heading 2008, listed at 5% in the GST rate notification of 17 September 2025. Confirm the 8-digit HSN code with your CA.
Pollution and factoryConsent to establish and operate from the State Pollution Control Board, and a factory licence where worker and power thresholds apply; rules vary by state

Rules checked October 2026 from the official sources listed below. They change, so confirm before you apply.

Loans and subsidy schemes for a peanut butter unit

PMEGP

New manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh

Margin-money subsidy of 15–35% of project cost, depending on category and rural or urban location. Suits a small unit.

PMFME

35% subsidy, up to ₹10 lakh per unit

Credit-linked capital subsidy for eligible micro food processing enterprises. Check eligibility with your bank.

Bank term loan and cash credit

Units above scheme limits

The sample plant takes a term loan of ₹111.43 lakh (75% of cost) and a cash credit limit of ₹16.04 lakh.

Scheme limits change. Confirm current terms with the bank or the scheme portal before applying.

Mistakes that weaken a peanut butter project report

  • Pricing at the jar's MRP

Distributors and platforms buy well below MRP. The sample uses an ex-factory price of ₹192 per kg; using retail prices inflates sales and DSCR.

  • Ignoring roasting and blanching loss

Moisture, skins and rejected kernels mean you buy more kernels than you sell as paste. Output must be worked out after these losses.

  • No budget for aflatoxin testing

Retail chains and private-label buyers ask for test results per batch. One bad kernel lot can mean a rejected order.

  • Under-costing jars and labels

Packing is 8.9% of sales in the sample. Planning many 200–350 g packs pushes it higher and must show in the projections.

  • Skipping shelf-life trials

Oil separation and rancid taste cause returns. Stabiliser dose and de-aeration need trial batches before you commit to a buyer.

Peanut Butter project report: frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to start a peanut butter manufacturing plant in India?

A small unit making 150–300 kg a day in a rented shed needs roughly ₹20–45 lakh, and a 400–600 kg per day unit about ₹60–110 lakh. Our sample report models an 810 kg per day plant with its own land and building at ₹148.57 lakh. These are indicative figures; your report works out the cost for your capacity, site and machine make.

Which machines are needed to make peanut butter?

The core line is a groundnut roaster, a cooling conveyor and dry blancher to remove the skins, a sorting belt and a colloid mill that grinds kernels to paste. After that come a jacketed mixing tank, a vacuum de-aeration tank and a jar filling and sealing line. In our sample report the roaster is the costliest machine at ₹16.74 lakh.

Is peanut butter manufacturing profitable?

In our illustrative sample, an 810 kg per day unit earns a net profit of ₹27 lakh on sales of ₹327 lakh in Year 3. Return on investment is 18% and break-even comes at 46% of capacity. Margins depend mostly on the groundnut kernel price, jar cost and how much you sell under your own brand versus private label.

Which FSSAI licence is needed for a peanut butter unit?

It depends on daily output. FSSAI basic registration covers units making up to 100 kg a day or with turnover up to ₹12 lakh. A state licence covers larger units up to 2 MT a day, and a central licence applies above that. The product must also meet the FSSAI standard for peanut butter on moisture, fat, protein and salt.

Can I get a PMEGP or PMFME loan for peanut butter making?

Yes, if the project fits the scheme. PMEGP funds new manufacturing projects up to ₹50 lakh with a margin-money subsidy of 15–35% of project cost. PMFME gives micro food processing units a 35% credit-linked subsidy, capped at ₹10 lakh per unit. Both need a project report with projections and DSCR, and limits change, so confirm with your bank.

Peanut butter ka business kaise shuru kare?

Start by choosing your capacity and whether you will sell under your own brand or make for other brands. Then arrange a shed, buy a roaster, blancher, colloid mill and filling machine, take Udyam, GST and FSSAI registration, and get a project report for the bank loan. Test a few batches for taste, oil separation and shelf life before launching.

Is the peanut butter project report PDF free, and can I use it for a loan?

The sample PDF is free to view and download. It is an illustrative report that shows the format and depth of an NPCS report. Its figures are representative and not from a real project, so it should not be submitted to a bank. For a loan, NPCS prepares a report for your own capacity, location and loan scheme.
