The paper industry has an important social role to play for the country. Use of paper is considered as an index of cultural growth. The paper industry is also contributing towards fulfillment of various requirements of the industry as a whole like information dissemination, publicity etc. which in turn stimulate industrial growth of the country. The paper industry has, thus, a catalytic role to play not only for the overall growth of the industry but also for the living standards of the people.

The primary products sector include manufacturing pulps from wood and other cellulose fibers, and from rags; the manufacture of paper and paperboard; and the manufacture of paper and paperboard into converted products, such as paper coated off the paper machine, paper bags, paper boxes, and envelopes and other  commodity grades of wood pulp, printing and writing papers, sanitary tissue, industrial-type papers, containerboard, and boxboard.

In the last few years, India’s paper industry has grown by 6 per cent annually. In the coming years, this growth rate will go up to 10 per cent because of huge spurt in demand for writing and printing paper. The domestic demand for paper is set to far surpass supply, with the growing emphasis on education and alternative uses of paper. The demand for upstream market of paper products, like, tissue paper, tea bags, filter paper, light weight online coated paper, medical grade coated paper, etc.,  is growing up. These developments are expected to give fillip to the industry. Improvement of key ports, roads and railways and communication facilities will help the entire industrial sector including pulp & paper.

India’s paper industry is worth Rs 225 billion. It accounts for about 1.6 per cent of the world’s production of paper and paperboard. In India, the demand for paper is set to far surpass supply and is expected to reach the level of 110 lakh tones by 2015 from 72 lakh tones in 2007. It is said that if the gross domestic product (GDP) grows at 10 per cent, paper demand will grow at 8 per cent. The per capita consumption of paper in India is barely 8 kg. Paper consumption is poised for a big leap forward in sync with the economic growth.

About 38 per cent of the total demand comes from culture paper (creamwave), while 58 per cent arises out of the industrial paper sector. The rest 4 per cent comes from speciality paper including coated paper, tissues, posters, one-time carbon (OTC), cheques, drafts, etc.

The country’s paper industry, with an existing production capacity of 90 lakh tones, requires an additional $2 billion of investment to meet the rising demand.  The capacity is likely to increase to 112 lakh tones per annum by 2010.The share of wood as raw materials has declined from 84 per cent to 36 per cent since 1970.On the other hand, the share of agro and waste paper has increased from 9 and 7 to 29 and 35 per cent, respectively. Of course, the share of recycled paper would go up in the future. The government is drawing up a new scheme for technological upgradation and modernization of paper mills.

Paper, Pulp and Paperboard Production from Bamboo

Paper, Pulp and Paperboard Production from Bamboo. Profitable Bamboo Processing Industry Bamboo is a quickly renewable resource. Bamboo is the single fastest growing species of plant on the planet with some species growing more than a meter a day. In sharp contrast to trees which require decades to recover from harvesting, bamboo reaches maturity in 3 to 5 years or less and when it is cut, the stem is left in the soil to sprout a new shoot and start the growing process again. Paper has been made from bamboo for hundreds of years. The commercial process uses actual bamboo canes for pulp. Bamboo paper is attracting the attention of companies and individuals looking for eco-friendly printing and sustainability. Despite the digital revolution, the demand for paper is growing globally. The bamboo pulp is one kind of paper pulp like wood pulp, straw pulp or reed pulp. The bamboo pulp is usually made from moso bamboo, phyllostachys pubescens and sinocalamus affinis by sulfate digestion process or soda process. The bamboo fiber morphology and length is intermediate between wood fiber and straw fiber. Bamboo pulp can be made into bamboo paper. Bamboo paper is strong and it has wide applications. The bleached bamboo paper is used to manufacture offset paper, typing paper and high-grade culture paper. The unbleached bamboo paper is generally applied to package papermaking. Besides, bamboo pulp and wood pulp can be mixed and used to make cable paper, insulation paper, and cement bag paper. Bamboo pulp is a kind of paper pulp. It is made from the moso bamboo, phyllostachys pubescens and sinocalamus affinisetc, with the sulfate digestion processand soda process. There are also tender bamboo green, lime pickled into half-clinker. Fiber form and length, between wood and grass fiber. Easy sizing, bamboo pulp for medium fiber length pulp, fine and soft. The thickness of pulp is loose, the tear is high, and the breaking strength and tensile strength are low. High mechanical strength. Paper made of bamboo pulp, bleached for making offset printing paper, typing paper and other advanced cultural paper, unbleached paper for making wrapping paper, etc. Market Outlook The pulp and paper industry is a large and growing portion of the world’s economy. Most of the pulp and paper mills are located near the major waterways and have an access to a large, uninterrupted supply of water. After using the water for pulp and paper production, these mills discharge the used water into the waterways as waste. The pulp and paper industry is faced with mounting environmental, political, and economic pressures to reduce the volume and toxicity of its industrial wastewater. The overall demand for paper, growing annually at 6.7 per cent, is expected to touch 20.8 million tonne in the country in fiscal year 2020-21, driven by rising income levels, growing per capita expenditure and rapid urbanization. The Indian paper industry accounts for about 3.7% of the world’s production of paper. The estimated turnover of the industry is INR 60,000 crore (USD 8.5 billion approximately) and its contribution to the exchequer is around INR 4,500 crore. The industry provides employment to more than 0.5 million people directly and 1.5 million people indirectly. India is the fastest growing market for paper globally and it presents an exciting scenario; paper consumption is poised for a big leap forward in sync with the economic growth. The futuristic view is that growth in paper consumption would be in multiples of GDP and hence an increase in consumption by one kg per capita would lead to an increase in demand of 1 million tonnes. The demand is projected to boost to 23.5 million tonnes by 2024- 25. India is the greatest growing market for paper in the world with a growth rate of about 6 percent yearly. The increase of per capita paper utilization by one kg will raise the demand by about 1.25 million tonnes per annum. Indian paper industry can be majorly classified further as below: • Newsprints: Newsprint serves the newspaper & magazines industry. This segment forms ~15% of the domestic paper industry. • Writing and Printing Paper: Printing and writing segment caters to office stationary, textbooks, copier papers, notebooks etc. This segment forms ~30% of domestic paper industry. • Packaging Boards: Packaging paper & board segment caters to tertiary and flexible packaging purposes in industries such as FMCG, food, pharma, textiles etc. This segment forms ~51% of the domestic paper industry. This is amongst fastest growing segment after Tissue owing to factors such as rising urbanization, increasing penetration of organized retail, higher growth in FMCG, pharmaceutical. • Tissue: Tissue paper is majorly used as paper handkerchiefs for facial & toilet purpose. Currently due to its low base and increasing hygiene awareness, this segment witnessed fastest growth. India produces many varieties of papers, namely, printing and writing paper, packaging paper, coated paper and some speciality paper. A4 and A3 Size Paper

Paper is often characterized by weight. In the United States, the weight assigned to a paper is the weight of a ream, 500 sheets, of varying "basic sizes", before the paper is cut into the size it is sold to end customers. For example, a ream of 20 lb, 8.5 in × 11 in (216 mm × 279 mm) paper weighs 5 pounds, because it has been cut from a larger sheet into four pieces. In the United States, printing paper is generally 20 lb, 24 lb, or 32 lb at most. Cover stock is generally 68 lb, and 110 lb or more is considered card stock. In Europe, and other regions using the ISO 216 paper sizing system, the weight is expressed in grammes per square metre (g/m2 or usually just g) of the paper. Printing paper is generally between 60 g and 120 g. Anything heavier than 160 g is considered card. The weight of a ream therefore depends on the dimensions of the paper and its thickness. These are normal printer papers commonly referred to as copy paper. They are used to print documents in which there is no or little use of graphics. They certainly do not support high res image printing. A4 is not only used as printing stationery in printer or copier from output of a page on computer. It is also used as international size for all sort of documents, like letters, forms, bit notice, posters, catalogues, magazines, In Engineering A4 size paper is the mostly used as hard copy of drawing or document in a handy way. Most commercial paper sold in North America is cut to standard paper sizes based on customary units and is defined by the length and width of a sheet of paper. The global cut size uncoated freesheet paper market was valued at $16,122.3 million in 2017 and is projected to reach $18,483.6 million by 2023, witnessing a CAGR of 2.4% during the forecast period. Kraft Paper

Kraft paper is paper produced from chemical pulp produced in the kraft process. Sack kraft paper, or just sack paper, is a porous kraft paper with high elasticity and high tear resistance, designed for packaging products with high demands for strength and durability. Pulp produced by the kraft process is stronger than that made by other pulping processes; acidic sulfite processes degrade cellulose more, leading to weaker fibers, and mechanical pulping processes leave most of the lignin with the fibers, whereas kraft pulping removes most of the lignin present originally in the wood. Paper is one of the core industries and is linked to the basic human needs. Paper is the pre-requisite for education and literacy and its use is an index of advancement in these two fields as well as the overall well-being of the society. Paper and paper board can be manufactured by using different types of raw materials. Raw materials account for 45-50 per cent of the total cost of production and form an important segment of manufacturing paper and paper board. Of the total installed capacity, 43 per cent is dependent on forest based raw materials, 28 per cent on agro based raw materials and the remaining 29 per cent on other materials including waste paper. Indian Paper Industry which is over 100 years old, was saddled with many constraints, not of its own making, which have prevented it from growing to its full stature. Of late, due to spurt in demand for paper in the context of availability of good raw materials modernization efforts are being undertaken. Profitable margins being good, it has shown good signs of progress. Paper is designated as a core industry. India’s per capita consumption is a meagre 2.9 kg against 334 kg in U.S., 224 kg in Japan and 134 kg in Taiwan. Even within the Asian bloc, China has an impressive 12 kg per capita; the Philippines 8.5 kg and Thailand 17 kg, Malaysia (31), Korea (80), New Zealand (150), Singapore (80), Hong Kong (140), Australia (150) are other countries in the Asia-Pacific region which are significantly ahead in paper consumption. The world consumption of paper and paperboard is estimated at over 300 mntonne a year. It is constituted broadly of 30% of cultural papers (writing and printing), 14% of newsprint, and the balance of kraft and packaging paper including paperboards. The Indian production is about 2 to 3% of the global total. The overall value of the market is estimated at Rs. 250 bn. In volume terms, the segment is presently estimated at over 6.9 mntonne. In India, the cultural varieties account for over 40% of the production and speciality papers including coated papers for about 8%. This leaves about less than half for kraft and boards if the newsprint varieties are excluded. The newsprint takes over a mntonne or about 15% of the total. The present demand is estimated at 13.1 million tonnes with domestic production of 11.4 million tonnes, export of 0.5 million tonnes and import of 2.2 million tonnes. The demand is projected to boost to 23.5 million tonnes by 2024- 25. India is the greatest growing market for paper in the world with a growth rate of about 6 percent yearly. The increase of per capita paper utilization by one kg will raise the demand by about 1.25 million tonnes per annum. India has become self-sufficient in paper except for special varieties such as high quality bond paper and newsprint. The industry has progressed in the sense that dependence on wood-based raw material has come down to approximately 40%. Bagasse (about 33%) and waste paper (over 27%) now constitute more than 60% of the raw material base. Thus, the overall market prospectus for paper products appears to be good and the demand for industrial paper is expected to grow at faster rate than general paper industries growth. A Greenfield project based on wood pulp with a capacity of 100,000 tonne is estimated to require about Rs. 10 bn of capital expenditure. The paper industry depends on farmers for sourcing raw materials, and requires about 2 MN ha from the countries 32 MN hectares of degraded forests. The real worry to domestic production is that 70% of global recycled paper is being shipped in by Chinese companies. Few Indian major players are as under Achal Paper Inds. Ltd.
