Export Oriented Units, Projects (100% EOU)

The Export Oriented Unit (EOU) Scheme, which had been introduced in the early 1980s remains in the forefront of country’s export production schemes. The main objectives of the EOU scheme is to increase exports, earn foreign exchange to the country, transfer of latest technologies stimulate direct foreign investment and to generate additional employment. The scheme has witnessed many changes over the last twenty-four years in the context of ever changing economic realities. However, the basic premise remains the same. This premise is that the exporters are treated as a special class and given the required tariff, non-tariff and policy support to facilitate their export efforts. Thus, today the EOU Scheme has emerged as a dynamic policy initiative facilitating the exporting community in the task of increased exports. The EXIM Policy, 2002-07 reinforces the importance of Scheme in chapter 6 of the policy. Appendix 14 I of the Handbook of procedures (Vol.1) as amended upto 28- 1-2004 sets out the procedures and benefits of this scheme.

The 100% EOUs fall into 3 categories:

(a) EOUs established anywhere in India and exporting 100% products except certain fixed percentage of sales in the Domestic Tariff Area (DTA) as may be permissible under the Policy.

(b) Units in Free Trade Zones in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and exporting 100% of their products.

(c) EOUs set up in Software Technology Parks (STPs) and Electronic Hardware Technology Parks (EHTPs) of India for development of Software & Electronic Hardware.

To set up an EOU for the following sectors, an EOU owner needs a special license. EOUs can be set up anywhere in the country and may be engaged in the manufacture and production of software, floriculture, horticulture, agriculture, aquaculture, animal husbandry, pisciculture, poultry and sericulture or other similar activities. Apart from local zonal office and state government, setting up of an EOU is also strictly guided by the environmental rules and regulations.

Essential oils, also called volatile odoriferous oil, are aromatic oily liquids extracted from different parts of plants, for example, leaves, peels, barks, flowers, buds, seeds, and so on. Lemongrass is an herb that belongs to the grass family of Poaceae. Lemongrass is also known by Cymbopogon; it is a genus of about 55 species of grasses. Citronella oil is steam distilled from the leafy parts of the citronella plant, also known as Cymbopogonnardus. Spices (Turmeric, Chilli & Masala Powder)

Spices are non-leafy parts (e.g. bud, fruit, seed, bark, rhizome, bulb) of plants used as a flavoring or seasoning, although many can also be used as a herbal medicine. A closely related term, ‘herb’, is used to distinguish plant parts finding the same uses but derived from leafy or soft flowering parts. The two terms may be used for the same plants in which the fresh leaves are used as herbs, while other dried parts are used as spices, e.g. coriander, dill. There are a large number of various spices, used along with food such as pepper, chill, cardamom, cinnamon, mustard, cloves, ginger, turmeric, coriander etc. These spices give taste to the prepared food and at the same time give attractive colours and smell to the food. So the usage of some or all of these spices during cooking is now became an unavoidable one. The quantity of a particular spice added to the food during cooking is depends upon the taste of the user. Major importers of Indian spices in FY 2015-16 were US, China, Vietnam, UAE, Indonesia, Malaysia, UK, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, and Germany. Worldwide, food trends are changing with a marked health orientation. Since organic foods are free from chemical contaminants, the demand for these products should steadily increase in the new millennium. Organic cultivation is nothing new to India. Curcumin Extraction Unit

Curcumin is the main biologically active phytochemical compound of Turmeric. Molecular chemical formula of Curcumin: C21H20O6. Banana Wafers

Fried banana wafers are a deep fried snack food prepared from green fresh mature bananas of the cooking variety. Success in deep-fat frying of snack foods depends upon several factors, such as (a) the use of proper raw material of optimum maturity or quality, (b) correct method of preparation, (c) use of suitable equipment, (d) selection of appropriate fat or oil as frying medium, (e) optimum time and temperature of frying, (f) efficient packaging, and (g) proper storage. Though consumption of these products is at present very high there is no systematic quality control. The formulation of this standard is intended to assist in the manufacture and sale of standardized, nutritious, safer and more hygienically processed products. Fried banana wafers are prepared by peeling and slicing fully matured but unripe bananas and deep-fat frying the slices in suitable edible oil or fat, or combinations thereof. The bananas are sliced breadth wise to give thin circles that are dropped straight into the frying medium held at proper temperature for a time to render them crisp. Salt and other seasonings are added after frying. When coconut oil is used, antioxidants are not found useful. India is the largest producer of banana in the world and about 90% of banana produced is consumed domestically as fresh fruit. Merely 5% is consumed in processed form providing a good potential for future processing. About 2.5% is only processed purely as banana products and the rest as an ingredient in other foods. About 17 varieties of products could be made from banana. The primary product of banana in market is “fried wafers and candy” which constitute around 31%, rest as banana puree 9%, banana pulp 3%, banana beer 3%, banana wafers 3%, banana powder 6% and others.
