Mineral: Project Opportunities in West Bengal

PROFILE:

A mineral is a naturally occurring solid chemical substance formed through biogeochemical processes, having characteristic chemical composition, highly ordered atomic structure, and specific physical properties. India is one of the world's most naturally endowed lands. India is home to numerous minerals which benefit the country economically. The minerals produced in India constitute one-quarter of the world's most popular mineral resources.

RESOURCES:

West Bengal stands third in the country in terms of mineral production. The state contributes about one-fifth to the total production of minerals in the country. Coal constitutes 99% of the minerals extracted in West Bengal; fireclay, china clay, limestone, copper, iron, wolfram, manganese and dolomite are mined in small quantities. There are good possibilities of obtaining mineral oil and natural gas in the areas near the Bay of Bengal.

West Bengal is the third largest state for coal production, accounting for about half of India's total. Lignite mined in Darjeeling is used to make briquettes. West Bengal ranks next to Bihar and Madhya Pradesh in production of fireclay. China clay used in the pottery, paper, textile, rubber and paint industries are unearthed at Mohammad Bazar in Birbhum and Mejia in Bankura. Limestone which is used in cement industry is mined in Bankura, Purulia, Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri. There are copper mines in Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. Small quantities of low quality iron-ore are mined in Bardhaman, Purulia, Birbhum and Darjeeling. There are manganese in the Jhargram region of Paschim Medinipur, Purulia and Bardhaman. The state’s production of dolomite comes from the Dooars region of Jalpaiguri.

Iron and Steel: Project Opportunities in West Bengal

PROFILE:

India has one of the richest reserves of all the raw materials required for the industry, namely land, capital, cheap labour, iron ore, power, coal etc. Yet India is 5th in the world ranking for production of steel. Iron and steel is basis for laying the vibrant Indian industry. Production of steel has come to exist as an index of a country's potential, industrial and economic growth. The making of iron and steel had been known to the people of India since long. The iron pillar of Delhi is a proof of it and speaks of the quality of steel produced in this country in ancient times. The steel industry is often considered to be an indicator of economic progress, because of the critical role played by steel in infrastructural and overall economic development. The per capita usage of steel gives an indication of the technological advancement of a nation.

RESOURCES:

The growth of steel industry in the State is largely related to the proximity of raw materials, skilled manpower, port facilities and the vast market for steel products. Given these location advantages, large numbers of mini integrated steel plants have already been set up in the state manufacturing a wide range of products such as sponge irons, mild steels, iron pipes etc. The neighbouring Eastern States of India viz. Jharkhand, Orissa and Chattisgarh are endowed with huge iron ore reserves along with cooking coal and non-cooking coal. The establishment of Bengal Iron Works at Kulti in Burdwan district of West Bengal in 1870 where the first commercial blast furnace was set up in 1875 heralded the commencement of this industry in the State.

The easy availability of power, competitive rates of freight, close proximity to areas with natural resources relevant to the industry, and labour force traditionality skilled in operating iron and steel units are factors that have influenced the surge in investment in this sector.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Under the new industrial policy, iron and steel has been made one of the high priority industries. Price and distribution controls have been removed  as well as foreign direct investment up to 100% (under automatic route) has been permitted.  The Trade Policy has also been liberalized and import and export of iron and steel is freely allowed with no quantitative restrictions on import of iron and steel items. Tariffs on various items of iron and steel have drastically come down since 1991-92 levels and the government is committed to bring them down to the international levels.  With the abolishing of price regulation of iron and steel in 92, the steel prices are market determined. The policy devises a multi-pronged strategy to achieve these targets with following focus areas; removal of supply constraints especially availability  of critical inputs like iron ore; improve cost competitiveness by expanding and strengthening the infrastructure in roads, railways, ports and power; increase exports; meet the additional capital requirements by mobilizing financial resources; promote investments by removing  procedural delays. In addition the policy also addresses challenges arising out of environmental concerns, human resource requirements, R&D, volatile steel prices and the secondary sector.

Start Latex Rubber Thread Manufacturing Plant

A sort of elastic material created from either natural rubber or synthetic latex is known as latex rubber thread, also known as elastic thread. It is largely employed in the textile industry to produce stretchy materials for lingerie, bra straps, and elastic waistbands. Once the tension is released, the thread can easily snap back into shape after stretching up to several times its original length. A cotton or polyester core is coated with a rubber or latex solution during manufacture, creating a stretchy, flexible thread that is strong and light. The Manufacturing Process 1. Harvesting: Rubber trees are harvested for their natural latex by cutting tiny slits in their bark, then collecting the latex that seeps out. 2. Coagulation: After the collected latex has been exposed to coagulating chemicals like formic acid or acetic acid, the rubber particles coagulate and solidify into a mass. 3. Washing and Cleaning: To get rid of any impurities and extra water, the coagulated rubber is next washed and cleaned. 4. Mastication: After being well cleaned, the rubber is then put through a masticator, which reduces it to little bits and softens it. 5. Extrusion: The rubber is shaped into a long, cylindrical form by being fed through an extruder machine once it has been softened. 6. Dipping: After being extruded, the rubber is next submerged in a coagulating liquid, where it solidifies and forms a thin layer on the outside. 7. Vulcanization: To vulcanize the rubber and make it more resilient and elastic, the dipped rubber is then put in an oven and heated to a high temperature. 8. Rolling: Following vulcanization, the rubber is stretched and shaped into a thin, continuous thread by a series of rolling machines. 9. Packaging: To facilitate shipment and distribution, the completed latex rubber thread is wrapped onto spools or cones and packed. In order to create a high-quality, long-lasting product, the manufacture of latex rubber thread entails a number of stages and specialised equipment. The resulting thread's flexibility, toughness, and adaptability make it popular across a variety of sectors. A Business Plan For Activated Carbon from Coconut Shell

Coconut shell activated carbon is a naturally occurring kind of activated carbon that is obtained from the coconut shell. It is a porous, dark substance that is employed in the purification of water, air, and other substances to eliminate pollutants, poisons, and contaminants. The excellent adsorption capabilities of activated carbon make it a powerful air and water cleansing technology. Activated carbon made from coconut shells is becoming more and more well-liked since it is environmentally friendly, inexpensive, and effective at eliminating impurities. How Is It Produced? The carbonization technique is used to produce activated carbon from coconut shell. In the absence of oxygen, coconut shells are burned to high degrees and turned into char. Then, after being exposed to steam or chemicals to produce thousands of tiny pores and increase its surface area, the char is activated. The carbon's structure is altered during the activation process, making it much more adsorbent. This indicates that contaminants like pollution and chemicals can be drawn to it and retained there. To maintain uniform quality, the production of activated carbon from coconut shell is strictly controlled and standardised. The activated carbon that results is then rated according to the size of its pores, which establishes its specific use and efficiency. Start Manufacturing Business of Biodegradable Plastic Bags From Corn Starch

Environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional plastic bags include biodegradable plastic bags manufactured from corn starch, often known as corn plastic or PLA (polylactic acid) bags. These bags are constructed from natural resources, mostly corn flour that has undergone a polymerization process. The plastic-like material that results from this polymer's use can subsequently be moulded into bags. When exposed to heat, moisture, and microbes, biodegradable bags composed of corn starch compost, meaning they will decompose into organic matter. Conventional plastic bags, on the other hand, can take hundreds of years to degrade and frequently wind up contaminating our oceans and killing species. Due to their lesser need for non-renewable resources and carbon neutrality, which means they don't cause greenhouse gas emissions during production, PLA bags have a smaller impact on the environment. Additionally, they offer customers a safer alternative because they don't decompose into harmful chemicals like conventional plastic bags do. Note that although PLA bags can be composted, they must do so at a specialised facility. They won't degrade correctly in a backyard compost pile, and if they aren't carefully sorted, they could contaminate the composting process. Overall, maize starch-based biodegradable bags are a great replacement for conventional plastic bags and a vital complement to any environmentally conscious practise. Prospects for This Sector The demand for biodegradable plastic bags produced from maize starch is anticipated to rise as people's awareness of environmental issues grows. To make these bags more dependable and inexpensive for consumers, several businesses are investing in research and development to improve the production of these bags. Development of environmentally suitable substitutes for conventional plastic bags is essential given the current level of plastic pollution. More consumers are moving to biodegradable plastic bags, and businesses are taking responsibility for their environmental impact, so this industry's future appears bright. The Advantages of Biodegradable Plastic There are many advantages of using biodegradable plastic over conventional plastic, also referred to as compostable plastic. The following are some of the major benefits of biodegradable plastic: Benefits for The Environment: When exposed to the environment, biodegradable plastic is intended to disintegrate into harmless elements like carbon dioxide and water. This indicates that it doesn't add to the accumulation of plastic garbage in the environment or the ocean. A Smaller Carbon Footprint: Biodegradable plastic manufacture uses less energy and produces fewer greenhouse gases than conventional plastic production. As a result, both producers and customers can benefit from it in a more sustainable way. Versatility: From packaging materials to throwaway plates and cups, biodegradable plastic can be used in a variety of contexts. As a result, it may eventually take the place of conventional plastic in a variety of industries. Rising Consumer Demand: There is an increasing need for biodegradable substitutes as customers become more conscious of the negative environmental effects of conventional plastic. Businesses now have more chances to market and offer biodegradable goods. Enhanced Soil: Additionally, composting can be used to use biodegradable plastic, which decomposes and provides nutrients to the soil. This may aid in promoting sustainable agriculture and lowering the amount of garbage disposed of in landfills. In general, biodegradable plastic is more advantageous than conventional plastic in terms of reduced environmental impact, adaptability, and rising customer demand. Biodegradable plastic has the potential to significantly contribute to the development of a more sustainable future, despite the cost and scale issues that still need to be resolved. View of the World Market The market for biodegradable plastics is predicted to grow from $4,276.9 million in 2020 to $8,940.5 million by 2028, at a remarkable CAGR of 9.5%. A process known as biodegradation uses bacteria and fungus to partially or completely break down a substance into CO2, water, and biomass. Plastic that can be composted or biodegraded breaks down in precise conditions into CO2 or methane, biomass, and water by living creatures, particularly microorganisms. Petrochemicals, microorganisms, and renewable raw materials are typically used in the production of biodegradable polymers. Biodegradable plastics are utilised extensively in many applications, particularly packaging, due to their ability to break down naturally. The market for biodegradable plastics in the Asia-Pacific region had revenues of $2,003.8 million in 2020 and is anticipated to reach $4,133.1 million by the year 2026. This dominance is largely credited to the packaging industry's strong economic growth for the use of biodegradable plastics as well as consumers' growing positive attitudes towards its use to reduce plastic pollution. Growing economies like China and India have imposed strict restrictions on the use of traditional plastics, and key manufacturers there are launching sustainable packaging options including bio-based products, which are predicted to drive market expansion over the course of the review period. Conclusion It appears that maize starch-based biodegradable plastic bags have a promising future. We can have a beneficial impact on the environment by investing in eco-friendly alternatives and meeting the growing demand for sustainable options from consumers and businesses. To lessen our impact on the environment and save it for future generations, it is up to every one of us to make minor adjustments to our everyday activities.
