Mineral: Project Opportunities in West Bengal

PROFILE:

A mineral is a naturally occurring solid chemical substance formed through biogeochemical processes, having characteristic chemical composition, highly ordered atomic structure, and specific physical properties. India is one of the world's most naturally endowed lands. India is home to numerous minerals which benefit the country economically. The minerals produced in India constitute one-quarter of the world's most popular mineral resources.

RESOURCES:

West Bengal stands third in the country in terms of mineral production. The state contributes about one-fifth to the total production of minerals in the country. Coal constitutes 99% of the minerals extracted in West Bengal; fireclay, china clay, limestone, copper, iron, wolfram, manganese and dolomite are mined in small quantities. There are good possibilities of obtaining mineral oil and natural gas in the areas near the Bay of Bengal.

West Bengal is the third largest state for coal production, accounting for about half of India's total. Lignite mined in Darjeeling is used to make briquettes. West Bengal ranks next to Bihar and Madhya Pradesh in production of fireclay. China clay used in the pottery, paper, textile, rubber and paint industries are unearthed at Mohammad Bazar in Birbhum and Mejia in Bankura. Limestone which is used in cement industry is mined in Bankura, Purulia, Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri. There are copper mines in Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling. Small quantities of low quality iron-ore are mined in Bardhaman, Purulia, Birbhum and Darjeeling. There are manganese in the Jhargram region of Paschim Medinipur, Purulia and Bardhaman. The state’s production of dolomite comes from the Dooars region of Jalpaiguri.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Keeping pace with the liberalised Mineral Policy being adopted by the Government of India, Government of West Bengal has formulated its Mineral Policy in 2002. Among the basic objectives of the West Bengal Mineral Policy, 2002 following are worth mentioning:

1. To review the existing State monopolies over mineral exploration and wherever required, go in for selective de-reservation.

2. To invite private capital, resources and technology, both foreign and domestic, for better exploration and exploitation;

3. To promote necessary linkages for smooth and uninterrupted development of mineral based industries to meet the needs of the State.

4. To ensure proper vigilance and supervision of mining activities with particular emphasis on simplification of procedures and greater generation of revenues from mineral resources.

Iron and Steel: Project Opportunities in West Bengal

PROFILE:

India has one of the richest reserves of all the raw materials required for the industry, namely land, capital, cheap labour, iron ore, power, coal etc. Yet India is 5th in the world ranking for production of steel. Iron and steel is basis for laying the vibrant Indian industry. Production of steel has come to exist as an index of a country's potential, industrial and economic growth. The making of iron and steel had been known to the people of India since long. The iron pillar of Delhi is a proof of it and speaks of the quality of steel produced in this country in ancient times. The steel industry is often considered to be an indicator of economic progress, because of the critical role played by steel in infrastructural and overall economic development. The per capita usage of steel gives an indication of the technological advancement of a nation.

RESOURCES:

The growth of steel industry in the State is largely related to the proximity of raw materials, skilled manpower, port facilities and the vast market for steel products. Given these location advantages, large numbers of mini integrated steel plants have already been set up in the state manufacturing a wide range of products such as sponge irons, mild steels, iron pipes etc. The neighbouring Eastern States of India viz. Jharkhand, Orissa and Chattisgarh are endowed with huge iron ore reserves along with cooking coal and non-cooking coal. The establishment of Bengal Iron Works at Kulti in Burdwan district of West Bengal in 1870 where the first commercial blast furnace was set up in 1875 heralded the commencement of this industry in the State.

The easy availability of power, competitive rates of freight, close proximity to areas with natural resources relevant to the industry, and labour force traditionality skilled in operating iron and steel units are factors that have influenced the surge in investment in this sector.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Under the new industrial policy, iron and steel has been made one of the high priority industries. Price and distribution controls have been removed  as well as foreign direct investment up to 100% (under automatic route) has been permitted.  The Trade Policy has also been liberalized and import and export of iron and steel is freely allowed with no quantitative restrictions on import of iron and steel items. Tariffs on various items of iron and steel have drastically come down since 1991-92 levels and the government is committed to bring them down to the international levels.  With the abolishing of price regulation of iron and steel in 92, the steel prices are market determined. The policy devises a multi-pronged strategy to achieve these targets with following focus areas; removal of supply constraints especially availability  of critical inputs like iron ore; improve cost competitiveness by expanding and strengthening the infrastructure in roads, railways, ports and power; increase exports; meet the additional capital requirements by mobilizing financial resources; promote investments by removing  procedural delays. In addition the policy also addresses challenges arising out of environmental concerns, human resource requirements, R&D, volatile steel prices and the secondary sector.

Aluminium Anodizing Plant

Amorphous aluminum oxide (alumina, Al2O3) forms in a layer 2-3 nm thick when bare aluminum is exposed to oxygen. Aluminium anodizing is an electrochemical process in which an oxide (anodic) layer is chemically built on the surface of the metal. This oxide layer acts as an insulator and can be dyed in a wide variety of colors. Anodizing provides surface corrosion protection along with an excellent substrate for decorative finishes. Anodizing is a process for producing decorative and protective films on articles made from aluminium and its alloys. It is essentially a process where a thick film of aluminium oxide is built up on the surface of the aluminium through the use of a direct current electrical supply. Anodizing is an electrochemical process that converts the metal surface into a decorative, durable, corrosion-resistant, anodic oxide finish. Aluminium is ideally suited to anodizing, although other nonferrous metals, such as magnesium and titanium, also can be anodized. While anodizing aluminium allows the metal to keep its natural appearance, the pores in the protective oxide layer also help to provide a better surface for the adhesion of paints and glues. Anodized aluminium parts are commonly found in aircraft and architectural components, as well as consumer goods such as appliances (refrigerators, microwaves, and barbecues), sporting goods (baseball bats, golf carts, and fishing equipment) and electronics (televisions, smartphones, and computers).

Sulphur Black Dye

Sulfur dyes are the most commonly used dyes manufactured for cotton in terms of volume. They are cheap, generally have good wash-fastness, and are easy to apply. Sulfur dyes are predominantly black, brown, and dark blue. Red sulfur dyes are unknown, although a pink or lighter scarlet color is available. Sulfur dye is generally heated sulfur or sodium sulfide together with certain aromatic amines, amino phenols and other organic compounds, namely vulcanization. In dyeing, sulfur dye needs to be dissolved in a sodium sulfide solution or alkaline hydrosulfite solution to reduce to its hidden color, and then absorbed and oxidized by fiber to show color. • Sulfur dyes are commonly used for black, blue, brown, khaki and green colors. • Sulfur dyes are applied to cellulosic fibers and blends of cellulosics with polyester, nylon and acrylics. • Sulfur dyes can be applied with little difficulty and with excellent results at a relatively low cost. Sulfur dyes are high molecular weight compounds that are obtained from the reaction of sulfur or sulfides with phenols and amines. There are many colorants available in the market that contain sulfur however, only those dyes that are soluble in water after reacting with sodium sulphide in alkaline conditions are known to be sulfur dyes. Sulphur Black dye is available in powder, granules and liquid form, having high degree of properties than other cotton dyes available in market. Good color fastness properties such as light fastness, wash fastness and cost effectiveness makes Sulphur black an important class of dye. This dye can be applied on garment, fabric by exhaust, semi continuous or continuous dyeing methods.

Flexographic Printing

Printing as an art of graphic communication is so ancient that it is not certain when it was invented. It is reported to have originated in China. In the late 20th century flexography began to find new and significant applications as an alternative process used in newspaper printing presses. This was because of the simplicity and ease of the flexographic ink-distribution system, which only requires a single roller to determine the thickness of the ink applied, in contrast to the 10 or so rollers needed in conventional newspaper presses using oil-based inks. The Indian Print Industry is heading towards technological enhancement. The Printing Industry is gearing up to absorb the upcoming methods of printing like flexo printing and UV inks. In the coming years, the market for printing is expected to grow 6% annually. Over the last 5 years the printing Industry of India received an investment of over $2.9 billion and is currently the fastest growing printing market around the world. The $7.3 billion worth printing industry of India is providing employment to 400,000 people directly and 1.5 million indirectly. Thus, due to demand it is best to invest in this project. Flexographic Printing Industry

Flexographic Printing Industry. Flexography or Flexo Printing Business. Business Opportunities in Printing Sector Flexography is a modern version of letterpress printing. This traditional method of printing can be used on almost any type of substrate, including corrugated cardboard, cellophane, plastic, label stock, fabric, and metallic film. The flexographic printing process uses quick-drying, semiliquid inks. In this age of digital printing, flexography holds its own in the areas of large orders and long print runs, particularly of packaging products and labeling. Flexographic printing uses flexible photopolymer printing plates wrapped around rotating cylinders on a web press. The inked plates have a slightly raised image and rotate at high speeds to transfer the image to the substrate. Flexography inks can print on many types of absorbent and nonabsorbent materials. Flexography is well-suited to print continuous patterns, such as for gift wrap and wallpaper. Flexographic printing is a popular method for printing large orders of custom labels at rapid speeds by transferring ink onto the paper or film material using flexible printing plates mounted on fast-rotating cylinders. Flexographic printing plates allow customization options that aren’t possible with some other types of presses. A variety of products can be printed on flexographic presses like pressure-sensitive labels, shrink sleeve labels, flexible packets, multi-ply labels, double-sided printed labels, and more. Flexographic printing, or flexography, is a type of printing process that uses a flexible relief plate. This type of printing is mostly used for non-porous materials like food service paper, plastic, foil, brown paper, and packaging materials. Flexographic printing is unique because it adapts well to different materials and can use a wider range of inks, like water based rather than oil based inks. Because the type of printing holds up and is adaptable, it is used for flexible plastics, retail bags, and wallpaper and beverage cartons. In addition, flexographic printing usually uses low viscosity inks to allow faster drying time and speedier production for lower costs. Flexographic printing is used widely for the best printing of bold designs and extremely attractive effects can be achieved using 3 or 45 colors. Printing also depends on the printing inks properties. It is used widely for printing on paper, laminated Aluminium Foil, Cellophone Film, Polypropylene, and Polyethylene. Advantages of Flexography The flexographic printing process: • Runs at extremely high press speeds • Prints on a wide variety of substrate materials • Uses cost equipment that requires little maintenance • Uses relatively low-cost consumables • Is ideally suited for long runs • Handles all printing, varnishing, laminating, and die cutting in a single pass • Excellent quality reproduction of logos and text, adding value to your product • Simple and economical to maintain compared to ink jet printers • Printing dies are easily changed for different production runs • Use specialized inks for printing porous or non-porous surfaces: metals, rubber, plastics, textiles, paper, and more Flexographic printing has a number of advantages over traditional lithographic printing presses. It has a faster startup time and can print using a wide variety of ink on almost any substrate. It can also print on plastics, metallic films, cellophane, paper, and even on corrugated surfaces. Flexographic printing has extremely high press speeds and is suited for long runs – a good consideration for medium to large print jobs that need to be completed as quickly as possible. Here are some of the most common and important uses of flexographic printing: Brown Corrugated Boxes Flexographic printing’s ability to print on a wide variety of substrates and surfaces make it an ideal method for printing on brown corrugated boxes used in shipping and storage businesses. Flexible Packaging The ability to print on flexible, non-rigid materials makes flexographic printing useful when printing on rolls of material used for plastic and paper bags. Flexographic printing is an ideal choice for industrial converters that make printed plastic and paper bags. Food Packaging Flexographic printing is quick drying and able to use non-toxic inks. These factors make flexographic printing desirable in the printing of food packaging. It can basically be used on packaging like milk cartons, beverage containers, food containers, as well as disposable cups and containers. Medical Packaging Since flexography is food safe with the right ink, it can also be used to print packaging for medicines and other medical supplies. Flexographic printing can be used on foil wrappers, hygienic bags, plastic, and cardboard packaging. Newspaper and Other Print Media Even with the prevalence of e-books and the internet, there is still a market for newspapers, magazines, and books. The production of flyers, posters, and newspaper inserts also greatly benefit from flexographic printing’s ability to quickly print large print jobs. These are not all the applications that flexographic printing can be used on. It can be also used to print envelopes, containers, and even wallpaper. Flexographic printing’s capabilities are flexible enough that they can be used on other surfaces. Advances are still being made in the manufacture of ink and plates to improve print quality. There is even research being done on the possibility of using flexographic printing to print electronic circuits and solar cells – an exciting future application of the technology. Market Outlook Flexo printing is becoming more and more attractive to brands all over the world. Flexographic printing is an economical alternative to digital printing for medium-to-long print runs, simple designs, and color combinations. HT (High Tensile Wire) Manufacturing Industry

HT (High Tensile Wire) Manufacturing Industry. Production of High Tensile Steel Wire for Prestressed Concrete Poles and Railway Sleepers High tensile wire is galvanized and used for security usage or together used with vineyard for plant support. They are presented in low relaxation and high relaxation. High tensile wires are those which can withstand great strain without breaking or becoming deformed. High tensile wire is made with higher carbon steel. The increased carbon content increases the wire’s strength and elongation. As the carbon percentage content rises, steel has the ability to become harder and stronger through heat treating; however, it becomes less ductile. Regardless of the heat treatment, a higher carbon content reduces weldability. In carbon steels wire, the higher carbon content lowers the melting point. It is extensively used for encouragement in many different types industries. The Wire is used in the Electricity Poles, Railway Sleepers, Hume Pipes, Bridge Constructions, Silos, Buildings, Dams, Atomic Reactors, Airport, Hanger Runways, Slid Slab, Girders and many other users. Application: • Pole reinforcement • Pre-stressed concrete Pipes • Railway Sleeper Advantages: • Improves the bond strength between pre-stressed steel wire and concrete • Reduces the frictional losses between pre-stressed wire and concrete • Increases the anchorage efficiency • Maintains higher effective pre-stressing force in the structure • Reduces the number of operations at the customer end Market Outlook It is highly famous in the market due to its high quality and hassle free range, at very low prices. The Indian steel wire industry has an annual capacity of 2.5 million tonnes (value: Rs 8,000 crore) approximately. About 70% of the total production comes from the organised producers and the remainder is from the unorganised sector. The global market for Steel Wire is projected to exceed US$29 billion metric tons by 2024, driven by stable economic conditions across the world, leading to widespread demand creation across emerging as well as developed markets. Produced from wire rods, a finished long steel product, steel wires find their use in several end-use application areas. Construction, machinery and automotive markets especially present significant opportunities for use of steel wires in a range of application areas. For instance, in the building construction sector, steel wires are used for fencing, anchorage, balustrading, and binding among other major applications. Steel wires are also used in a range of infrastructure constructions such as suspension bridges, which are hung using steel ropes spun with thousands of steel wires together. Steel wires also find use for general engineering applications in machinery and heavy equipment. In automotive market, steel wires are used for reinforcing tires to add to their strength and durability required for modern day driving requirements. Agriculture land fencing is also made by steel wires. Besides, the steel wire industry is engaged in the production of a wide range of products such as steel cords used in reinforcing hoses. Wires are also used in manufacturing saw wire, which are employed in the slicing of silicon wafers. The construction sector is one of the most prominent end-use markets for steel wires globally. The construction sector typically uses steel wires not only in its primary wire form but also has wide ranging application for derived products such as wire mesh, strands and wire ropes and regularly uses it for imparting structural strength to concrete structures.
