Steel industry: Project Opportunities in Karnataka

PROFILE:

Steel Industry is a booming industry in the whole world. The increasing demand for it was mainly generated by the development projects that have been going on along the world, especially the infrastructural works and real estate projects that has been on the boom around the developing countries. India’s economic growth is contingent upon the growth of the Indian steel industry. Consumption of steel is taken to be an indicator of economic development. While steel continues to have a stronghold in traditional sectors such as construction, housing and ground transportation, special steels are increasingly used in engineering industries such as power generation, petrochemicals and fertilisers. India occupies a central position on the global steel map, with the establishment of new state-of-the-art steel mills, acquisition of global scale capacities by players, continuous modernisation and up gradation of older plants, improving energy efficiency and backward integration into global raw material sources.

RESOURCES:

Karnataka is the 3rd largest producer of steel in India with a current production level of 10.70 Million Tons per annum. Both alloy and non-alloy steel are produced and the product range includes basic steels like pig iron and sponge iron, ingot, blooms, billets, slabs, finished products like long products CTD & TMT (bars & rods), wire rod, sections, bright bars, CR/HR coils. The export of steel from Karnataka is around 0.96 Million Tons.

Based on this estimate, Karnataka can host a manufacturing steel base for more than 100 million tons capacity per annum.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Under the new industrial policy, iron and steel has been made one of the high priority industries. Price and distribution controls have been removed  as well as foreign direct investment up to 100% (under automatic route) has been permitted.  The Trade Policy has also been liberalized and import and export of iron and steel is freely allowed with no quantitative restrictions on import of iron and steel items. Tariffs on various items of iron and steel have drastically come down since 1991-92 levels and the government is committed to bring them down to the international levels.  With the abolishing of price regulation of iron and steel in 92, the steel prices are market determined. The policy devises a multi-pronged strategy to achieve these targets with following focus areas; removal of supply constraints especially availability  of critical inputs like iron ore; improve cost competitiveness by expanding and strengthening the infrastructure in roads, railways, ports and power; increase exports; meet the additional capital requirements by mobilizing financial resources; promote investments by removing  procedural delays. In addition the policy also addresses challenges arising out of environmental concerns, human resource requirements, R&D, volatile steel prices and the secondary sector.

Waste management: Project Opportunities in Karnataka

PROFILE:

Waste utilization, recycling and reuse plays a major role in limiting resource consumption and the environmental impact of waste. Recycling is an integral part of any waste management system as it represents a key utilization alternative to reuse and energy recovery (Waste-to-Energy). Which option is ultimately chosen depends on the quality, purity and the market situation. Hazardous waste management is a new concept for most of the Asian countries including India. The lack of technical and financial resources and the regulatory control for the management of hazardous wastes in the past had led to the unscientific disposal of hazardous wastes in India, which posed serious risks to human, animal and plant life.

RESOURCES:

As regards municipal waste on an average 40 to 50 % of the total municipal waste is generated in the sic municipal corporation of Karnataka & more than 70 % of municipal waste is generated by the residential & market areas. The domestic waste generated by households comprises mainly of organic, plastic & paper waste & small quantities of the waste. Plastic & glass are segregated at the household level or by rag pickers and sold. The remaining waste is disposed in community bins, discarded ointments and medicine. In addition about 1 to 2% of biomedical waste also gets mixed with municipal solid waste in the community bins.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

National policy on waste management is set out in the October 1998 policy statement on waste management - Changing our Ways. It outlines the Government's policy objectives in relation to waste management, and suggests some key issues and considerations that must be addressed to achieve these objectives. The policy is firmly grounded in an internationally recognised hierarchy of options, namely prevention, minimisation, reuse/recycling, and the environmentally sustainable disposal of waste which cannot be prevented or recovered.

Railway Sleepers Manufacturing

Railway Sleepers Manufacturing. PSC Sleepers for Railways. Production of Prestressed Concrete Railway Sleepers Prestressed concrete sleepers (or railroad ties) are principally designed in order to carry wheel loads from the rails to the ground as well as to secure rail gauge for dynamic safe movements of trains. In spite of the most common use of the prestressed concrete sleepers in railway tracks, the concrete sleepers are often modified on construction sites to fit in other systems such as cables, signaling gears, drainage pipes, etc. Railway sleepers, also called railroad ties, railway ties or crossties, are an important railway component. Generally, the rail sleeper is always laying between two rail tracks to keep the correct space of gauge. A concrete sleeper is a type of railway sleeper made out of steel reinforced concrete. Concrete is good in resisting compressive stress but is very weak in residing tensile stresses. Hence reinforcement is provided in the concrete wherever tensile stress is expected. Since elastic modulus of steel is quite high compared to concrete, the force developed in steel is high. A cage of reinforcements is prepared as per the design requirements, kept in the form work and then green concrete is poured. Market Outlook Indian railways is world’s largest railway network. Railways in India consume at about 350 Million concrete sleepers. The demand of such sleepers including Private players is expected to double to nearly 700 million sleepers in next 2 years. The Indian Railways is among the world’s largest rail networks. The Indian Railways network is spread over 115,000 km, with 12,617 passenger trains and 7,421 freight trains each day from 7,172 stations plying 23 million travelers and 3 million tons (MT) of freight daily. The railway network is also ideal for long-distance travel and movement of bulk commodities, apart from being an energy efficient and economic mode of conveyance and transport. The Government of India has focused on investing on railway infrastructure by making investor-friendly policies. It has moved quickly to enable Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in railways to improve infrastructure for freight and high-speed trains. At present, several domestic and foreign companies are also looking to invest in Indian rail projects. Global Railway Sleepers market size will increase to 980 Million US$ by 2025, from 710 Million US$ in 2018, at a CAGR of 4.7% during the forecast period. South America hold a market share of 6.63% will still play an important role which cannot be ignored. Any changes from Asia-Pacific might affect the development trend of Railway Sleepers. North America also play important roles in global market. Railway sleepers are predominantly produced from wood or concrete. Wooden sleepers are usually produced from hardwood, although soft wood is also possible depending on the application. Before the appearance of Concrete Sleepers, steel sleepers were also commonly used in the construction of railway tracks. Concrete sleepers can be produced from both new and recycled concrete. A railway sleeper is a rectangular support for the rails in railroad tracks. Generally laid perpendicular to the rails, ties transfer loads to the track ballast and subgrade, hold the rails upright and keep them spaced to the correct gauge. Railway sleepers are traditionally made of wood, but pre-stressed concrete is now also widely used, especially in Europe and Asia. Steel ties are common on secondary lines in the UK plastic composite ties are also employed, although far less than wood or concrete. From the view of region, Asia-Pacific and Europe have a larger sales market share in 2018 which together account for 74.02%, and will witness a stable growth in following years. Project Opportunities in Production of Calcium Propionate

Project Opportunities in Production of Calcium Propionate. Fastest Growing & Best Industry for Starting a Business. Calcium propionate is the most commonly used bread preservative globally. It is an effective growth inhibitor of most molds and some bacteria. It is widely employed in bread and other yeast-based bakery goods to prevent mold and rope formation and to extend their normal shelf life. Calcium propionate is used as a preservative in a wide variety of products, including but not limited to bread, other baked goods, processed meat, whey, and other dairy products. In agriculture, it is used, amongst other things, to prevent milk fever in cows and as a feed supplement Propionates prevent microbes from producing the energy they need, like benzoates do. However, unlike benzoates, propionates do not require an acidic environment. Calcium propionate is one of the safest food additives used by the food industry. Rats fed a diet containing nearly 4% calcium propionate for a year showed no ill effects. As a result, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has placed no limitations on its use in foods. In addition to baked goods, it is commonly used as a preservative in chocolate products, processed cheeses, and fruit preserves. The tobacco industry has also used calcium propionate as a preservative in some of its products. Uses Calcium propionate is a preservative commonly used in baked goods around the world. It works to extend the shelf life of baked goods by preventing mold and ropy bread bacteria growth. Mold inhibitor in pre-packed and sliced bread, Calcium propionate is used as a preservative in bread and other baked goods, and it may be combined with along with propionic acid and sodium propionate. Calcium propionate helps keep baked goods fresh by preventing mold and bacterial growth that would otherwise cause them to go bad. Silica Produced From Rice Husk Ash

Silica Produced From Rice Husk Ash. Rice Husk Ash Silica Manufacture. Emerging Investment Opportunities in agriculture waste processing Industry Silica occurs as amorphous to crystalline form in many types of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, but in sediments and sedimentary rocks much of the silica is detrital material. The chief forms of silica are hydrous opal, cryptocrystalline chalcedony, and crystalline quartz. As a byproduct of the combustion of rice husk to generate energy, rice husk ash (RHA) is formed by silica and carbon, apart from small amounts of other constituents. Several treatments can be used to increase the purity of the silica obtained, or even produce pure silica. Rice Husk Ash. Rice husk ash (RHA) is a highly reactive pozzolan obtained when rice husks are calcinated below the crystallization temperature at 780°C (Yu et al 1999). Silica is not a new commodity in the plastics market. Its usage as extenders and reinforcing fillers, as pozzolanic material and as glass microspheres for specific engineering applications are well known in the market. Because of its high silica and lignin content, rice husk is tough, woody and abrasive in nature with low nutritive properties and resistance to weathering. With growing environmental concern, open burning has been outlawed in many major rice-producing countries. 18% of the rice husk can be retrieved as ash after the gasification process. Silica content in ash is almost 90% and the rate of recovery of precipitated silica is 90-95% from the rice husk ash if the conversion efficiency is more than 70%. Rice hull ash (RHA) contains over 60% of silica which can be an economically viable raw material for the production of silica based products. Silica generation is a separate independent process not dependent on electricity generation, although the input ash is dependent on gasification process. Provision will be taken in the design so that external ash is used also as input thus increase silica production. Uses ? Rubber reinforcement (Tyre industry) ? Plastic reinforcement ? Agriculture (Animal food) ? Food, Healthcare, Cosmetics ? Catalyst; Coatings ? Pulp and Paper processing Market Outlook Combustion of rice hulls affords rice husk ash (acronym RHA). This ash is a potential source of amorphous reactive silica, which has a variety of applications in materials science. Most of the ash is used in the production of Portland cement. The rice husk ash is a green supplementary material that has applications in small to large scale. It can be used for waterproofing. It is also used as the admixture to make the concrete resistant against chemical penetration. The main applications of rice husk ash in the construction are: High-performance Concrete. Use of waste or by-products from different industries and the agricultural sector has received increasing attention in the scientific, technology, ecological, economic and social spheres in recent years. Rice husk (RH) is a by-product of rice milling and rice husk ash (RHA) is generated by combustion in a separate boiler. Both RH and RHA are abundantly accessible in rice growing countries such as China, India, Brazil, the USA, and Southeast Asia. Silica is the major constituent of the rice husk ash. So precipitated silica production will not only provide value addition but also solve the problem of large amount of ash disposal generated from gasification process. With such a large ash content & silica content in the ash it becomes economical to extract silica from the ash, which has wide market & also takes care of ash disposal. Precipitated Silica (also called particulate silica) is composed of aggregates of ultimate particles of colloidal size that have not become linked in massive gel network during the preparation process. It is an amorphous form of silica; the word amorphous denotes a lack or crystal structure, as defined by X ray diffraction. Early interest in amorphous silica was purely academic. The ash produced after the husks have been burned is high in silica. RHA can be used in a variety of application like: green concrete, high performance concrete, ceramic glaze, water proofing chemicals, roofing shingles, insulator, specialty paints, flame retardants, carrier for pesticides, insecticides & bio fertilizers etc. Precipitated silica is also used as filler for paper & rubber, as a carrier & diluents for agricultural chemicals, as an anti-caking agent, to control viscosity & thickness and as a cleansing agent in toothpastes & in cosmetics. The distinguishing feature of the growth of precipitated silica industry in India is that it has classifiably flourished in the small scale sector. Readily available new materials low capital investment & high rates of return offer a distinct advantage to the small scale manufacturers to venture into this field. There is a very good scope in this sector The market scope includes silica forms including precipitated, fumed, gels and sols, and micro silica (fumes). Rising demand for the product from the rubber industry is the primary factor driving the market. Increase in demand for tires is mainly driven by rising automotive production, especially in countries such as India, China, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Mexico, U.S., and Germany. Rapid economic growth. Silica provides higher abrasion resistance, tensile strength, and flex fatigue properties to rubber products. It is widely used in tire applications, owing to its ability to improve the bond and tear resistance between rubber tires and metallic reinforcements The growth of silica as a market is driven by its increasing application in paints and coatings. Fresh water fish processing. Business Opportunities in fish processing Industry.

Fresh water fish processing. Business Opportunities in fish processing Industry. The term fish processing refers to the processes associated with fish and fish products between the time fish are caught or harvested, and the time the final product is delivered to the customer. Although the term refers specifically to fish, in practice it is extended to cover any aquatic organisms harvested for commercial purposes, whether caught in wild fisheries or harvested from aquaculture or fish farming.Larger fish processing companies often operate their own fishing fleets or farming operations. The products of the fish industry are usually sold to grocery chains or to intermediaries. Fish are highly perishable. A central concern of fish processing is to prevent fish from deteriorating, and this remains an underlying concern during other processing operations. Fish processing can be subdivided into fish handling, which is the preliminary processing of raw fish, and the manufacture of fish products. Another natural subdivision is into primary processing involved in the filleting and freezing of fresh fish for onward distribution to fresh fish retail and catering outlets, and the secondary processing that produces chilled, frozen and canned products for the retail and catering trades. There is evidence humans have been processing fish since the early Holocene. These days, fish processing is undertaken by artisan fishermen, on board fishing or fish processing vessels, and at fish processing plants. The fish processing industry is important in the attainment of self-sufficiency in fish. Fish processing prevents wastage and prolong the shell-life of highly perishable fish. It also increases the dollar reserve of the country through exportation. Market Outlook Indian fisheries and aquaculture is an important sector of food production providing nutritional security, besides livelihood support and gainful employment to more than 14 million people, and contributing to agricultural exports. With diverse resources ranging from deep seas to lakes in the mountains and more than 10% of the global biodiversity in terms of fish and shellfish species, the country has shown continuous and sustained increments in fish production since independence. The total fish production during 2017-18 is estimated to be 12.60 million metric tons, of which nearly 65% is from inland sector and about 50% of the total production is from culture fisheries, and constitutes about 6.3% of the global fish production. Increasing contributions from inland sector and further from aquaculture have been significant over the years. With high growth rates More than 50 different types of fish and shellfish products are being exported to 75 countries around the world. Fish and fish products have presently emerged as the largest group in agricultural exports from India, The Indian fish market was worth INR 1,110 Billion in 2018. The market is further projected to reach INR 1,998 Billion by 2024, growing at a CAGR of 10.2% during 2019-2024. For nearly 6% of the global fish production, India today represents one of the largest producers of fish in the world. Both, domestic consumption as well as export of fishes have witnessed a strong growth in India over the last few years. The per capita consumption of fish has also shown a continuous growth over the last several years. A number of factors are currently driving the consumption of fish in India. The market for health and wellness foods in India is currently exhibiting strong growth. As previously discussed, fishes are perceived as a healthy food containing high levels of digestible protein, Increasing awareness of fish as a food associated with health and wellness is expected to create a positive impact on its consumption in the coming years. Operations of the fish/seafood processing industry include gathering, segregating, cutting, and packaging of seafood into ready-to-eat containers for retail purposes. Few companies operating in this industry are also engaged in providing fresh seafood to restaurants. The seafood processing industry acts as a link between retail customers and the fishermen, providing the later with a source of living. Whole port town economies are dependent on the seafood processing industry for their income. However, rise in raw material prices and strict environmental regulations protecting fish species is expected to impede the market growth. The emerging markets of India, China, and Brazil provide numerous growth opportunities for fish processing market expansion. Major drivers identified driving the market of fish processing are the continuous rise in demand of seafood, changing consumers dietary habits and consumers demand for differentiated and value-added seafood products. Fish processing industries is also accessible by seafood producers and so they can control the final product, quality and hygiene. Increasing fish feed is also a major driver identified driving growth for the global fish processing market. Development and distribution channel with improvements in technology in packaging, processing and storage of fish is also a factor identified driving the market growth. Eco-Friendly Natural Bamboo Fiber Manufacturing Business as a Money-Making Industry. Profitable Manufacturing Business Idea Bamboo fiber is the cellulose fiber extracted from the natural growth of bamboo, and is the fifth natural fibers following the cotton, linen, wool, and silk. Bamboo fiber has good air permeability, instantaneous water absorption, strong wear resistance and good dyeing and other characteristics. Bamboo fabric is a natural textile made from the pulp of bamboo grass. The Bamboo used to produce fabrics (not the same as Panda food) is easily replenished and requires no pesticides to grow. Bamboo is considered one of the most sustainable plants because it grows quickly and does not require chemicals or irrigation, and biodegrades more quickly than oil-based synthetics. Bamboo rayon is made by dissolving pulp bamboo into its cellulose component and then spun into viscose fibers. Clothing made of bamboo rayon typically lasts even longer and holds its shape even better than clothing made of simple bamboo fiber. Bamboo also has many antibacterial qualities, which bamboo fabric is able to retain, even through multiple washings. Bamboo exhibits up to a 99.8% antibacterial rate. This helps to reduce bacteria that thrive in clothing and cause unpleasant odors. It can also kill odor causing bacteria that live on human skin, making the wearer and his or her clothing smell sweet. Market Outlook Natural Bamboo Fiber is a cellulosic fiber which is soft, naturally breathable and moisture-wicking produced from the starchy pulp of bamboo plant. The bamboo fiber is widely used in bathroom textile, medical & hygienic clothing, bamboo clothing and home furnishings among others.
