Steel industry: Project Opportunities in Karnataka

PROFILE:

Steel Industry is a booming industry in the whole world. The increasing demand for it was mainly generated by the development projects that have been going on along the world, especially the infrastructural works and real estate projects that has been on the boom around the developing countries. India’s economic growth is contingent upon the growth of the Indian steel industry. Consumption of steel is taken to be an indicator of economic development. While steel continues to have a stronghold in traditional sectors such as construction, housing and ground transportation, special steels are increasingly used in engineering industries such as power generation, petrochemicals and fertilisers. India occupies a central position on the global steel map, with the establishment of new state-of-the-art steel mills, acquisition of global scale capacities by players, continuous modernisation and up gradation of older plants, improving energy efficiency and backward integration into global raw material sources.

RESOURCES:

Karnataka is the 3rd largest producer of steel in India with a current production level of 10.70 Million Tons per annum. Both alloy and non-alloy steel are produced and the product range includes basic steels like pig iron and sponge iron, ingot, blooms, billets, slabs, finished products like long products CTD & TMT (bars & rods), wire rod, sections, bright bars, CR/HR coils. The export of steel from Karnataka is around 0.96 Million Tons.

It is one among 6 major steel producing states. Karnataka is the 2nd largest in the country in terms of iron ore reserves and largest exporter of iron ore in the country. Hence, it can share more than 40% of the steel demand in India which is estimated as 124 million tons by 2011-12 and 50% of the exports of finished steel products. Based on this estimate, Karnataka can host a manufacturing steel base for more than 100 million tons capacity per annum.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Under the new industrial policy, iron and steel has been made one of the high priority industries. Price and distribution controls have been removed  as well as foreign direct investment up to 100% (under automatic route) has been permitted.  The Trade Policy has also been liberalized and import and export of iron and steel is freely allowed with no quantitative restrictions on import of iron and steel items. Tariffs on various items of iron and steel have drastically come down since 1991-92 levels and the government is committed to bring them down to the international levels.  With the abolishing of price regulation of iron and steel in 92, the steel prices are market determined. The policy devises a multi-pronged strategy to achieve these targets with following focus areas; removal of supply constraints especially availability  of critical inputs like iron ore; improve cost competitiveness by expanding and strengthening the infrastructure in roads, railways, ports and power; increase exports; meet the additional capital requirements by mobilizing financial resources; promote investments by removing  procedural delays. In addition the policy also addresses challenges arising out of environmental concerns, human resource requirements, R&D, volatile steel prices and the secondary sector.

Waste management: Project Opportunities in Karnataka

PROFILE:

Waste utilization, recycling and reuse plays a major role in limiting resource consumption and the environmental impact of waste. Recycling is an integral part of any waste management system as it represents a key utilization alternative to reuse and energy recovery (Waste-to-Energy). Which option is ultimately chosen depends on the quality, purity and the market situation. Hazardous waste management is a new concept for most of the Asian countries including India. The lack of technical and financial resources and the regulatory control for the management of hazardous wastes in the past had led to the unscientific disposal of hazardous wastes in India, which posed serious risks to human, animal and plant life.

RESOURCES:

As regards municipal waste on an average 40 to 50 % of the total municipal waste is generated in the sic municipal corporation of Karnataka & more than 70 % of municipal waste is generated by the residential & market areas. The domestic waste generated by households comprises mainly of organic, plastic & paper waste & small quantities of the waste. Plastic & glass are segregated at the household level or by rag pickers and sold. The remaining waste is disposed in community bins, discarded ointments and medicine. In addition about 1 to 2% of biomedical waste also gets mixed with municipal solid waste in the community bins.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

National policy on waste management is set out in the October 1998 policy statement on waste management - Changing our Ways. It outlines the Government's policy objectives in relation to waste management, and suggests some key issues and considerations that must be addressed to achieve these objectives. The policy is firmly grounded in an internationally recognised hierarchy of options, namely prevention, minimisation, reuse/recycling, and the environmentally sustainable disposal of waste which cannot be prevented or recovered.

Lead Battery Recycling

Lead Battery Recycling Manufacturing Plant, Detailed Project Report, Profile, Business Plan, Industry Trends, Market Research, Survey, Manufacturing Process, Machinery, Raw Materials, Feasibility Study, Investment Opportunities, Cost and Revenue, Plant Economics, Production Schedule, Working Capital Requirement, Plant Layout, Process Flow Sheet, Cost of Project, Projected Balance Sheets, Profitability Ratios, Break Even Analysis Lead is a material very easy to recycle and, provided that adequate procedures are implemented; the ?nal product (secondary lead) is indistinguishable from the primary lead produced from ores. About 50% of the lead consumed worldwide is derived from recycled and reused materials. There are many different uses of Lead. It may be used as a pure metal, alloyed with other metals, or as chemical compounds. The recovery of metals from metal scrap has the advantage that it is easier and far less energy dependent than the production of primary lead from ores. The production of recycled lead requires 35–40% of the energy necessary to produce lead from ores. In addition, the recovery of lead decreases the lead dispersion in the environment and preserves the mineral reserves for the future. Recycling lead is relatively simple and in most of the applications where lead is used, such as lead-acid batteries, it is possible to recover it for use over and over again. Lead batteries industry in India is currently estimated at Rs. 40,000 crore with 60% automotive and 40% industrial. Over thousands of player continued recycling activity in India through recovery of lead from telecom, uninterrupted power supply (UPS), inverters, renewable energy and other related industries. Thus, due to demand it is a good project for entrepreneurs to invest. Few Indian Major Players are as under: • Hindustan Zinc • SesaSterlite • Hindalco The demand for lead is expected to grow at 5 to 6%, driven by increasing demand for UPS battery segment as also from increasing market for replacement of batteries in the automobiles. The global market for lead has been witnessing noticeable growth on account of growing lead-acid battery consumption. In addition, the global demand is estimated to be significant in the coming years as capacity expansions and new operations boost supply at a faster rate than demand. Production of Sterile Water for Injection

Production of Sterile Water for Injection. WFI (Water for Injection) Manufacturing. Water for Pharmaceutical Purposes. Sterilized Water is water that has been sterilized, to ensure an absence of any bacteria in the water. It is used for mixing infant formula for babies, for people with compromised immune systems, and to dilute or dissolve water soluble drugs for injections. Sterile water is water that has no microorganisms living within it. As it cannot transfer pathogens, it is used mainly in the medical setting. Sterile water, though sometimes distilled, is not the same thing as distilled water. As some microorganisms can survive at high temperatures, simply boiling water may not be enough to sterilize it. Special, but not uncommon, equipment is required if one wishes to sterilize water. This kind of water is free of all microbial life. As sterilized water does not contain the same amount of dissolved salt as the human body, overhydration would occur if a physician used the water as an irrigation fluid during surgery or other invasive medical procedures. The value of sterile water is its ability to act as a solvent in many pharmacological compounds that physicians will eventually inject into patients. The water is also a tool in helping physician’s clean wounds without putting patients at risk for infection. Water that is sterile plays a large role in medical research. In many cases, water is necessary to study microorganisms. Using this water is required in these and other experiments as normal or even distilled water may introduce outside bacteria into the experiment. This contamination would invalidate all test results and put other experiments in the same laboratory at risk. Therefore, sterile water is the only acceptable water for laboratory research. The global intravenous solutions market will grow at a steady CAGR of almost 6% during the forecast period. Intravenous solutions have a complete mix of essential nutrients and help people suffering from conditions like diabetes and cancer to get the required nutrients. These fluids are very effective in treating electrolyte imbalances and replacing lost fluids. Products used in intravenous therapy are highly regulated by governments to ensure quality and constant availability to consumers. A wide variety of products, including antibiotics and medications, are used during intravenous therapy to treat patients. Growing incidence rate of chronic diseases, such as cancer, is also fueling the demand for Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN), which forms a vital part of the treatment. Intravenous nutrition helps sustain strength, maintains hydration levels in patients, and facilitates faster recovery. Cancer prevalence is forecasted to grow by 70% over the next few decades. This poses a colossal growth prospect for the market. Profitable Project Investment Opportunity in Acetates Production

Profitable Project Investment Opportunity in Acetates Production. Ethyl and Butyl Acetate Manufacturing Business Ethyl acetate Ethyl acetate is a moderately polar solvent that has the advantages of being volatile, relatively non-toxic and non-hygroscopic. It is an important green organic solvent with excellent dissolving ability and quick-drying property. Ethyl acetate (structure shown above) is the most familiar ester to many chemistry students and possibly the ester with the widest range of uses. Esters are structurally derived from carboxylic acids by replacing the acidic hydrogen by an alkyl or aryl group. Ethyl acetate itself is a colourless liquid at room temperature with a pleasant "fruity" smell, b.p. 77°C. Common Uses of Ethyl Acetate Ethyl acetate is manufactured on a large scale, as over 1 million tons are produced annually in the world. This chemical is used commonly due to its low cost and agreeable aroma. • Nail polish remover • Cigarettes • Glue • Paint (as an activator or hardener) • Confections (as an artificial flavor) • Perfume Ethyl acetate has many uses, such as artificial fruit essences and aroma enhancers, artificial flavours for confectionery, ice cream and cakes, as a solvent in many applications (including decaffeinating tea and coffee) for varnishes and paints (nail varnish remover), and for the manufacture of printing inks and perfumes. Ethyl acetate is most commonly used as a solvent (due to its dilution properties). As a high purity solvent, it is used in cleaning electric circuit boards and as a nail polish remover. At a lower purity, it can be used as in printing, pharmaceuticals, perfumes, food, decaffeination of tea/coffee and a carrier solvent for herbicides. Additionally, increasing consumption of tobacco products by the youth and female population has further elevated the demand for these products. Zarda – a moist or dry chewing tobacco mixed with a variety of colourings, spice essences, and perfumes. Zarda is prepared by cutting tobacco leaves into small pieces and boiling them in water with slaked lime and spices until the water evaporates. It is then dried, and colouring and flavouring agents are added. Zarda may be chewed by itself, with areca nut or in betel quid quid. It is available in small packets or tins. In India it is used in two forms pilapatti and kalipatti. Kimam' or 'Qiwam' as it is said is a liquid tobbaco mixture consumed with 'Paan'. Kimam (Qiwam) is made after adding tobacco with a lot of spices and some imported essences. Only experts can make it and there are only a few in India who know to make it. It is for taste and its smell is quite strong. Kimam is a thick tobacco paste, it is also available as granules or pellets. To prepare kimam, the midribs and veins of tobacco leaves are removed, and the remaining matter is boiled in water. Powdered spices (saffron, cardamom, aniseed and musk) are added, and the mixture is stirred and allowed to macerate until it becomes a paste, from which granules and pellets are made. It is used in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. Smokeless tobaccos are a group of tobaccos that are formally meant for consumption purposes apart from smoking. Several types of tobacco are used to sniff, chew, held in the mouth, or even applied on the skin. Research shows that quitting smokeless tobacco can be as difficult as quitting smoking tobacco. While less consumed than smoking tobacco, it is still a very widely used and sold commodity in the world. Both are known to be interrelated among consumers, as those who smoke cigarettes are more likely to take up smokeless tobacco and vice versa. Statistics also point to males consuming more smokeless tobacco than females. The smokeless tobacco market is anticipated to grow due to growing smoking bans and awareness associated with cigarette consumption. The product choices are expected to evolve based on ease of use, cost and regulatory sights. Therefore, the smokeless tobacco market estimation and forecast has been initiated with an exhaustive set of assumptions, following which market size information for both key geographical areas and key products has been provided. Production of Pearl Caustic Soda

Production of Pearl Caustic Soda. Investment Opportunities in Inorganic Chemical Industry. Manufacture of Caustic Soda Pearl Caustic soda pearls (also known as sodium hydroxide, caustic soda, NaOH, sodium hydrate, or Sodagrain) are white spheres of caustic soda with a barely perceptible odour. They are soluble in water, with the liberation of heat, and are stable under normal conditions. Caustic soda is a strong base and, as such, has many applications in industries all over the world, both now and in the past. It is one of the oldest manmade chemicals with excavations in Egypt showing samples of it dating from 3000 B.C. Uses: Caustic soda pearls are an important inorganic chemical as they are used in numerous industries worldwide. The highest demand for caustic soda comes from the paper industry where it is utilised in pulping and bleaching processes. They are also in demand in the aluminium industry as the caustic soda dissolves bauxite ore, which is the raw material in aluminium production. Another major use for caustic soda is chemical processing as caustic soda is a basic feedstock for a range of down-stream products including solvents, plastics, fabrics, adhesives etc. Caustic soda pearls are also used in soap production as they engender saponification of the vegetable oils or fats that are necessary for soap manufacture. They also have in role in the natural gas industry where sodium hydroxide is used to help produce and process petroleum products. Caustic soda can also be employed in the textile industry where it is used in the chemical processing of cotton. Caustic soda also has small scale applications. It can also be used for aluminium etching, chemical analysis, and in paint stripper. It is also a component in a range of domestic products including pipe and drain cleaner, oven cleaner, and in home-cleaning products. The global caustic soda market is expected to reach USD 46.31 billion by 2024. Escalating demand across various industries such as textile, pulp & paper, organic chemicals, etc. is expected to strengthen the market growth. Rising demand for alumina in automobile industry especially in Asia Pacific is considered to stimulate the market growth. Organic chemicals emerged as the leading application segment and accounted for 16.3% of total market volume in 2015. Owing to incessant demand for manmade fibers, the textile industry is expected to emerge as the fastest growing application segment at an estimated CAGR of 4.4% from 2016 to 2024. Textiles are expected to emerge as the leading application surpassing organic chemicals over the forecast period. The demand for pulp and paper is increasing due to rising domestic household tissue paper requirements, application of pulp and paper in printing and writing paper is also growing which will boost the demand for caustic soda. Growing usage of magazine and newspaper across the globe is positively impacting the caustic soda market. Moreover, textile industry is expanding owing to technological development and pouring investment, hence these factors are propelling overall market growth in coming years. Caustic soda serves as a strong alkali compound and readily reacts with various substances including zinc and aluminum. This is another major factor likely to propel the market demand in metallurgical applications. Moreover, the market is further expected to accelerate with the increase in consumption of caustic soda in alumina extraction. Caustic soda garners a share of more than 40% among the inorganic chemicals in terms of volume of consumption worldwide. Demand from the organic chemicals industries account for a significant portion of the volume of caustic soda market. The increasing demand from end user industries such as pulp, paper, and textiles is expected to the drive the growth of the global caustic soda market.
