Sericulture (Tasar Silk): Project Opportunities in Jharkhand

PROFILE:

Sericulture is an agro-based industry. It involves rearing of silkworms for the production of raw silk, which is the yarn obtained out of cocoons spun by certain species of insects. The major activities of sericulture comprises of food-plant cultivation to feed the silkworms which spin silk cocoons and reeling the cocoons for unwinding the silk filament for value added benefits such as processing and weaving. Silk is a fine strand of fiber that is a solidified secretion produced by certain caterpillars to encase themselves in the form of cocoons. India is second largest producer of silk. Sericulture industry is looking out for the developments of young age silk worm rearing or chawki rearing. Care of silk worms start from the stage of procurement of silk worm eggs from the grainage itself. Silk worm eggs are distributed to the farmers for commercial rearing when active development of embryo is in progress. The important aspect of young silkworm rearing management are a suitable separate rearing house or room, well maintained mulberry garden with assured irrigation facilities. Sericulture has emerged as a virtual lifeline and a profitable employment avenue for villagers in Maoist-affected areas in India's eastern Jharkhand. Under the aegis of the Jharkhand state industrial department, farmers are beginning to rear silkworms.

RESOURCES:

Jharkhand, much like Chattisgarh and Uttaranchal, is endowed with adequate forest cover. These forests are home to two species of trees -Arjuna (Terminalia Arjuna) & Asan (Terminalia Tomentosa) which are breeding ground for the moth which produces the cocoon from which Tasar yarn is reeled. Jharkhand's forest department is also planning to encourage planting of Arjuna trees in place of the traditional Acacia or Eucalyptus trees. Tussar Food plants are available over an area of 9 lakh hectares. The Singhbhum and Santhalpargana regions are the main silk producing centres in the State. The State is promoting this activity through 28 pilot project centres situated in different areas. Each rearer can rear on an average 200 eggs or Disease Free Laying (DFLs) so the annual demand of commercial seed or egg is of 130 lakh. There are three types of seeds or eggs – Nucleus, Basic seed and Basic seed multiplied to commercial seed.

GOVERNMENT RESOURCES:

Tasar culture is a backbone for Tribal development, and the Government of India, through the Central Silk Board and different State Governments have initiated several developmental and welfare measures for the tribal welfare through it. Jharkhand's forest department is also planning to encourage planting of Arjuna trees in place of the traditional Acacia or Eucalyptus trees. Jharkhand Sericulture Development Institute (JSDI) and Jharkhand Silk Technical Development Institute (JSTDI) are being strengthened to give an impetus to this sector. During the year 2010-11, it is proposed to rear 2.35 lakh tasar nucleus DFLs, 16 lakh of tasar basic DFLs and 96 lakh of commercial DFLs through seed and commercial rearers in the State. It is proposed to be benefited 40,000 -50,000 Tasar farmers through Tasar seed production and its rearing during the year.

Steel Industry

PROFILE:

Steel Industry is a booming industry in the whole world. India’s economic growth is contingent upon the growth of the Indian steel industry. Consumption of steel is taken to be an indicator of economic development. While steel continues to have a stronghold in traditional sectors such as construction, housing and ground transportation, special steels are increasingly used in engineering industries such as power generation, petrochemicals and fertilisers. Indian Steel Industry is more than a century old. India has now emerged as the eighth largest producer of steel in the world with a production capacity of 35MT. Almost all varieties of steel is now produced in India. India has also emerged as a net exporter of steel which shows that Indian steel is being increasingly accepted in the global market. The growth of the steel industry in India is also dependant, to a large extent, on the level of consumption of steel in the domestic market. Steel consumption is significant in housing and infrastructure. In recent years the surge in housing industry of India has led to increase in the domestic demand for steel.

RESOURCES:

Jharkhand emerges as hub for steel companies. The state is endowed with deposits of Iron Ores of both, Hematite & Magnetite. The Hematite deposits are mainly located in the West Singhbhum District and have a resource base exceeding 3700 Million Tonnes. These have been explored only in pockets by large industry houses in their lease hold. There is a very good scope of enlarging this resource base by further exploration. The Magnetite Deposits are located in the East Singhbhum, Latehar & Palamu districts. They comprise lenticular ore bodies as well as Schist rocks with 80 to 36% magnetic. The exploration of these bodies is yet to be taken up. The existing steel mills are sourcing their iron ore (Hematite) from West Singhbhum. The Magnetite ore is being used in heavy media coal washeries & paints. Tata Steel's largest plant is located in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, with its recent acquisitions; the company has become a multinational with operations in various countries. If the interest shown by all the companies, big and small, in Jharkhand's iron ore deposits translates into reality, the state will produce more than half the total steel in India. First Iron & steel factory  is located at Jamshedpur and Largest Steel plant in Asia is Bokaro steel plant.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Under the new industrial policy, iron and steel has been made one of the high priority industries. Price and distribution controls have been removed  as well as foreign direct investment up to 100% (under automatic route) has been permitted.  The Trade Policy has also been liberalized and import and export of iron and steel is freely allowed with no quantitative restrictions on import of iron and steel items. Tariffs on various items of iron and steel have drastically come down since 1991-92 levels and the government is committed to bring them down to the international levels.  With the abolishing of price regulation of iron and steel in 92, the steel prices are market determined. The policy devises a multi-pronged strategy to achieve these targets with following focus areas; removal of supply constraints especially availability  of critical inputs like iron ore; improve cost competitiveness by expanding and strengthening the infrastructure in roads, railways, ports and power; increase exports; meet the additional capital requirements by mobilizing financial resources; promote investments by removing  procedural delays. In addition the policy also addresses challenges arising out of environmental concerns, human resource requirements, R&D, volatile steel prices and the secondary sector.

Noodles, Vermicelli, Macaroni and Spaghetti Production Business. Start a Profitable Pasta Product Manufacturing Industry Macaroni is a traditional food product that is formed by the use of dough, which is made by the use of flour, water, and eggs after which it is formed into different shapes. It can be simply put that macaroni is a dry pasta. Lastly, a curved macaroni is mostly referred to as elbow macaroni, which is popular among young children. Many macaroni and noodle products are being used in precooked frozen dinners of macaroni and cheese, macaroni and spaghetti and meat sauce, tuna and noodles and many others. Some what the some preparation techniques are used for freezing are used for canning. Spaghetti is long, thin pasta. Spaghetti with meatballs in marinara sauce is an Italian restaurant classic. Spaghetti is a popular Italian pasta, often served with a tomato sauce sometimes called spaghetti sauce. The Italian word spago means string, and spaghetti is the plural of spago — a description of what spaghetti looks like. Spaghetti straps are very thin shoulder straps found on dresses and summery tops. Spaghetti is generally served with some type of sauce; the sauce and the type of spaghetti are usually matched based on consistency and ease of eating. Northern Italian cooking uses less tomato sauce, garlic and herbs. In Northern Italy white sauce is more common. However Italian cuisine is best identified by individual regions. In Southern Italy more complex variations include spaghetti paired with fresh vegetables, olives, capers or seafood. Vermicelli is a type of fine pasta that is similar to spaghetti. The pasta features long rounded pasta strands that tend to be slightly thinner than spaghetti and somewhat thicker than angel hair pasta. In Italian, vermicelli literally means "little worms" and reflects the pastas distinctive worm-like shape. In India and other countries of the Indian Subcontinent, wheat vermicelli is known by various local names such as sev in Gujarati, shavige in Kannada, sevalu or semiya in Telugu, and semiya in Tamil and Malayalam. Vermicelli is made out of maida that is ground from very hard wheat. It is simply maida, water, and a little salt. Vermicelli is a popular instant food product. It falls under the category of extruded product and is made from wheat flour. At times tapioca or soya bean or groundnut flour is also added. Thus, it is rich in proteins and liked by people from all walks of life, irrespective of age. India celebrates more festival than other countries. These festivals are chiefly religious, secular and social. The festivals are therefore an intimate part of our religious as well as secular life. They are at the same time related to some ancient religious length, to the cycle of reasons, and to the community's need of change, release and economic well-seeing. Noodles were traditionally served in a hot or cold seasonal broth whilst pasta had a sauce added. Nowadays, though, fusion cuisine is offering all sorts of exciting new ways to prepare noodles. According to the output and constitute, this is the largest segment in this sector of the processed food market. Generally, this item is more popular in the northern parts of our country. The product is an extruded product made of tapioca flour and maida. They are long thread-like of 0.22 to 0.4 mm. thickness. Trends in Indian noodle market • Traditional flavors still dominate: Masala, chicken and tomato are most popular flavors in the market • Addressing rural market: Noodles are primarily consumed in urban India and to expand this market companies have introduced small sized and low cost products to address the demand of rural market. The success of this effort is still to be seen. • Huge Rural market: rural India where close to 60% of Indian population resides is a huge consumption market virtually un-penetrated by any player. Low cost products with appropriate marketing can open up this huge market. Some of the major reasons for its popularity are: • Increasing population of the country. • Rapid industrialization in the country. • Increasing purchasing capacity of the people. • The durability of the product. • The changing eating habit of the population. • Increasing preference for ready to eat food because of the increasing numbers of working couples etc. Vermicelli: Five main features of vermicelli make it a highly demanded product in the market: • Ready to eat • Easy to prepare • Nutritious • Tasty and • Low Cost It is one of the most preferred ready to cook item in both Indian and foreign markets. With the rapid urbanization and growth of the economy, the demand of healthy and easy to prepare food products has reached sky high. This makes the vermicelli making business an ideal business opportunity to grab on as the demand for the same is in a highly growing trend. During Ramzan, the demand reaches at the top as kheer made of vermicelli is consumed all on a daily basis after daylong fasting. However, in compare to the other foreign countries, the consumption rate of vermicelli is comparatively low, thus there is a huge opportunity to grow and capture the market. Urbanization has changed the lifestyles of not only urbanites but even of semi-urban and rural areas. This along with increase in the purchasing power of people has fuelled demand for many fast food or instant food items and vermicelli is one such product. With the addition of groundnut or soya bean or tapioca flour, it also becomes a nutritive product and thus even health conscious people prefer it. Thus vermicelli has, become a very popular instant food. Variety since last few years and its demand is steadily growing. There are some established brands but the market is very large and growing. A small-scale unit can compete with these brands in the local market on the price front because of low overheads, less transportation costs and reasonable advertisement budget. Proper and adequate placement of product and thrust on publicity at the point of sales would also be crucial. Pasta Product Market: The global market for pasta can be classified into spaghetti, macaroni, and noodles. It can also be bifurcated into fresh and dried pasta. While the former is prepared from simple dough of eggs and flour, the latter is made from finely ground semolina flour and water, sans egg mostly. Fresh pasta has a comparatively shorter shelf life than dried pasta and hence it is more expensive. Dried pasta generates accounts for a dominant share vis-à-vis sales in the global market for pasta. The overall global pasta market is expected to grow moderately in the upcoming years. Global Pasta Market is projected to witness at the CAGR of 5.85% and it is projected to reach USD 32.78 Billion during the period of 2017 to 2023. The global pasta market is being driven by a number of favorable factors. The changing preferences of the consumers, resulting from the western influences and urbanization in the developing regions, have contributed to the market growth. Further, as a result of hectic lifestyle, the consumers prefer easy-to-make food products. Since, pasta is a healthy carbohydrate-rich food and convenient to prepare, the demand for different types of pasta products such as fusilli, macaroni and vermicelli, has been on a surge. Moreover, manufacturers are introducing product innovations such as gluten-free pasta, organic pasta and vegan pasta to attract a larger consumer-base. Geography-wise, the global market for pasta has been segmented into Asia Pacific, Europe, North America, and the Rest of the World. Among them, Europe accounts for maximum percentage share in terms of consumption and North America comes next. Markets in China and India, emerging economies whose growth rate has surpassed that of all other countries in the world, have proved to be tough ones to crack. Per capita sales of pasta is low in India and China on account of lesser priced regional staples such as rice and noodles. Besides the lack of affordability and cultural preferences, the abundant availability of pasta is another factor hobbling the growth of the Asian markets. Going forward, however, tables might likely turn due to rising per capita income in emerging economies, particularly India and China. This, coupled with rising urbanization, is anticipated to push substantial growth in the near future. The spaghetti segment is projected to register the higher growth rate (5.77%) during the forecast period of 2017 to 2023. Change in consumer lifestyle, increasing disposable income, increase in health awareness, and rise in demand for convenience food and consumption will a positive impact on the market during the forecast period. Packaged foods are convenient to carry, store, and use. Thus, all these factors together will drive the market. The primary factors catalyzing the growth of the pasta market in India include rising urbanization, changing lifestyles and surging demand for ready-to-eat products. In addition to this, the market is also influenced by an increasing women employment rate coupled with rising disposable incomes. Further, the health-conscious consumers are demanding food products with healthier ingredients, which has led to a rise in the demand for pasta made with whole-wheat and quinoa. Some of the other forces that have been proactive in maintaining the market growth are longer shelf-life and ease of preparation. Looking forward, the market value is projected to reach US$ 709.1 Million by 2023, registering a CAGR of 16.2% during 2018-2023. Production of Industrial Gases and Speciality Gases Mixture

Production of Industrial Gases and Speciality Gases Mixture. Investment & Business Opportunities in Oxygen, Nitrogen and Argon Gas Manufacturing Plant Industrial gases are comprised of elements, molecular compounds, or mixtures. Industrial gases belong to a special class of chemicals that functions in a large number of applications in several end user industries. They are composed at ambient temperature and pressure. These are formed in both liquid and gaseous forms. Industrial gases are specific gaseous materials produced for industrial purposes, with the most prominent ones being oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, helium, and hydrogen, although various other mixtures are also manufactured and provided as gas cylinders. A number of industries require these customized gases, including steel, oil and gas, chemicals and petrochemicals, biotechnology, medicine, environmental protection, and nuclear power, and the market for the same is feeding off the prosperity of each of them. Industrial gases are used in a wide range of industries, which include oil and gas, petrochemicals, chemicals, power, mining, steelmaking, metals, environmental protection, medicine, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, food, water, fertilizers, nuclear power, electronics and aerospace. Industrial gas is sold to other industrial enterprises; typically comprising large orders to corporate industrial clients, covering a size range from building a process facility or pipeline down to cylinder gas supply. Specialty Gases Specialty gases represent gases which are rare or ultra-high purity (99.995% and above). Many industries, including analytical, pharmaceutical, electronics and petrochemical benefit from the unique properties of specialty gases that help to improve yields, optimize performance and lower costs. Specialty gases are used in analytical methods such as gas and liquid chromatography as well as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and non-dispersive infrared (NDIR). Other analytical methods are described in the various subpages. Oxygen Oxygen is a gas. It is a colorless, tasteless, odourless gaseous element that constitutes 21% of the atmosphere and is found in water, in most rocks and minerals, and in numerous organic compounds, that is capable of combining with all elements except the inert gases, that is active in physiological processes, and that is involved especially in combustion processes. Oxygen is the third most abundant element in the universe after hydrogen and helium and the most abundant element. Oxygen dissolves more readily in water than nitrogen, and in freshwater more readily than seawater. Water in equilibrium with air contains approximately 1 molecule of dissolved O2 for every 2 molecules of N2 (1:2), compared with an atmospheric ratio of approximately 1:4. The solubility of oxygen in water is temperature-dependent, and about twice as much (14.6 mg•L?1) dissolves at 0°C than at 20°C (7.6 mg•L?1). Uses The largest user of oxygen is the steel industry. It is also used in the manufacture of other metals, notably copper and lead. It is more economical to use pure oxygen, or oxygen-enriched air, rather than air as this increases the reaction rates and means that smaller chemical plants can be used. Further it makes it easier to ensure that no gases such as sulfur dioxide are lost and pollute the atmosphere. The gas is also used in the manufacture of many chemicals including nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide, epoxyethane and chloroethene (vinyl chloride), the precursor to PVC. Among its other uses is the burning off of carbon deposited on the fluid catalyst used in the catalytic cracking of gas oil A growing use for oxygen is in treating sewage and effluent from industry. Polluted rivers and lakes can be cleaned by dissolving oxygen gas directly into the water to encourage a better ecological balance. It is used, for example, in fish farming to provide this balance. It is also used, with sodium hydroxide, to bleach paper pulp as an alternative to chlorine dioxide or sodium chlorate (I) (sodium hypochlorite). Nitrogen Nitrogen gas is one of the most abundant resources on the planet. It makes up around 70 percent of the air around us. What makes it so special is that it is a nearly inert gas that doesn’t react with other compounds in the air. Various industries take advantage of purified nitrogen’s inert characteristics and use the gas to their advantage. Uses: Nitrogen gas is used in many varying industries—a few of them are highlighted below: • Food Packaging – Nitrogen is used to displace oxygen in food packaging. By eliminating the oxygen, the food can last longer. It can also add a cushion around the food to keep it safe from breaking in transport. • Light Bulb Production – In incandescent light bulbs, nitrogen gas is often used as a cheaper alternative to argon. • Chemical Plants – Nitrogen is used to displace oxygen and prevent explosions in highly dangerous atmospheres, such as chemical plants and manufacturing facilities. • Tire Inflation – Nitrogen offers many benefits when used to fill tires, such as giving them a longer life by reducing oxidation. It also improves tire pressure retention to give drivers better gas mileage. • Electronics – When electronics are being assembled, nitrogen gas is used for soldering. Using nitrogen reduces the surface tension to provide a cleaner breakaway from the solder site. • Stainless Steel Manufacturing – By electroplating the stainless steel with nitrogen, the finished product is stronger and resistant to corrosion. • Pollution Control – Nitrogen gas can be used to remove the VOCs in liquids before they are discarded. • Pharmaceuticals – Almost every major drug class contains some nitrogen, even antibiotics. Nitrogen, in the form of nitrous oxide, is also used as an anesthetic. • Mining – In the mining industry, nitrogen gas is used to quickly extinguish fires by eliminating the oxygen from the air. And when an area is going to be abandoned, they use nitrogen to ensure the area will not explode. Nitrogen is used to make ammonia. It is also widely used to provide an inert atmosphere, a process known as 'blanketing', principally to exclude oxygen. For example, nitrogen is used in this way in food packaging, glass making, and semiconductor manufacture. It is also used to purge out pipes prior to welding (for example, oil pipes) to ensure that no flammable vapours are left behind. Liquid nitrogen is being increasingly used to refrigerate food during transportation. Medical samples containing, for example blood, viruses for vaccinations and semen, can be stored for long periods if kept cool in liquid nitrogen. Argon Argon is a colourless, odourless, inert gas sourced through the fractional distillation of liquid air. The omnipresent argon gas exists in its natural form in the form of multiple isotopes such as 40Ar, 36Ar, and 38Ar. Owing to its inert reactivity, argon is one of the most preferred gases for shielding metals from oxidation during welding. It is also used for joining several nonferrous and ferrous alloys. Owing to these reasons, the argon gas also finds great usage in aerospace, aircraft and automotive industry where it is used to weld parts and frames. The argon gas has better thermal insulation properties than air and hence, it is one of the most widely used gases for filling the dry suits used for scuba diving. Excimer lasers, which are used for the production of microelectronic devices, use a mixture of argon, fluorine and helium. Argon is also used for a variety of other purposes. For instance, it is used in incandescent lamps and phosphorescent tubes, fire extinguishers and airbag inflation. It is also used during cryosurgery spectroscopy and decarburizing of stainless steel. Although argon is nontoxic in nature, excessive contact can lead to asphyxiation. Ferro vanadium belongs to the category of ferroalloy. Ferro vanadium is an alloy which is formed by combining iron and vanadium. Ferrovanadium contains 35% to 85% of vanadium depending on applications of the product in end-use industry. Ferrovanadium is an alloy material that is used in manufacturing of steel. It imparts desirable properties such as abrasion resistance, high temperature and hardenability. Ferrovanadium used for manufacturing of steel offers the end product with high stability against alkalis as well as acids such as sulphuric and hydrochloric acids. In addition, products containing ferro vanadium are at reduced risk to be susceptible to corrosion. Ferro vanadium also helps in reducing the overall weight of the material as well as increasing the overall tensile strength of the end product. In addition, it helps in promoting fine grain size and increasing hardenability through precipitation of nitrides and carbides. Ferro vanadium is manufactured using an electric arc furnace in which scrap iron is melted initially and then it is combined with the mixture of aluminum as well as flux such as calcium fluoride and calcium oxide. It is usually supplied in pallet boxes or in shrink wrapped in super bags. Ferro Vanadium is produced from Vanadium Sludge & usually available in the range with V: 50-85%. Ferro Vanadium acts as universal hardener, strengthener and anti-corrosive additive for steels like high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel, tool steels, as well as other ferrous-based products. Origin of Ferro Vanadium is mainly India and China. Vanadium is applied for alloying titanium, niobium, and chromium-based alloys widely used in aviation, rocket and space engineering. Pure metallic vanadium is used in the nuclear industry and in the manufacture of electronic devices. Ferrovanadium increases hardenability and resistance to tempering. It is used to enhance toughness, resistance of steel to alternating loads. Ferrovanadium is also used to obtain fine-grained structure of steel. Ferro Vanadium was primarily recovered from titanium-bearing magnetite ore processed to produce pig iron. The process produces a slag containing 20% to 24% vanadium pentoxide, which can be further processed to ferrovanadium containing 40% to 50% vanadium. 84% came from ferrovanadium and nearly all of it (99%) went into steel manufacturing. The Ferro Vanadium is used as an alloying agent for the metals iron and steel and also aerospace. Application The most important use of vanadium is as an additive for steel. It is used for the production of rust resistant, spring and high speed tool steels. It is also added to steels to stabilize carbides. Vanadium foil is also used to bond titanium to steel. Due to its low fission neutron cross section vanadium is also used in nuclear applications. The Ferro Vanadium is used as an alloying agent for the metals iron & steel and also aero. Ferro Vanadium is used primarily as an alloying agent for iron and steel and, with the exception of the steel industry, the aerospace market is the primary user of the metal. It is found in deposits of titaniferous magnetite, phosphate rock and uraniferous sandstone and siltstone. Significant amounts are also present in bauxite and carboniferous materials such as crude oil, coal, oil shale and tar sands. Vanadium is usually recovered as a by-product or co-product, and thus world resources of the element are not fully indicative of available supplies. Vanadium is also useful in the production of aerospace titanium alloys and as a catalyst in producing maleic anhydride and sulfuric acid. Most of the ferro vanadium manufactured is utilized in the alloying process used to manufacture hardened steel. Tool, high speed and high alloy steels contain around 20% vanadium, and high strength low alloy (HSLA) steel contains less than 0.5% vanadium. Around 4% of annual vanadium production is as a titanium alloy for aerospace and industrial purposes. This alloy Ti6-4 (4% vanadium) is the workhorse titanium alloy used in aerospace applications. The main demand drivers for ferro-vanadium are global steel production rates and the vanadium consumption rate used within the steel industry. The main vanadium raw material is referred to as vanadium pentoxide. Vanadium can either be derived from mined ore, from steelmaking slags, or from petroleum residues. The leading vanadium-producing nations remained China, Russia, and South Africa. Japan and the United States were thought to be the only countries to recover significant quantities of vanadium from petroleum residues. The major consumption of the ferro vanadium that is being manufactured is used in the process of alloying that is used in the manufacturing of the hardened steel. Hardened steel is used in the applications such as in the manufacturing of bicycles frames, axles, crankshafts, and other very critical components of steel. Thus, the industrial progress of the steel industry will trigger the growth of the ferro vanadium market. In the manufacturing of the high carbon steel alloy, ferro vanadium is used widely. This high carbon steel is used in the production of the medical tools. When vanadium is used in the alloys of titanium they can be used for manufacturing of the high-speed airframes and in jet engines. The overall weight of the steel is reduced by using ferro vanadium; hence, it is used in the manufacturing of the automobiles that are light in weight. Ferrovanadium is an alloy used to strengthen steel. It is a combination of iron and vanadium in which vanadium content varies from 35%-80%. It is used as an additive to enhance the quality of ferroalloys. When added to steel, the products are light in weight with extremely high tensile strength.
