Sericulture (Tasar Silk): Project Opportunities in Jharkhand

PROFILE:

Sericulture is an agro-based industry. It involves rearing of silkworms for the production of raw silk, which is the yarn obtained out of cocoons spun by certain species of insects. The major activities of sericulture comprises of food-plant cultivation to feed the silkworms which spin silk cocoons and reeling the cocoons for unwinding the silk filament for value added benefits such as processing and weaving. Silk is a fine strand of fiber that is a solidified secretion produced by certain caterpillars to encase themselves in the form of cocoons. India is second largest producer of silk. Sericulture industry is looking out for the developments of young age silk worm rearing or chawki rearing. Care of silk worms start from the stage of procurement of silk worm eggs from the grainage itself. Silk worm eggs are distributed to the farmers for commercial rearing when active development of embryo is in progress. The important aspect of young silkworm rearing management are a suitable separate rearing house or room, well maintained mulberry garden with assured irrigation facilities. Sericulture has emerged as a virtual lifeline and a profitable employment avenue for villagers in Maoist-affected areas in India's eastern Jharkhand. Under the aegis of the Jharkhand state industrial department, farmers are beginning to rear silkworms.

RESOURCES:

Jharkhand, much like Chattisgarh and Uttaranchal, is endowed with adequate forest cover. These forests are home to two species of trees -Arjuna (Terminalia Arjuna) & Asan (Terminalia Tomentosa) which are breeding ground for the moth which produces the cocoon from which Tasar yarn is reeled. Jharkhand's forest department is also planning to encourage planting of Arjuna trees in place of the traditional Acacia or Eucalyptus trees. Tussar Food plants are available over an area of 9 lakh hectares. The Singhbhum and Santhalpargana regions are the main silk producing centres in the State. The State is promoting this activity through 28 pilot project centres situated in different areas. Each rearer can rear on an average 200 eggs or Disease Free Laying (DFLs) so the annual demand of commercial seed or egg is of 130 lakh. There are three types of seeds or eggs – Nucleus, Basic seed and Basic seed multiplied to commercial seed.

GOVERNMENT RESOURCES:

Tasar culture is a backbone for Tribal development, and the Government of India, through the Central Silk Board and different State Governments have initiated several developmental and welfare measures for the tribal welfare through it. Jharkhand's forest department is also planning to encourage planting of Arjuna trees in place of the traditional Acacia or Eucalyptus trees. Jharkhand Sericulture Development Institute (JSDI) and Jharkhand Silk Technical Development Institute (JSTDI) are being strengthened to give an impetus to this sector. During the year 2010-11, it is proposed to rear 2.35 lakh tasar nucleus DFLs, 16 lakh of tasar basic DFLs and 96 lakh of commercial DFLs through seed and commercial rearers in the State. It is proposed to be benefited 40,000 -50,000 Tasar farmers through Tasar seed production and its rearing during the year.

Steel Industry

PROFILE:

Steel Industry is a booming industry in the whole world. India’s economic growth is contingent upon the growth of the Indian steel industry. Consumption of steel is taken to be an indicator of economic development. While steel continues to have a stronghold in traditional sectors such as construction, housing and ground transportation, special steels are increasingly used in engineering industries such as power generation, petrochemicals and fertilisers. Indian Steel Industry is more than a century old. India has now emerged as the eighth largest producer of steel in the world with a production capacity of 35MT. Almost all varieties of steel is now produced in India. India has also emerged as a net exporter of steel which shows that Indian steel is being increasingly accepted in the global market. The growth of the steel industry in India is also dependant, to a large extent, on the level of consumption of steel in the domestic market. Steel consumption is significant in housing and infrastructure. In recent years the surge in housing industry of India has led to increase in the domestic demand for steel.

RESOURCES:

Jharkhand emerges as hub for steel companies. The state is endowed with deposits of Iron Ores of both, Hematite & Magnetite. The Hematite deposits are mainly located in the West Singhbhum District and have a resource base exceeding 3700 Million Tonnes. These have been explored only in pockets by large industry houses in their lease hold. There is a very good scope of enlarging this resource base by further exploration. The Magnetite Deposits are located in the East Singhbhum, Latehar & Palamu districts. They comprise lenticular ore bodies as well as Schist rocks with 80 to 36% magnetic. The exploration of these bodies is yet to be taken up. The existing steel mills are sourcing their iron ore (Hematite) from West Singhbhum. The Magnetite ore is being used in heavy media coal washeries & paints. Tata Steel's largest plant is located in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, with its recent acquisitions; the company has become a multinational with operations in various countries. If the interest shown by all the companies, big and small, in Jharkhand's iron ore deposits translates into reality, the state will produce more than half the total steel in India. First Iron & steel factory  is located at Jamshedpur and Largest Steel plant in Asia is Bokaro steel plant.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES:

Under the new industrial policy, iron and steel has been made one of the high priority industries. Price and distribution controls have been removed  as well as foreign direct investment up to 100% (under automatic route) has been permitted.  The Trade Policy has also been liberalized and import and export of iron and steel is freely allowed with no quantitative restrictions on import of iron and steel items. Tariffs on various items of iron and steel have drastically come down since 1991-92 levels and the government is committed to bring them down to the international levels.  With the abolishing of price regulation of iron and steel in 92, the steel prices are market determined. The policy devises a multi-pronged strategy to achieve these targets with following focus areas; removal of supply constraints especially availability  of critical inputs like iron ore; improve cost competitiveness by expanding and strengthening the infrastructure in roads, railways, ports and power; increase exports; meet the additional capital requirements by mobilizing financial resources; promote investments by removing  procedural delays. In addition the policy also addresses challenges arising out of environmental concerns, human resource requirements, R&D, volatile steel prices and the secondary sector.

Iodised Salt

Iodised salt is produced by iodising common salt. Iodine plays an important role in our body-system, as it is utilised by the thyroid gland for the synthesis of thyroxine, which is a hormone essential for the growth and developmental activities. Deficiency of Iodine in the body results in the impairment of synthesis of thyroxine, leading to reduced blood circulating levels. The only iodising agent so far approved for table salt is potassium iodide. It is present at a concentration of (0.01%). The demand of Iodised salt is more than 60 lakh tonnes per year as per the Ministry of Health Survey. To meet this requirement, more production capacities are required. Further due to many parts of our country are deficient in Iodine, Ministry of Industry has started crash programme to Iodise the common salt to check the problem of goitre; deafness, physical deforming and mental retardation. Glass Sheet

Glass is a transparent material, particularly in the visible region of electromagnetic spectrum. The transparent and colouration have made the glasses best suitable for decorative and illumination purposes in the early days of their invention. Glass is a non-crystalline solid. This means that the regular periodic arrangement of motifs (groups of atoms, molecules or ions) is absent in glasses. The crystalline characteristic of long-range order of motifs is lacked and short-range order prevails in glassy materials. Glasses are formed by quenching a material in liquid state sufficiently fast so that atoms cannot re-arrange themselves in a crystalline form and form glasses. Glass sheets and plate glass can be clear or transparent, or treated with other elements to give an opalescent or iridescent quality. Which facilitates the development of new technologies and ensure a high quality product. Resistant glass is made by using layers of glass sheets or by using a transparent polycarbonate thermoplastic. Dichroic glass is glass that has been layered with metal oxides to give the glass a unique color and texture. Tempered glass is stronger and more durable than regular glass sheets and plate glass. It is used in a wide variety of products, including vehicle windows and specialty items like scuba diving equipment, marine vehicles, and some cookware. Tempered glass is made by heating and then rapidly cooling the glass to induce residual compressive stresses in the surface of the glass.

Denim Denim has been playing a dual role in India — serving both as a major fashion trend and helping to break down barriers since jeans are worn by consumers across all of the country’s economic strata and in both urban and rural areas. Men’s Denim Segment: Men’s denim enjoy the largest share and are poised to grow at a high CAGR of 14 per cent over the next decade. Until a few years ago, denim was popular with men in the urban cities only, however, it has now gradually become popular in the semi-urban and rural markets also. Growing awareness and an increasing affinity for global fashion have led to this development. Denim is considered the most versatile fabric for men with multiple applications over casual wear, work wear and every day wear. Women’s Denim Segment: Among Indian women, jeans or denim trousers are the most popular articles. Women across different age brackets and spanning all shapes and sizes like to wear denim as it is comfortable, functional and durable. Denim is also gaining popularity in athleisure form among women owing to the comfort provided by stretch denims. Women who are not at ease with western wear have taken up wearing jeans by pairing them with Indian ethnic wear like kurtis. This mix and match style is gradually picking up, particularly among women in small towns and those who come from a traditional background and is likely to further fuel the growth of the segment. Kids’ Denim Segment: This is the smallest segment in the domestic market, but is expected to grow at a high rate primarily due to the availability of the products led by the innovations in the industry for natural, hygienic and flexible fabrics. Growth of the organized retail sector: The denim wear market is dominated by unbranded denim products who constitute 60 per cent of the market and thus tend to give intense competition to branded denim players. However, with many private labels and international brands entering the Indian apparel market, the inclination towards branded denim wear is increasing in consumers. Denim makes up for a sizable share of India’s total textile exports and it is expected that production may increase to 1.5 billion metres by 2020.Indian denim industry is primarily aiming to increase its share in exports, which currently pegged at 35% of production compared to domestic consumption of remaining 65% of the produce. Denim jeans are a type of trousers that are made of denim or dungaree cloth. Denim jeans are very popular among teenagers and hold a major share as a fashion item in the clothing industry. They are considered as casual wear and are donned by women, men, and children. The tremendous popularity of denim jeans and the rising demand for them is the major factor fueling the growth of the global denim jeans market. On the geographical front, North America accounts for the largest share in the overall denim jeans market, followed by Europe and Asia Pacific. However, the introduction of yoga pants and other active wear is expected to hamper the growth of the market in the forecast period. Readymade Garments (Jean Trousers & Shirts), Starting a Clothing Industry Readymade garment industry has occupied a unique place in the industrial scenario of our country by generating substantial export earnings and creating lot of employment. Its contribution to industrial production, employment and export earnings are very significant. This industry provides one of the basic necessities of life. The employment provided by it is a source of livelihood for millions of people. It also provides maximum employment with minimum capital investment. Readymade garments are the choice of urban people. It is also gaining wider acceptance in semi-urban and rural areas. The huge charges made by tailors and delay in delivery has made people to switch over to readymade garments. In domestic market and export market, it has made spectacular progress in the last decade. This industry is becoming very vibrant and lot of foreign investment pouring in this industry because of low risk and high earning nature of this industry. Indian garment industry has played a unique role in Indian economy. The garment sector is the largest employer after agriculture and its importance in India’s economy is recognized for its contribution to industrial production and export earnings. Indian textile industry is a self-reliant industry, from the production of raw materials to the delivery of finished products, with substantial value-addition at each stage of processing; it contributes much to the country’s economy. The textile and apparel industry is one of the leading segments of the Indian economy and the largest source of foreign exchange earnings for India. The readymade garment sector is currently the largest contributor to India’s total textile and apparel exports, accounting for roughly 41%. Employment in India’s readymade garment industry now has around 12 million people, making it the largest employment provider for all sectors. This year, this number will increase to 12.9 million. Most of the workers employed in the readymade garment industry in India are women and mainly contributes about 4% of the Gross Domestic Product or GDP of India. Production of PROM (Phosphate Rich Organic Manure)

Production of PROM (Phosphate Rich Organic Manure): An Emerging Biofertilizer, Manufacturing of PROM Fertilizer - Toward a Sustainable Agriculture Phosphate rich organic manure is a type of fertilizer used as an alternative to di ammonium phosphate and single super phosphate Phosphorus is required by all plants but is limited in soil, creating a problem in agriculture. In many areas phosphorus must be added to soil for the extensive plant growth that is desired for crop production. The solubility depends upon PH of the soil, ambient condition and bacteria present in the soil. Phosphate Rich Organic Manure is produced by co-composting high-grade (32% P2O5 +/- 2%) rock phosphate in very fine size (say 80% finer than 54 microns). Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM) is a value added product produced by co-compositing high-grade rock phosphate in fine size with organic matter collected from various sources such as FYM, straw of paddy or wheat, pressmud, karanj cake or waste from fruit industries and distillery etc. Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) and nitrogen fixing bacteria are added to improve the efficiency. Production of phosphorus rich organic manure (PROM) by composting of press mud and distillery waste with rock phosphate into a value added product standardized to contain 18% P2O5 with 22% moisture is a highly promising, natural, better and cheaper substitute of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP). The agronomic evaluation of PROM on paddy crop resulted in an enhancement of 29.41% yield over the DAP. As the famers are not much familiar with PROM, still use traditional fertilisers for their crops. This is very serious problem for all, these fertiliser harm the soil as well as environment, livestock, humans etc. Excessive use of chemical fertiliser such as Single Super Phosphate (SSP), Diammonium phosphate (DAP), Monoammonium phosphate (MAP) etc. in agriculture mitigates the number of free living beneficial microorganisms; those are directly or indirectly useful for any crop. Because the amount of these fertiliser ustilised by plant upto 30% only. The remaining amount of these fertilisers accumulated in the soil and constantly increases the soil pH. PROM is manufactured and marketed in India by different agro Industries. PROM is produced by co-composting of high grade (32% P2O5) rock phosphate in very fine size with organic manure such as Compost, Vermi-compost, Cow dung, Soy meal, domestic kitchen waste etc. The efficiency of PROM is totally depended on the particle size of rock phosphate. More the fine of rock phosphate, more the efficiency of PROM. Rock phosphate is soluble phosphate and it is effective in both acidic and alkaline soil. The specific advantages of PROM are: 1) The process of production of PROM is highly cost- effective as it is a low energy process that does not demand high temperature or high pressure (operates at ordinary temperature and pressure), needs no chemical catalyst and does not consume any valuable chemicals; 2) The raw rock phosphate ore, since is biochemically converted to soluble phosphates, can be fed directly to plants; 3) PROM is (if not, more) effective in agriculture as compared to synthetic fertilisers such as single superphosphate (SSP), di ammonium phosphate (DAP) or monoammonium phosphate (MAP) as evident from successful field studies performed Benefits of PROM 1) Contains 3 nutrients –1. Phosphorous 2. Organic carbon 3. Nitrogen 2) Acts as alternative to DAP and makes soil soft and enriched with nutrients for Long time 3) Supplies phosphorus to the second crop planted in a treated area as efficiently as the first 4) Can be produced using acidic waste solids recovered from the discharge of biogas plants, thus makes environment sound 5) Due to organic manure presence, leaching and runoff is prevented 6) Production of PROM is highly cost- effective as it is a low energy process that does not demand high temperature or high pressure (operates at ordinary temperature and pressure), needs no chemical catalyst and does not consume any valuable chemicals 7) Provides micro-nutrients like cobalt, copper, zinc along with primary nutrients. 8) PROM is very effective as phosphatic fertilizer even in saline soils where DAP completely failed. 9) Enhances the growth of soil microorganism that assist the dissolution of P either applied to the soil or naturally present in the soil. The use of PROM will reduce the cost of fertilization to the farmers and will also result into the conservation of phosphate mineral, a non-renewable resource due to the high residual effect. The agronomic efficacy of this new P-fertilizer is higher than that of the complex phosphatic fertilizers available in the market today. ‘PROM’ is suitable to neutral and alkaline soils, which will prove to be a boon to the Indian farmers. In the long run, this product will be a winner as it has significant price advantage compared to the other chemicals. Global Organic Fertilizers market registered volume consumption of nearly 18.23 million tons, amounting to approximately USD5.87 billion in 2017. The global organic fertilizers market is projected to witness healthy growth at a CAGR of 7%, reaching more than USD8.25 billion through 2023. The changing perception of farmers and end users towards environment friendly farming methods is driving the demand for organic fertilizers worldwide. The various advantages offered at cheaper prices are escalating the consumption of organic fertilizers over chemical fertilizers globally. In addition to this, constructive government policies pertaining to subsidized prices, wastage reduction, limitations on usage of non-biodegradable raw materials are further influencing the global organic fertilizers market. Mango Pulp with Cold Storage

Mango is one of the most important tropical fruits in the world and currently ranked 5th in total world production among the major fruit crops. As mango is a seasonal fruit, about 20% of fruits are processed for products such as puree, nectar, leather, pickles, canned slices, and chutney. These products experience worldwide popularity and have also gained importance in national and international market. During processing of mango, by-products such as peel and kernel are generated. Mango Pulp is prepared from selected varieties of Fresh Mango Fruit. Fully matured Mangoes are harvested, quickly transported to the fruit processing plant, inspected and washed. Selected high quality fruits go to the controlled ripening chambers; Fully Ripened Mango fruits are then washed, blanched, pulped, deseeded, centrifuged, homogenized, concentrated when required, thermally processed and aseptically filled maintaining sterility. Currently, mango exports from the West African nation occupy second place in the region and over the last three years, this particular sector has witnessed great growth. The export of Senegal’s mangoes has greatly increased over the years. From 8,500 tons about 3 years ago and today we are exporting about 16,500 tons. In the countries of the region, production of export mangoes is spread over four months (from March to June), while in Senegal, production runs for 6 months (from May to October) with a window Export of 3 to 4 months. Depending on the region, the harvest takes place in May-June-July and in July-August-September. On the European market Senegal mainly exports mangoes variety Kent. The coloring of the fruit is exceptional: it is a major asset for the Senegal Origin. The year 2000 has been the turning point for Senegalese mango exports being the beginning of an ever-increasing export towards Europe; in just a few years, Senegal has become the second most important West African source of mangoes, after Ivory Coast. Senegal’s position on the European export market is ascertained with two very popular varieties: Kent and (to a lesser extent) Keith.
