Best Business Opportunities in Bhutan - Identification and Selection of right Project, Thrust areas for Investment, Industry Startup and Entrepreneurship Projects

The economy of Bhutan, one of the world's smallest and least developed countries, is based on agriculture and forestry, which provide the main livelihood for more than 60% of the population. Agriculture consists largely of subsistence farming and animal husbandry. The economy is closely aligned with India's through strong trade and monetary links and dependence on India's financial assistance. Most production in the industrial sector is of the cottage industry type. Most development projects, such as road construction, rely on Indian migrant labour. Model education, social, and environment programs are underway with support from multilateral development organisations.

The industrial sector is in a nascent stage, and though most production comes from cottage industry, larger industries are being encouraged and some industries such as cement, steel, and ferroalloy have been set up. Most development projects, such as road construction, rely on Indian contract labour. Agricultural produce includes rice, chilies, dairy (some yak, mostly cow) products, buckwheat, barley, root crops, apples, and citrus and maize at lower elevations. Industries include cement, wood products, processed fruits, alcoholic beverages and calcium carbide.

Bhutan’s hydropower industry accounts for 32% of the nation’s economy. The dependency on a single sector is a potential risk factor, the report states. As an alternative revenue generation sector, the government is promoting tourism, which also hopes to generate employment. Like in most countries, the Cottage and Small Industry (CSI) play a pivotal role in the overall industrial economy of Bhutan.

Business Sectors

Agriculture Industry

Agriculture in Bhutan has a dominant role in the Bhutan's economy. Approximately 80% of the population of Bhutan are involved in agriculture. Over 95% of the earning women in the country work in the agricultural sector. Majority of the refugees in this Himalayan nation are also employed in the agricultural sector. Agriculture in Bhutan is characterized by its labor-intensive nature with relatively low intensity of farm inputs.

Major crops cultivated in Bhutan are maize and rice. Maize accounts for 49% of total domestic cereal cultivation, and rice accounts for 43%. Rice is the major staple crop. Agriculture in the country includes cultivation of wheat and other minor cereal crops. Paddy is the primary crop in those regions where proper irrigation is available. Apart from paddy, other crops like wheat, barley, oil seeds, potato and different vegetables are also cultivated in these lands. The primary goals of agriculture in Bhutan are to raise the per capita income of the people living in rural areas, to enhance self-sufficiency in staple crops, and to increase the productivity per unit of farm labor and agricultural land.

Minerals and Mining

The country’s mineral industry was small and insignificant to its economy and was dominated by the production of cement, coal, dolomite, gypsum, and limestone. Known resources included deposits of beryl, copper, graphite, lead, mica, pyrite, tin, tungsten, and zinc. Mining is one of the fastest growing industries in Bhutan generating average revenue of 54 million U.S. dollars or contributing 3 percent to country's GDP.

Industrial mineral products were the primary output of Bhutan’s mineral industry and included dolomite, graphite, marble and slate, and sand and stone. The production of a variety of stone materials and energy fuels had been increasing steadily in recent years and corresponded to the increased demand for these commodities in the construction sector. While major exports of minerals are made in raw form, Bhutan processes some of its minerals into value-added products such as calcium carbide, cement, and ferrosilicon.

Accordingly, Bhutan’s policies on mining and quarrying consider inter-generational equity. This is important since minerals constitute vital raw materials for the mineral based manufacturing industries and are a major resource for economic development of a country. Bhutan is endowed with rich mineral resources that has allowed for the sustainable growth of a mineral based industry and export base. This mineral resource exploitation and value addition has helped generate employment and can contribute towards poverty alleviation.

Livestock Industry

Livestock farming practices continue to evolve in response to rapid modernization and growing economic opportunities in the Bhutan Himalaya. Animal husbandry is an integral part of farming activities in Bhutan and, especially in the high altitude or alpine regions, animal husbandry forms virtually the sole economic activity. The consumption of animal products is an important element of the Bhutanese diet.

Livestock is an integral part in all Bhutanese farming systems. While most households rear livestock for home consumption, livestock farming and nomadic herding are the predominant activities in the alpine and cool temperate zones. Over 80 per cent of rural households own cattle. Other significant livestock include poultry (reared by about 65% of rural households), pigs (38%), horses (23%), goats (15%) and yaks (2%). Inadequate pasture land and poor access to markets are significant constraints to improving production, but increasing urban demand for livestock products is encouraging farmers near urban areas to keep better breeds and improve feed and fodder management. In the livestock sector artificial insemination covers not only Jersey breeds that are high yielding but also for the production of Jatsa and Jatsam that are local high yielding varieties.

The indigenous cattle are the most important livestock genetic resources for food, animal energy and household income in Bhutan. Poultry farming is one of the important livestock farming components in Bhutan.

Geotextiles (for Road Construction) Manufacturing Plant.

Geotextiles (for Road Construction) Manufacturing Plant. Production of Geotextiles. Opportunities in Technical Textiles Sector A geotextile is any permeable textile material used with foundation, soil, rock, earth, etc. that is an integral part of a constructed, structure or system. Geotextiles were used in roadway construction in the days of the Pharaohs to stabilize roadways and their edges. These early geotextiles were made of natural fibers, fabrics or vegetation mixed with soil to improve road quality, particularly when roads were made on unstable soil. Geotextiles are large sheets that save our earth soil in rainy days & binds strongly. It is mostly used for filtration and separation in the road constructions. It protects from migration of small gravels & sand aggregates. Geotextiles are thin & strong membrane fabric which is used to reinforce soil & prevent from damage. It improve & stability and decreases the process of wind & water erosion. It helps to prevent the erosion of soil but allows the water to drain off. A geotextiles made from synthetic or natural fibers associated with soil thin pieces. It improves soil characteristics such as Friction or movement restraint, Support of loads and Changes in bearing failure plane. When a geotextile is between two different soil materials, the function of separation plays an important role. The geotextile will separate dissimilar materials so the required soil characteristics can be obtained. The main purpose of this type of geotextile is that when water gets into the soil strata, the geotextile will prevent soils from mixing. For example, in road construction, you might want to keep fine sub-grade aggregate separate from the coarse aggregates of the bottom layer. The drainage characteristics will be kept intact, preventing the fine aggregate from filling the voids between the larger aggregate. These types of geotextiles have a special thickness and permeability characteristics to prevent soil contamination and allow water to flow through without damaging the strength and structural capacity of the road. Uses ? Unpaved and paved roads in airport runways ? Landfills and stone base courses ? Sidewalks and sand drainage layers ? Parking lots and curb areas ? Green areas and recreational facilities ? Retaining wall structures ? Duct banks and pipe trenches Geotextiles are commonly used to improve soils over which roads, embankments, pipelines, and earth retaining structures are built. There are several types of geotextile material, including open-mesh, warp-knitted, and closed fabric or non-woven textiles. Different geotextile materials are specified for various characteristics, such as separation, filtration, drainage, reinforcement, sealing, and protection. Stabilized Insoluble Sulfur Insoluble sulfur (IS) is a type of sulfur polymer, which is insoluble in CS2 and is a good rubber vulcanizing agent. There are two types of IS, oil-filled and non-oil-filled. The production of IS usually adopts a high temperature method, which causes the liquid or gas sulfur to spray into cold liquids to obtain IS with a concentration of 30-60wt%. To obtain high concentrations of IS, solvent has been used to extract the soluble sulfur, followed by filling with oil to obtain oil-filled. Insoluble sulfur is an important rubber additive agent. It improves product quality, wear ability and resistance to both fatigue and ageing. In addition to being universally recognized as the best vulcanizing agent, it is widely used in the manufacture of tire, rubber pipe, shoes, cable and wire insulating materials, latex, and all kinds of automobile rubber parts and is also a necessary component of belt tires. Therefore, due to its non-blooming characteristic, insoluble sulfur is widely used in the manufacture of radial rubber and other synthetic rubber products, also in the light-colored rubber products in which common sulfur is incorporated in high proportion. Sulfur is stabilized in a form wholly or partially insoluble in carbon disulphide by incorporating therewith a dixanthogen of the formula where R and R' are each independently an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group and may be substituted by halogen or alkoxy and n is 2 or 4. The insoluble sulphur can for example be plastic sulfur or white sulfur or substantially wholly insoluble sulphur derived therefrom. The sulphur is particularly useful in the vulcanization of rubber. Insoluble sulphur is primarily used in the rubber industry. Its advantage over ground natural sulphur is that it does not cause bloom, and that it does not dissolve and migrate in rubber. The S8 ring molecules present in soluble sulphur at room temperature open at temperatures above 158 °C, allowing chains of sulphur to combine with one another to form polymeric sulphur. Insoluble sulphur is produced by quenching the polymeric melt at low temperatures, preventing the reversion into S8 rings, leaving the polymer structure meta-stable at room temperature. Insoluble Sulphur is mainly used in tyre industry. The Indian market for Insoluble Sulfur is growing more than the growth rate for the tyre industry due to increasing share of radial tyres in commercial vehicles which consume more Insoluble Sulphur. With the revival of the global economy, the auto sector has picked up significantly resulting in huge demands and huge growth in the auto companies. This has trickled down to the auto ancillary sector and hence the demand for Insoluble Sulphur is growing at a robust pace and this trend is expected to continue in the coming year as new tyre capacities are being added in India. Global Insoluble sulphur market is primarily used in the rubber industry. Global Insoluble Sulfur Market is expected to grow at a significant CAGR in the upcoming years as the scope, product types and its applications are increasing across the globe. Insoluble Sulfur is mainly used in the rubber industry. The advantage over the ground sulfur is that it does not cause blooming and is soluble in rubber. In addition the insoluble sulfur additives can be added to more fully restore the carbon black in the iron and suppress and eliminate the production process of nitrosamines, the protection of the environment plays a significant role. Globally demand for insoluble sulphur is expected to grow at 5.2% CAGR in CY15-20E with demand in India growing at a CAGR of 10%+ due to robust automobile demand & increasing radicalization of tyres particularly in the CV space. Welding Electrodes In welding an electric current is conducted through an electrode which is used to join the parent metals. When you keep electrode tip near the parent metal electric current jumps from the electrode tip to the parent metal. The main purpose of electrodes used in welding is to create an electric. An electrode is used to conduct current through a work piece to fuse two pieces together. Depending upon the process the electrode is either consumable in the case of gas metal arc welding or shielded metal arc welding or non-consumable such as in gas tungsten arc welding. Welding is a fabrication or sculptural process that joins materials, usually metals by causing fusion, which do not melt the base metal. A filler material is typically added to the joint to form a pool of molten material (the weld pool) that cools to form a joint that is usually stronger than the base material. Pressure may also be used in conjunction with heat or by itself to produce a weld. Welding also requires a form of shield to protect the filler metals or melted metals from being contaminated or oxidized. Welding Wires and Welding Electrode is the basic consumable material. In 2023 the consumption of Welding Wires and Welding Electrode is estimated to be 8253 K MT. On product prices the slow downward trend in recent years will maintain in the future. The worldwide market for Welding Wires and Welding Electrode is expected to grow at a CAGR of roughly 2.5% over the next five years will reach 21700 million US$ in 2024, from 18700 million US$ in 2019. The market is majorly driven by growing demand from construction industry. Rapid urbanization and infrastructure development are the key factors propelling the growth of the construction industry which in turn is projected to boost the demand for welding products. Welding technology is extensively used in the construction of pipelines, bridges, buildings, and other engineering projects for infrastructure development. Caffeine from Tea Waste Caffeine belongs to a family of naturally occurring compounds known as xanthines. The xanthine’s, which come from plants, are possibly the oldest known stimulants. Caffeine is widely used in pharmaceuticals as free base and mixtures, such as 'Citrated Caffeine’s caffeine and sodium benzoate. Caffeine is very much used as a stimulant of the central nervous system and also as a diuretic, although its action as a diuretic is weaker than that of the polyline. Caffeine is widely used in pharmaceuticals as free base and mixtures, such as citrated caffeine and sodium benzoate. Tea waste or coffee beans, limewater and trichloroethylene are the starting raw materials for its manufacture. Tea waste contains 3-4 percent caffeine. Caffeine is very useful as stimulant of the central nervous system. It gives definite relief from fatigue and neuralgia. It is also used in headaches originating from eye strains. Its most important physiological action is that on the kidney causing an increased secretion of urine. Caffeine is the principal alkaloid constituent of tea, coffee and some other beverages. As the production of soft drinks increases the demand of caffeine is also likely to increase. Branded pocket teas, instant teas etc. are now the name of the game to boost sales and build up a strong brand loyalty. Tata tea dominates the sector with few foreign big holding in Assam and in the South. There is however no question this industry has a decisive future and a decisive hold on the rest of the plantation and export sectors. There is about 10% demand growth increase per annum. Up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day appears to be safe for most healthy adults. That's roughly the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee, 10 cans of cola or two energy shot drinks. The global caffeine market is predicted to expand at a steady CAGR of around 2.5% by 2022. Aluminium Foil Aluminum foil or tin foil, is a paper-thin, shiny sheet of aluminum metal. It's made by rolling large slabs of aluminum until they are less than 0.2 mm thick. It's used industrially for a variety of purposes, including packing, insulation and transportation. Foil made from a thin leaf of tin was commercially available before its aluminium counterpart. Tin foil is stiffer than aluminium foil. It tends to give a slight tin taste to food wrapped in it, which is a major reason it has largely been replaced by aluminium and other materials for wrapping food. The aluminum foil packaging market is expected to witness a CAGR of 3.27% over the forecast period (2019-2024). The growing demand for ready-to-eat confectioneries and pharmaceutical products is expected to be the primary driver for the household aluminum foil market. One factor which is assisting the growth of the household aluminum foil industry is government regulations toward food safety and quality standards, which influences the manufacturers to develop effective packaging solutions that prevent food contamination. Aluminum pouches are increasingly being used in the food and beverage industry, due to their sturdy nature and offering resistance to dust, moisture, chemicals, and water. The increasing demand for fast-moving consumer goods, coupled with the increasing economy, is expected to lead to the high growth of the market. Aluminum foil is increasingly being merged with flexible films to create lightweight packages. The packaging of pet food, tuna, coffee, and soups alone produces 13 billion packages across the globe, emerging as viable alternatives for conventional plastic packaging. Concerns over the patient perception and reception of the AI technologies is expected to hinder the market growth. Production of Iodized Table Salt. Manufacturing Opportunities in Iodised Salt.

Production of Iodized Table Salt. Manufacturing Opportunities in Iodised Salt. Iodised salt (also spelled iodized salt) is table salt mixed with a minute amount of various salts of the element iodine. The ingestion of iodine prevents iodine deficiency. Worldwide, iodine deficiency affects about two billion people and is the leading preventable cause of intellectual and developmental disabilities. Deficiency also causes thyroid gland problems, including endemic goiter. In many countries, iodine deficiency is a major public health problem that can be cheaply addressed by purposely adding small amounts of iodine to the sodium chloride salt. Iodine is a micronutrient and dietary mineral that is naturally present in the food supply in some regions, especially near sea coasts, but is generally quite rare in the Earth's crust, since iodine is a so-called heavy element and abundance of chemical elements generally declines with greater atomic mass. Where natural levels of iodine in the soil are low and the iodine is not taken up by vegetables, iodine added to salt provides the small but essential amount of iodine needed by humans. Salt is existent in all animal and vegetable life and is coeval with life itself. It is a basic element in food of any living being. Salt as a chemical is of significant importance. Salt was the name originally given to the residue left by evaporation of sea water. Afterwards the name was employed to include all substances held in solution in sea water. Chemists ultimately extended the name to cover all combinations of an acid and a base. Sodium chloride (NaCl) now called common salt, is an example of the simplest type of chemical salt. Sodium chloride is an essential constituent of the body fluids and is responsible for a number of vital functions in the body. Market Outlook The global Iodized Salt market was million US$ in 2018 and is expected to million US$ by the end of 2025 growing at a CAGR of between 2019 and 2025. The market is dynamic and highly fragmented with the presence of numerous small and domestic players occupying major chunk of the global market share. The flavored salts market is influenced directly by the trends in the food industry, particularly the fast food and meat industries. Flavored salt is no different than regular table salt, except that it contains other herbs and spices to provide more complex flavors. The market is considered a recession-proof market as consumers can use flavored salts for home cooking as well. The market growth is the limitation of downstream market. As large demand of healthy products at home and abroad, many companies began to enter the field. Currently, the Iodate Salt industry is not only begin to transit to Iodate Salt products, while still extend in the resource-rich land and downstream industry chain. Growing malnutrition concerns among children and adults along with increasing demand for nutritious diet will drive fortified salts market growth. Rising health risks due to low consumption of iron, and iodine will fuel production penetration. Increasing occurrence of miscarriages, gestational hypertension and neurological disorders including cretinism among newborns will drive industry growth. Appropriate growth and movement of unborn child is among the key factor fueling demand among women. Globally, industry foresees high demand from iodine owing to its medicinal properties in treating various diseases. Dental hygiene has become a key concern especially among children. 42% of the children aged between 2 to 11 years suffers from dental caries in their primary teeth and 21% in their permanent teeth. Benefits including healing ulcers in the gums, cleans plaque and whitens teeth will stimulate market demand. Due to increasing shortage of iodine in developing countries, growing use of iodine in various applications like X-ray contract media, government initiatives to increase the use of iodine in human nutrition and increase the use of iodine in animal feed additives. Based on source the market has been segmented into Underground Brines, Recycling, Seaweeds and Caliche Ore. The Caliche Ore dominated the market since removal of iodine from caliche is economically possible. Europe & CIS region dominated the market for iodine due to increasing awareness concerning iodine deficiency and implementation of by global organizations such as WHO to make consumption of iodized salts.
