In-Depth Market Research
More and more companies are transitioning to more sustainable energy solutions like biomass pellets made from biowaste, which act as sustainable fuel substitutes and are even more promising than coal, LPG, and other fossil fuels. For biomass pellet manufacturing companies, this is more than just a business opportunity, it's a chance to make a positive impact on the planet and to help start a fossil-free future for everyone on Earth.
Market Overview
The biomass pellet business is still relatively new, and the more it's embraced, the more growth will occur. New biomass pellet businesses are driven by increasing regulations to reduce the use of fossil fuels, increasing use of renewable energy, and increasing fuel prices due to a global recession. The biomass pellet business as a whole is projected to increase in value from 10 billion dollars in 2021 to 16 billion dollars by 2030, with the annual growth rate expected to be between 7 and 8 percent.
More than 500 million tonnes of agricultural biowaste are produced every year in India, and India is also notable for having nearly 32 percent of its energy mix for biomass energy produced. Gove
ment initiatives in India like the W2W (Waste to Wealth) Mission, the National Bioenergy Programme, and the RPO (Renewable Purchase Obligation) also fuel the potential for market growth on the subcontinent. The market is also extremely viable in other parts of the world, such as Europe, where countries like Japan and South Korea also import biowaste pellets to achieve their carbon neutrality goals.
Why Startups Should Choose This Business Idea
- The Valuation of By-Products: The conversion of agricultural biomass (residue from cotton, rice, wheat, etc.), sawdust, coconut dust, and husks into high-calorific value pellets is a true value addition.
- Worldwide and Local Demand: Power plants, industrial units, and institutional boilers are gradually switching to biomass pellets. This is due to their clean combustion and meeting emission control standards. Thus, it's a perfect time for India to grow its renewable energy portfolio.
- Policies and Benefits from Startups: Various schemes from the MSME and PMEGP provide entrepreneurs with up to 35 percent subsidized financing for plant and machinery, along with carbon credits and subsidized financing.
- Potential for Export: Demand for biomass pellets is especially high in the Middle East, Europe, Japan, and South Korea. India produces and provides the necessary agricultural residue and the required logistics.
- Sustainable Business: More and more businesses are being influenced by Sustainable Responsible Investing programs. A biomass pellet plant serves these needs and aligns with ESG (Environmental, Social, Gove
ance) guidelines, as well as circular economy principles.
Market Trends and Analysis
There is an undeniable and unchanging shift toward clean energy in industrial boilers and thermal power plants. More and more of these devices are being equipped with units for the co-firing of biomass pellets and coal to achieve and maintain environmental criteria.• Technological advancements: Automated pellet mills and improved torrefied pellets (high-energy-density variants) are increasing efficiency and shelf-life.
• Rising Carbon Prices: With the proliferation of carbon trading globally, the economic benefits of biomass energy become more pronounced.
• Circular Economy: The transformation of municipal solid waste and agro-industrial by-products into energy pellets is a case of ‘waste to wealth.’
Manufacturing Process
The transformation of bio waste into biomass pellets involves a number of steps.
- Rough Material Collection: The collection of agricultural by-products, wood chips, sawdust, coconut shells, sugarcane bagasse, etc. is done at farms and sawmills.
- Drying: Using a rotary or belt dryer, the material is dried so that the moisture content is below 12% before pellet formation.
- Grinding / Size Reduction: Using a hammer mill or crusher, the biomass is converted into a fine powder of 3 to 5 mm.
- Pelletizing: The biomass powder is fed into the pellet mill, where it is compressed through the die holes at high pressure. A natural binder is lignin, which is part of the biomass.
- Cooling: Using a counter-flow cooler, the hot pellets are cooled to harden and retain their shape.
- Screening and Packaging: The separating of fines and packing for dispatching in bags or bulk containers.
Establishing a biomass pellet production facility from bio waste is a sustainable approach and an economically successful initiative. It meets the principles of global sustainability. Increasing energy requirements, gove
ment support, and growing export markets provide assured opportunities for new businesses to convert agricultural waste into sustainable profit.
