| Methionine is an amino acid. Amino acids are the building blocks that our bodies use to make proteins. Methyl mercaptan is reacted with acrolein to produce beta methyl thiopropionaldehyde, which is reacted with hydrogen cyanide to produce alpha hydroxy gamma methyl thio butyro nitrile, which on treatment with ammonia followed by hydrolysis, yields methionine. All industrial producers of DL-methionine start with the same raw materials, acrolein, methyl mercaptan, hydrogen cyanide and ammonia or ammonium carbonate. The multi step process can be carried out in batches or continuously. APPLICATIONS DL-METHIONINE IS ADDED AS AN INGREDIENT TO PET FOODS Study on rats showed methionine supplementation in the diet specifically increases mitochondrial ROS production and mitochondrial DNA oxidative damage in rat liver mitochondria offering a plausible mechanism for its hepatotoxicity. DL-Methionine is used as a supplement to organic poultry feed. Dl-Methionine in Food Production Dl-Methionine is widely used as nutritional supplement in food production.
