These 49 manufacturing business ideas for India sit in seven sectors, each with the main material you buy and the first customers to approach. Start from the customer side: the easiest first units sell to businesses that reorder weekly, such as bakeries, restaurants, retailers and online sellers.

Food ideas need a food-safety registration or licence, and the turnover limits for both changed on 1 April 2026. Ideas excluded from the government's subsidised loan scheme for new units, such as meat processing and thin polythene bags, are left out. Pick three ideas, get machinery quotes for each, and test a sample batch with five buyers before committing money.

What a low-investment unit really costs: a paper cup unit, line by line

A model paper cup unit in the UP MSME pre-feasibility report costs ₹21.03 lakh, and machinery is only ₹7.97 lakh of it.

Cost head

₹ lakh

Plant and machinery

7.97

Building and civil work

5.00

Furniture and fixtures

2.50

Working capital

5.56

Total project cost

21.03

It assumes one machine making 50 cups a minute, ten workers and 300 working days. Year-one sales of ₹40.50 lakh give a gross profit of 22.8% but only ₹3.79 lakh after interest, depreciation and tax, about 9% of sales. Break-even is 44% of capacity.

Scope moves cost more than capacity does. The NPCS project report for combined paper cups, plates and corrugated boxes puts the cost of project at ₹292 lakh, about 14 times the unit above.

On the model's figures, profit after tax is about ₹32,000 a month in year one and ₹68,000 in year five. Reaching ₹2 lakh a month takes several units or a larger plant, and the model's prices are assumptions to replace with your own quotes.

[Trust note] NPCS has prepared project reports since 1994, more than 5,000 across 40+ industries. Every figure in them shifts with capacity, location and technology.

Which of these ideas can a PMEGP loan finance?

The Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) pairs a bank loan with a margin money subsidy for new units. As of October 2026, a district industries centre guide sets the manufacturing project limit at ₹50 lakh for applicants who passed Class 8 and ₹10 lakh for those who did not. Subsidy depends on applicant and location:

Subsidy, rural

General category

10%

15%

25%

Special category (women, SC/ST/OBC, minorities and others)

Only new units qualify. The exclusion list rules out meat and intoxicant items, cultivation, polythene carry bags below 20 microns and recycled-plastic containers, so none appear above. The guide dates from January 2026; confirm limits on the PMEGP portal before applying.

What does a food unit need after the 1 April 2026 change?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) order dated 13 March 2026 sets registration for turnover up to ₹1.5 crore, a state licence above ₹1.5 crore and up to ₹50 crore, and a central licence above ₹50 crore, all from 1 April 2026. The earlier registration limit was ₹12 lakh, according to a law-firm note on the order. For the seven food ideas above, first-year turnover decides which applies, so record sales monthly from day one.

Your next four weeks: from shortlist to priced unit

1.      Week one: shortlist three ideas where you can name five buyers.

2.      Week two: ask two suppliers per idea for machinery quotes, power load and floor area.

3.      Week three: make a sample batch and ask each buyer what quantity they would reorder.

4.      Week four: price your unit line by line, as in the paper cup table, then decide on a loan.

[CTA box] An NPCS project report for any idea here covers the market survey, plant and machinery with suppliers, raw materials, manpower, project cost, working capital, profitability, break-even and a five to ten year cash flow, in the format banks and schemes such as PMEGP typically ask for. It is meant for the stage when a lender wants numbers specific to your project.

Frequently asked questions

Which manufacturing business can I start with ₹50,000?

Very few machine-based units do. The model paper cup unit needs ₹7.97 lakh for machinery alone. With ₹50,000, pay a small unit to make a sample batch and test it with five buyers before buying a machine.

Which manufacturing business has a 50% profit margin?

None in this list reliably does. The model paper cup unit earns about 23% gross profit in year one and about 9% after interest, depreciation and tax. A 50% claim is most likely a gross figure before overheads, so ask for the full cost sheet.

What manufacturing business has a 90% success rate?

None does, and a figure like 90% would need a published study behind it. A better test: if five buyers each place a repeat order for your sample batch, demand is real. If not, change the product before buying machinery.

Which manufacturing idea suits a first-time entrepreneur?

Pick the idea where you can finish a sample batch in your first month. Food pastes, soap, candles and paper cups use short processes and standard machines. Moulding and metal parts take longer to master and usually need a technical partner.
