A fastener manufacturing consultant helps you plan a plant that makes bolts, nuts, screws, washers and rivets for automotive, construction and machinery buyers. Most units combine cold forging, thread rolling, heat treatment and surface coating. Demand comes from auto OEMs, tower makers, PEB builders and the hardware trade. NPCS has supported entrepreneurs since 1994 with project reports, feasibility studies and guidance on machinery, approvals and finance.

Market Demand for Fasteners in India
Fastener demand in India follows auto production, infrastructure, transmission and railways. Buyers range from tier suppliers to local hardware distributors. Output is concentrated in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Rajkot, Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru and Faridabad, where wire-rod supply and skilled labour are close at hand. Export potential is medium to high, mainly to the US and Europe.
- Auto OEMs and tier suppliers
- Construction and PEB contractors
- Transmission tower makers
- Distributors and the hardware trade
Fastener Products You Can Make
Most new plants start with hex bolts and nuts or self-tapping screws, which have wide trade demand. High-strength structural bolts and automotive fasteners need tighter control and approvals, so they usually come later.
- Hex bolts and nuts (property classes 4.6–12.9)
- High-strength structural bolts
- Self-tapping and machine screws
- Anchor fasteners
- Washers
- Rivets
- Stainless and special automotive fasteners
Fastener Manufacturing Process Explained
The fastener manufacturing process starts with wire rod that is annealed, cleaned and phosphated, then drawn to size. Cold formers shape the head and body, and thread rolling or tapping cuts the thread. Higher grades go through hardening and tempering, often in mesh-belt furnaces. Zinc flake coating is replacing electroplating in many plants.
Quality is checked at every stage. Typical tests include tensile, proof load, hardness, thread gauging, coating thickness and salt spray, against IS 1367 series or ISO 898. Automotive buyers also ask for PPAP.
- Wire-rod annealing
- Pickling and phosphating
- Wire drawing
- Cold heading
- Trimming
- Thread rolling/tapping
- Hardening and tempering (high grades)
- Surface coating (zinc plating, hot-dip galvanising, zinc flake)
- Inspection and packing
Raw Materials and Machinery for Fasteners
Wire rods in carbon, alloy, boron steel or stainless grades are your main input, bought from integrated and special-steel mills. Chemicals for phosphating and coating come next. Cold formers and heat-treatment furnaces drive quality the most. Plating or galvanising can be outsourced if you want to limit pollution-related investment.
- Annealing furnace
- Pickling and phosphating tanks
- Wire drawing
- Cold formers
- Thread rolling and tapping machines
- Mesh-belt furnace
- Plating or galvanising (or outsourced)
- Sorting machines
Fastener Manufacturing Licence and Approvals
Begin with business and factory registration, then obtain consent to establish from the State Pollution Control Board before construction. Cold forging and heat treatment without cyaniding are Green, but pickling, phosphating, plating or galvanising fall in the Red category. Hazardous waste authorisation is needed for pickling and plating. Obtain consent to operate before production, and plan IATF 16949 if you want automotive supply.
| Pollution category | Cold forging without heat treatment: Green (CPCB Jan-2025 Annexure-I S.No. 102.4); heat treatment furnace without cyaniding: Green (101.3); pickling, phosphating, plating or galvanising: Red (101.1); wire drawing with pickling: Red (105.1) |
|---|---|
| HSN code | 7318 (screws, bolts, nuts, washers of iron/steel) |
| GST | 18% |
| BIS / quality control order | Fasteners are made to IS 1367/ISO 898 property classes; automotive buyers require IATF 16949-certified suppliers |
| Other licences | Hazardous waste authorisation (pickling, plating); factory licence; IATF 16949 for automotive supply |
Choosing the Right Fastener Plant Size
Indicative capacity runs from about 1,000 to 20,000 TPA, with investment of about ₹5–60 crore excluding land. A smaller unit can focus on standard bolts and screws for the hardware trade and outsource coating. A larger plant justifies in-house heat treatment and coating, plus automotive approvals. Scale also changes land, power and manpower needs, so settle the size before you finalise machinery.
Fastener Quality Standards and Certification
Fasteners are made to IS 1367 and ISO 898 property classes, and buyers expect test records for each lot. Automotive customers require IATF 16949-certified suppliers and PPAP documents. Plan these early, because they affect your testing lab, gauges and process control. Without them, you will mostly sell to distributors and construction buyers.
Government Schemes and Project Finance for Fasteners
Fastener units may look at state incentives, and eligible auto-component suppliers can look at the PLI scheme for automobile and auto components. Banks want a clear project report with costs, working capital and cash flow. NPCS reports are used for bank loans and programmes such as PMEGP, MSME schemes, Mudra and NABARD-linked projects, subject to each lender's requirements.
What Decides Success in a Fastener Plant
Good operators buy wire rod well, control forming and heat treatment, and build coating capability. Risks need planning from the start.
- Steel price volatility
- Cheap imports
- Pollution compliance for pickling and plating
- Hazardous spent pickle liquor and sludge disposal

Fastener Manufacturing: Frequently Asked Questions
How much does fastener manufacturing setup cost in India?
An indicative range is about ₹5–60 crore, excluding land, depending on capacity and whether coating and heat treatment are in-house. Your project report works out the exact figure for your capacity, technology and location.
Which pollution category applies to a fastener plant?
It depends on the process. Cold forging without heat treatment is Green, while pickling, phosphating, plating or galvanising is Red. Outsourcing coating can reduce the compliance burden. Confirm the category with your State Pollution Control Board.
How much land and power does a fastener unit need?
A typical unit needs about 1–5 acres and a power load of roughly 500 kW to 3 MW. Pickling and plating also need moderate water and an effluent treatment plant. Exact needs depend on your capacity.
How to start fastener manufacturing as a new entrepreneur?
Choose your product range and capacity first, then settle technology, location and wire-rod sourcing. Next, apply for registrations and pollution consents, and arrange finance. A detailed project report ties these steps together before you order machinery.
Can NPCS prepare a fastener manufacturing project report?
Yes. NPCS prepares detailed project reports, bankable reports and feasibility studies for fastener projects. We cover process, machinery, approvals and financials, and tailor the report to your capacity, budget, technology and market area.
