A rectified spirit or rectified alcohol<\/strong> is highly concentrated ethanol which is purified through rectification. A rectified spirit<\/strong> is used in mixed drinks, in the production of liqueurs, for medicinal purposes, and as a household solvent. The neutral grain spirits are also rectified spirits<\/strong> that are made up of grain. Rectified spirits<\/strong> are not legal for non-medical purposes in many countries but are legal in many industrialized nations. In India, Ethanol i<\/strong>s produced by the fermentation of sugars present in the molasses using yeast. 95.5% ethanol with 4.5% water mixture is called rectified spirit which is produced from the fermented molasses<\/strong> containing 7% to 8% Ethanol in a simple distillation process.<\/p>\n

The rectified spirit is dehydrated<\/strong> to produce absolute Ethanol that is suitable for blending with petrol and diesel. Dehydration of rectified spirit to produce absolute Ethanol is done by one of the two methods either azeotrope distillation<\/strong> or pressure swing adsorption or by pressure swing adsorption. In the azeotrope distillation<\/strong>, there is another substance held which is known as entrain like hexane<\/strong> and is taken for removal of water. In the pressure swing adsorption, the water is removed by adsorbing on the surface of molecular sieves and then cyclically removing it under different conditions. The extra neutral alcohol<\/strong> is also used as volatile carriers in flavors and fragrances, potable liquor for human consumption.<\/strong><\/p>\n
