What does Decorticating mean?

Now there are two types of decorticating. But the context we are using the word, “Decorticating” today means to remove the bark or rind or husk. In the topic’s context, decorticating means to remove the shell from the peanut. So, to state the obvious, Decorticating is a process where the peanut is separated from its shell. Now interesting, we have all done this process in our life. You must be living under a rock if you have never bought shelled peanuts and separate the peanuts inside and eat them. Now just because we can do decorticating with our bare hands doesn’t mean it is a sufficient method. We can decorticate one small bag of shelled peanuts, maybe two bags, and maximum three. But how will you decorticate 100s of kilos of shelled peanuts? This is, by the way, under the assumption, you’re decorticating for yourself and not a hotel or food chain. Most food chains run on efficiency. That’s the reason people pay them. And it would be against the whole efficiency mantra, if we start decorticating shelled peanuts by our hands. We need a more efficient way to decorticate shelled peanuts, to keep the supply chain equal to demand of the food industry. And that’s when the Groundnut Decorticator or Peanut Decorticator comes in the picture.

Groundnut or Peanut Decorticator.

Before anyone gets confused, let’s start with pointing it out, Groundnut is just another name for Peanut. While Peanut is more of a western term, it is called Groundnut in India. A Groundnut Decorticator is a machine that separates the peanut kernel from its shell. Once it separates the husk i.e shell from the kernel, it throws away the husks through a built in air blower. The remaining kernels are separated into two categories,

ⅰ. Whole Peanut Kernels

ⅱ. Split Peanut Kernels.

The Groundnut Decorticator has three outlets.

  1. In the first outlet, you get the  pure whole peanuts
  2. In the second one, you can find the unshelled peanuts
  3. In the last outlet, it release the split peanuts

A 100 kg of shelled peanut can be turned into 72 kg of peanut kernel and the remaining 28 kg is the shell. Groundnut Decorticator is also called Shell remover and Skin Separator. But Decorticator is the most used term. The shells that are thrown out from the air blower during this process are then used to fuel the boiler. Now this stops it from going into the already full landfill and solves the fuel issue for the boiler.

And similar manufacturers. Here’s a pro tip, make an agreement with your local manufacturer instead of these big names. Collaboration with local manufacturers would mean cheap products and long term relations. But the point is the reason I named all these groundnut decorticator manufacturers is that when you need to build a plant, you need to get your hands on decorticators. Now, of course you could buy decorticators from these suppliers. But the smart approach would be to sign a long term agreement with guarantee of new supply and maintenance. Now it will cost more than just buying the Groundnut Decorticator but it would be a much more secure way to tackle the situation. And that is why I suggest collaborating with local manufacturers. It is a cheaper and more secure business deal. Mainly because the need to collaborate is from both sides.

A long term business relation means the manufacturer has a reliable reason and monetary help to keep his manufacturing unit open. For the plant owner, it means a cheap and maintenance friendly deal. Not only does this profit both the parties, monetarily. But if the plant owner’s profit surpasses and the need for more plants rises it will also mean the need for more manufacturing units. In short, this is a collaborative business. The Project report presented by Entrepreneur India for new businesses includes a broad commercial center investigation. The report covers region wise patterns trending in the sector, overseas trade, and the regulatory framework with complete SWOT analysis of the business.
