Arunachal Pradesh, the largest hilly state of the North Eastern area of India has a geographical area of 83, 743 square kilometres. ranging between 26o28’ to 29o28’ North latitude and 91o35’ to 97o27’ East latitude is bestowed with exclusive physiographic conditions and an abundance of plant genetic variation. It has large climatic variations including sub-tropical to temperate and alpine. Thus, state possesses the inherent potential to promote the cultivation of temperate fruit largely due to the availability of large areas with a temperate climate. The approximated area coming under the temperate climatic conditions is 27, 91, 433 hectares and the estimated area available for temperate fruit cultivation is 6, 97, 858 hectares, i.e. almost one-third of the geographical area of the state comes under temperate climate. The region has an exclusive advantage of cultivating temperate fruits and other horticultural crops.

Horticulture has been considered as one of the most significant sectors of sustainability.
