Hard Board from Bagasse

Soft and hard board, which are the basic among the paper boards, is used for wide range of purposes like folding boxes, backboard, for flat files, for making registers etc. These boards can be produced from any waste material like rice straw, waste paper, jute waste, coir dust etc. The board can also be manufactured from bagasse which is available from the sugar industries. There is high demand for straw board, cardboard, mill board and solid fibre boards in the country. Hard fibre board prepared from bagasse are light in weight and is not easily breakable. KRAFT PAPER FROM BAGASSE

Kraft paper is paper produced by the Kraft process from wood pulp or waste or agriculture residue. It is strong and relatively coarse. Kraft paper is usually a brown colour but can be bleached to produce white paper. It is used for paper grocery bags, multiwall sacks, envelopes and other packaging It is widely used for packaging applications e.g. for wrapping purposes, for bags and envelopes, for sacks and as a liner in corrugated. It is used as basis strata for the manufacturing of gummed papers, laminated papers, coated papers etc. The world consumption of paper and paper board is estimated at over 27.5 mn tonnes in a year. It is constituted broadly 30% of cultural papers, 14% of news print and balance of kraft and packaging paper. The demand for paper and paper boards has been growing at 5 to 6% over the last five years. The industry has progressed in the sense that dependence on wood-based raw material has come down to approximately 40%. Bagasse and waste paper now constitute more than 60% of the raw material base. HARD BOARD FROM BAGASSE

Soft and hard boards, which are the most basic among paper boards, are used for a wide range of purposes including folding boxes, back board for flat files, for making registers etc. As the board is made from bagasse and treated with small amounts of lime milk, soda ash etc. there is fairly high demand for straw board, card board, mill board and solid fibre board etc. These items will continue to be in sufficiently high demand. The applications of the various types of boards are many and the major proportion of the demand for boards probably emerges out of the requirements of the packaging industry. Bagasse is one of the basic waste materials of sugar industry. Approximately, 15% of the available bagasse can be made available by the sugar mills for other uses.
